How does a Power Rangers movie sound?

You'd have to shrink the Zords, so the battles wouldn't kill thousands of civilians. That's the first thing that came to my head. You can write that off in a campy kid's show, but it a blockbuster that crap has to be acknowledged.

The odd thing is whilst Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was a box office hit, the second film (Turbo) released only two years later flopped. What can account for this (other than the fact that it was awful)?

The first movie was released at the height of its popularity, it died down rather quickly after that.

You make it better

Make it something it's not, you mean? There's plenty of mature superhero stuff out there, no reason to not just let goofy shit be goofy.

Power Rangers' Japanese equivalent's sister show, Masked Rider, got a mature film reboot. Outside of some nice suit designs and fight choreography (things already possible within the shows themselves), it didn't turn out too well.

There should be one coming for the 20th Anniversary, at least.

I don't expect it to be big-budget though.

Also, Power Rangers (and it's source material) is all about theatrics and showy explosions, being dark and gritty just doesn't seem like a good idea considering what it is. Even Kamen Rider The First didn't turn out too well, as Box of Bunnies pointed out.

You make it better

Well, it is better than it was back in the MMPR days, but that's not saying much.

Needs more Zack dance.

I remember in the show they had him design his own martial art dubbed "Hip Hopkido"

How do you reboot a series that's still going on?

Yeah the original Power Rangers are long gone but the series and continuity is still going on.

A Power Rangers reboot would have been best when RPM ended, and Bandai started selling those MMPR-redux toys. There was no show airing, and Bandai was banking on MMPR nostalgia.

But now that the series was already rebooted (and made popular again), Saban may be less inclined to go the big-budget movie route when it's cheaper to just continue on with what he has.

Outside of maybe going animated, a Power Rangers reboot would never make sense. The whole point, from a business perspective, is being able to produce the show cheaply using Japanese footage and suits/props. Going back to older suits would completely kill that.

They can always adapt 199 Heroes, and replace Goseiger with MMPR, and you got an in-continuity MMPR movie while still being able to use Gokaiger. Of course, it will make use of the footage Toei filmed that does not include the pre-Zyu teams, so no one can complain.

Why does everything have to be gritty, dark, and realistic? I want a Power rangers movie and I want it to be just as cheesy as it was when I was a little kid.

I'm assuming it was Japanese, kinda par for the course.

Well, yes.

All of these shows are Japanese, they just edit out the scenes with Japanese actors in them and put in ones with English-speaking actors. They keep the fight scenes.

If you want to watch them, you can. Fans sub the shows into dozens of languages, it's how people outside Japan watch them.

Yea, I'm aware of super sentai and the like. I just don't think Japanese movies of such things are usually any good anyways(nobody is checking for cashern or that battleship yamato thing). I think a modern, mature, less goofy version might actually be good.

They made the the 1995 movie armour suits themselves and added some functionality to them. As far as I'm aware they were originals for the movie

Yep, the MMPR movie did not use any footage from Super Sentai.

Saban is using American suits again with Samurai:

But they still use the original suits for most of the show:

if you guys see even 1 episode of Dino Thunder you wouldnt want a reboot.

it is TOO awesome. Internet cyber cafe juice bar as the center of their headquarters is good enough for me.

Just want to pop in this thread to say that original Green Power ranger is still the best ranger, with original white following him and lightspeed rescue red in third.

Dino Thunder was very good remake of MMPR.

it's the same guy.

Hmm I want to watch the first power rangers movie now.

How well does it hold up?

It will make you realize why parents didn't want kids to watch MMPR. Not because that it was violent, but because it was incredibly stupid.

Great score, though.

Wouldn't more "mature" Power Rangers be Kamen Rider? I'm surprised Hollywood hasn't tried that considering all of the other shows/movies they horribly adapt.

From what I vaguely remember watching it as a kid, the second movie was basically a long TV episode. Probably didn't help it.

Same problem I have with Star Trek: Insurrection, really. You could edit down Insurrection to 60 minutes and it wouldn't be out of place as a normal TNG episode.

No, both Kamen Rider and Super Sentai are for the same audience, kids and the mothers who watch it with them.

Besides, Kamen Rider is more like Iron Man, it doesn't have the team dynamic that SS makes as part of the show.

Same guy but different attitudes.

True, but that's because the Green Ranger and the White Ranger were different people in the source material.

The original Green Ranger was the brother of the Red Ranger, and the original White Ranger was a perverted kid.

I'm not really into tokusatsu shows, but a friend of mine told me that more recent Kamen Rider series had a lot of popularity with the demographics who watch Smallville or Supernatural in the US.

doesnt exist

power rangers died after the white ranger series damnit

I bet you think Pokemon also ended after Red and Blue.

I'm kinda surprised this hasn't happened already especially since superhero/comic book movies exploded in popularity over the last decade.

You have to imagine that making a Power Rangers movie would cost peanuts. Even at the high-end, probably a 20-30 million dollar budget max. Not much of a financial risk.

He emphasized that there were a lot of teenaged fans too, though. I don't know why exactly, but his analogy to those WB shows just caused Kamen Rider to make perfect sense to me all of a sudden.

Yep.

It's why all of those shows always cast supermodels or questionably young actors, it's to enhance eye appeal, just like soap operas.

However, unlike soap operas, these shows have awesome explosions and fight scenes.

Moms manage to keep the Den-o Franchise going waaaaayyyyyyy longer then it should.

I'd say not too bad given the original source material, and it definitely does help that it has higher Hollywood production values. The CG effects are pretty subpar though, but I honestly can't recall the state of CG at the time at the films budget level. I can still watch it even as someone that was already too old to really be into the show even at the time. It is a bit annoying they invented a new one-shot villain for it though, but I suppose that was not to interfere with the continuity of the actual Japanese storylines. I also think the score is one of the best features of the film as well.

By more "mature" I just meant that it would be easier to go in the standard "gritty" direction than PR as it already leans more that way. Plus there is not really a lot of flashiness/colors as PR. If it needed to be team based just tweak the formula from the most recent US version for example. They already have "team-ups" in Kamen Rider, so one that becomes a lasting partnership wouldn't be too out there.

I want an Abrams Power Rangers so so so bad. Those original suits are so fucking cool and would look amazing in glorious hd with some bad ass space battles and shit.
