How does Microsoft match (or best) Sony with Durango/720?

Killzone doesn't need to be countered, it's a run of the mill franchise in terms of relevance.

It's like saying Warner Brothers needs to release Batman in the same month as Daredevil. Battlefield and Call of Duty are gonna be the big heavy hitters.

Their both multiplatform and if Killzone is irrelevant I guess most of MS and Sony's 1st party outputs are irrelevant.

Killzone and Infamous rehashes? I want something completely new.

Have we not been through this like a million times. Companies will create sequels to big franchises because they sell. All three do this. Sony at least puts of new IPs along with the sequels unlike MS.

For instance; Knack, The Witness and Drive Club.

Three new IP's that you seem to have conveniently forgotten.

The two smartest things they could do at this point are to try and exploit the cost gap between the two consoles as much as possible (get to market at $299 or $350 if possible) and, if the rumors about MS charging to authorize the play of used or rented games are true, they need to reverse course and make them untrue prior to launch.

I love this idea that Microsoft were sitting there with a clipboard making notes how they will one up every little part of the PS4 conference.

This stuff has been determined over several years. These companies already have a grand master plan of how they're going to approach next gen. One conference from a competitor doesn't mean you suddenly scramble around like a headless chicken.

Whatever they've chosen now is done. Whether they made the right choice or not only time will tell.

You say this in jest, but you'd be foolish to think that MS aren't making some adjustments after Sony has shown it's cards.
It doesn't have to be anything too major, but adjustments will be made.

Microsoft preparing like batman thinking of 20 ways sony can beat them & 20 ways they won't let that happen lol

12 GB or 16 GB of RAM

All fasciciousness aside, they can undercut Sony with games and/or Price. Frankly, I think they will go for the price angle going for $350-400 while Sony will likely be somewhere between $400 and $500.

The point is that KZ and Infamous are not necessarily threatening games -- they have sold modestly and attained somewhat middling scores in the past. Sure it makes sense to release sequels as they are recognizable to the hardcore base, but it's not as worrying as you might think.

Also, Witness is multi and I guarantee you MS will have as many new IPs at their conference. They have supported the unique IP/indie community tremendously with arcade and I don't expect that to change.

Unercutting them pricewise won't help at all. There is a certain PlayStation fanbase that will buy a PlayStation regardless of price or games. The PS3 experienced that same trend.
Microsoft need to best Sony hardware wise to make the console more compelling and introduce their serviced worldwide. Xbox live EU is a joke compared to US Xbox Live. I'm not optimistic about Microsoft's answer to PS4..

I agree with that.

While gamers are enthusiastic about PS4's hardware, it seems to be crazy expensive once again -- and I don't think it's a smart decision. If the two SKU rumors are true, I'd expect 450$ and 550$ at this point, so if Microsoft is able to sell Durango for 350$ they've got a huge advantage on their side imo. Third parties will downgrade their games so that they can be played on Duragno just as well anyway and I doubt that the average joe would even care about the graphical difference.

They definitely have to be working on some new IPs, but this part is seriously off base.

That fanbase did nothing to stand in 360's way this gen. Does the PS3 perform better in some areas? Sure. Did MS succeed 100% in gaining the necessary mindshare to become a viable platform after their first gen? You bet.

Those two conflict with each other.

Xbox will always, always have a disadvantage because the PlayStation is a much more powerful brand. Sure, Microsoft came a long way this gen, but they can waste all that depending on how they cope with next gen. Sony introduced a pretty darn perfect gaming machine with social services that are actually compelling to gamers.

I totally disagree. Exhibit A: The "PlayStation" Vita

The problem I forsee MS having is Sony has super-simplified their hardware. (x86 similar CPUs, unified fast memory pool). It will be much easier for multiplatform games to look better if ps4 has better specs, like we are expecting. I do not see being lead platform mattering this coming Gen as it has in the past.

MS having 5GB of usable slower memory, a 32MB edram/cache window to shoehorn every piece of code thru, custom DME to access to simulate highspeed access. I just don't see devs liking that more. I could be wrong, I'm not a programmer and implementation is 9/10ths of everything.

I respectfully disagree, spec wars only matter to the hardcore. If Microsoft manages to have a console that has 80-90% of the PS4's power while having a comparable selection while being $50-100 cheaper will give it a huge advantage in the mass market. With a large base Microsoft's new hardware will be the baseline for the big budget third party games.

Microsoft has many cards it can play, and price is a huge advantage that can sway momentum to its favor.

In terms of exclusives, Sony has nothing that needs to be countered outside of Gran Turismo, and they didn't show that. It's one of many reasons the Vita is dead. They don't possess a library of must-haves. They succeeded with the PS1/PSP/PS2 because theirs was the platform of choice for third parties.

But hasn't it been said that MS and Sony consoles are pretty close to each other hardware wise? Using the same CPU, different GPU and Memory. I have a hard time seeing developers that are porting their PS4 games to make it run as good on a hardware that has much slower ram. And that is with Ms super fast SRAM cache they have

Ah okay, fair play, I haven't paid much attention to the indie scene recently. I guess my point was that there was no shortage of new IPs from smaller devs at least towards the beginning of the 360s life. We'll see if that continues.

Microsoft already has the advantage because Sony did nothing to fix the main problem with their controller: the analog stick placement. That controller layout is completely outdated for things like FPSs and action games. I hate it to death.

Also, pretty much all the third party stuff Sony showed will also be on 720. Killzone looked pretty but its gameplay looked old as dirt.

The controller is a huge deal for me.

This is not true. And it's hard to believe this day people actually think this.

I believe it is, especially when it comes to first party titles. GOW,Uncharted, LOU and Infamous are all unmatched graphic wise. Gears holds up a bit and Halo 4 is considered the only graphic powerhouse on the 360.

I am not sure. I wonder if the pendulum will swing back Sony's direction this round. It seems MS pissed off some developers this generation and it seems Sony has learned developers don't want a proprietary chipset to develop for (Cell vs x86).

I hope MS shows off something awesome though. 360 was my preferred platform this gen, but I am totally open to PS4 being my preferred platform next gen.

Oh and Sony's OS better support chat outside a game that still works when you boot a game. I really hated a lot about Sony's OS/lack of features when compared to XBL.

Admittedly I haven't seen it. All I know from it is the ludicrous financial hoops indie devs had to jump through to get their games on arcade. Terrible practice, but is the expectation that indie games will ditch the platform next gen? Honest question.

Sony will take Japan and Europe again. MS will take America again, but Sony has an opportunity to try and win back some marketshare.

For Microsoft, all they can hope to do is play defense in the core market and maintain their share. Any growth will come from subsidy and the casual market.

I think the grass is way greener on iOS. I don't know that we'll see another wave of stuff that's truly innovative again, and MS really soured people like Team Meat on their platform.

Dude, there is no argueing. PlayStation is a much bigger brand in the EU. UK isn't even a part of the EU.

Okay.

Does anyone have a list or something of regions sorted by which ones generate the largest userbases for console gaming? I'd imagine UK and US are above EU, but I'm probably wrong.

Yes cause we all have seen how well some multiplatforms perform on the PS3 .........

Those developers sure will make sure it runs evenly on everything!

The 8GB of GDDR5 puts a bit of pressure on Microsoft. I hope they can match it. Games and feature wise I think Microsoft will be fine.

Not really seeing as it hasn't been shown yet and we've yet to see anything running on it. Nor confirmed specs. Just sayin....

If the Durango leaks are approximately correct the PS4 hardware looks to be more focused on being a great "game console" rather than a spastic orgy of "multi-media content" that happens to play video games as well. I expect the Durango controller will be innovative thanks to the Perceptive Pixel company they bought.

I agree with this. Especially around Christmas, if one console is $100 cheaper than the other, the cheaper one will always win.

MS can get more marketshare in EU, they just have to try. They were very lazy with continental Europe this gen.

I've been reading up on PS4 specs and rumoured Durango specs, and it would be sorcery for Durango to match PS4 specs, let alone best it. It doesn't look good for MS.

You didn't say "the EU", you said "much more powerful" in general. At the moment, I would say that the brands are about even (and this is evidenced by sales). In some territories Xbox is bigger and in some Playstation is bigger. At the moment, one of the "Xbox is bigger" territories happens to be the US, where there is no comparison whatsoever.

I don't think either company is at a brand disadvantage going into the next generation. Whichever console presents more games that people want to play (and in an environment that they want to play them in) will pull ahead.
