How does PS4 video capture work, it seems to be delayed?

The odd thing is....I've recorded at least 3gb worth of clips of BF4 videos (all silent) but one is 66mb and another is about 70-ish. Those recorded 'perfectly' in that I did not need 15 mins even with the other clips but just a few moments worth. I simply pressed and held Share, the Menu pops up, instead of signing in to Twitter or Facebook, I just leave the Menu and go back to the game. It could be that I wasn't on 15 mins but I'm not sure as I don't remember how long I was in-game before I pressed share.

Edit: Checking out the Kotaku Share Button Video: (http://kotaku.com/how-to-record-livestream-and-share-screenshots-on-ps4-1464822314). this will probably help me understand.

I seem to have had the same problem as the OP. I seen a few trophies ding in the first chapter of BF4 and hit the share button to upload to Facebook. granted I didn't go and edit the footage, I just assumed the last 15min would be uploaded.

the video is from the start of the game forward, not the specific section I wanted to record.

The default option for pressing and holding share is to take a screenshot, so maybe it took a screenshot of the menu and thought you wanted to go back into the game?

ok here is some quick tips.

Video is ALWAYS recording the last 15 min. If it not 15 min there is 3 reasons.
- 15min ran up and the new 15 min is loading
- game blocked certain video like a cutscene for example
- You manually started recording.

Now shortcuts.. Hold Share for a couple of secs and it takes a screenshot. If you want to manually record double tap the Share button. Lets say i'm playing a knack level and want to record a specific scene I just just double tap and it starts recording at that second.

With Twitch for 2k14 they disabled music purposely. I'm not sure if that's that same for Share but it wouldn't surprise me.

wow that kind of sucks. how am I supposed to know when I'm in the correct 15 minutes...

I went into share from nba 2k once and it was some random recording unrelated to my current game.

lol @ all the people saying 'should be next 15 minutes'

you can't always anticipate something awesome or recording-worthy happening in a game. I remember playing GTA V and having a lot of crazy shit go down in my game that I could have recorded with my equipment but didn't anticipate any of it actually taking place and missed my opportunity to.

No you are wrong cause it's happen to me four separate times where I hit share and it's a random 15 minutes from earlier in my play through.

if this is true then what's even the point

So many conflicting statements in this thread haha. Hurting my brain.

I thought it was basically this:
- It's always recording the last 15 minutes. If something awesome happens, you can hit Share and upload the clip, editing it if you want.
- You can manually choose to start recording the next 15 minutes by double pressing Share. This is if you know something awesome is about to happen, or you want to show something off like a walkthrough. You then press Share to upload what you recorded when you are done, and doing so begins the process of continuously recording the last 15 minutes like it normally does.
- If it doesn't record, it's because the developers have stopped it from doing so, such as cutscenes and other spoilery moments.

Correct?

.

So what does that mean? If it really was saving the last 15 minutes it would be constantly deleting and updating the saved video so you only have the last 15 minutes, it doesn't do that does it. After 15 minutes it creates a save and then it just stops for a while and doesn't record anything.

It was supposed to work like that but it does not. And it has nothing to do with spoiler blocking.

geeze guys, when the OP says "previous 15 minutes" he means t-30 to t-15 which is previous to what he calls the "last 15 minutes" t-15 to t-0

It's supposed to be the latter, as the OP expected, and it's not working for him

Could be lol...this'll be fun learning the ropes of this beautiful console. Thanks for the input.

Xbox One you can say "Record That" or "Record This". In your case it would have been record that.

No clue why the PS4 doesn't have that feature.

Wait, so it's in 15 minute chunks, not constantly the last 15 minutes? So if your last 15 minute chunk just ended, and you are 5 minutes into your new 15 minute chunk, if you did something 7 minutes ago, it won't be there?

Ok, so I just went into BF4 to make sure everything was working fine. I wanted to record to see if there was something fucking up.

1. Started BF4 and went into a match of rush.
2. Played the entire match, then at scoreboard, pressed share, then upload gameplay. Backed out of that.
3. Continued onto next match.
4. At end of second match, pressed share again, then upload gameplay, and backed out.
5. Continued onto next match, connection error, booted out lol.

And?

I have 2 clips. One of the first match (11minutes, 50 seconds) and the second clip of the second match starts exactly at the end of the first one (with the scoreboard and the runtime is 8 minutes, 50 seconds).

Both clips work.

So on my end, it works perfectly. So its either user error, or his PS4 bugged.

Right it worked cause the second you start the game it starts to record so the first 15 minutes of play is for sure going to be there, So that was your first clip.

You hit the share button meaning it will automatically start a new 15 minute clip, so that was your second video.

If you had started the game and never hit share until say an hour in your PS4 would have a random 15 minute clip.

Ok i just tested it out and your right. It does not record automatically. You have to manually record THEN it starts recording the past 15 min. Everytime time you press Share button it creates a small video.

Double tap record - play game, play game for up the 15 min and it stops. Ever you press the share button before the 15 min it creates a video and starts over.

I think it might be a bug because they always described it as always recording. Unless it's hidden somewhere in the settings.

So you are saying at the end of fifteen it starts a brand new fifteen and deletes the earlier footage. Its not supposed to do that.
It sounds bugged you may want to let Sony know.

It auto records for the first 15 minutes. Then it seems to take a break or wait for you to hit share. Eventually it randomly starts another 15 minute block.

Ok, so I'll test it again. I'll play for half an hour, then press share. You are saying that I won't have the previous 15 minutes?

I am saying it keeps the old fifteen and does not start a new fifteen till who knows when, that I cant figure out.

Many times its a clip from 30 minutes ago, not 15 minutes ago.

so the console is constantly recording the last 15 minute to the hdd , its continuous recording and deleting process !
i hope this don't destroy the hdd life

Yeah he is saying you would have 0-15 and not 15-30 i think

Seems easy enough to test. Its 7:30pm right now and I am sitting at the BF4 title screen. Havent touched share. I'll wait for 20 minutes. I'll then share, and it should give me a 15 minute video if it works properly, correct?

Well it will give you a 15 minute video, but probably the first 15 minutes. If its just the same screen the whole way how can you tell what 15 minutes it recorded?

Yes. BUT! Make sure to only move around the menu AFTER 5 minutes have passed.

It did this with Knack but not Resogun. I did an hour session of Knack and stopped at 12min. Just started Resogun and isn't recording anything until i hit record.

I have a 1TB SSHD not sure if that's causing any problems. Is there any Share settings at all?

I would say it would be easier to play resogun for 15 mins with one ship then switch to a new one for another 15 mins without touching the share button. If he is right you should only have footage of the first ship other wise you will have footage of the second ship.

So its bugged for you as well it is supposed to be a rolling 15mins. After 40 minutes it should have recorded from min 25-40. It sounds like it is stopping for some reason. OP do you have a stock HDD or did you replace yours as well?

Exactly, that is what it seems to be doing.
This is it. It fucking sucks. To everyone else, no I'm not confused. I know how it is claimed to work, but it does not work that way.

If I click share, I am not guaranteed that the produced video has my awesome moment in it. It does NOT continuously record the most recent 15 minutes. It does some weird stop and start chunk thing. It might work sometimes, but every time I've tried it, it is way too far behind.

Well it will give you a 15 minute video, but probably the first 15 minutes. If its just the same screen the whole way how can you tell what 15 minutes it recorded?

I'll start hopping around in the menus at 7:50. I'll make sure the end part is clearly visible.

Probably been said, but why doesn't the button just start and stop the capturing when you press it? With a 15 minute limit.
Or give you that option?

Yeah, just make sure you're doing something where you'll recognize what portion was saved.

The thing is, I wait until (and this is obvious) my 'moment' is over and then right after it happens (a few nice sniper shots, etc) I press Share....the length of these vids vary but in every clip my intended moment is recorded albeit with extra minutes, etc.

It does now, but that is pointless when you don't know when something awesome/funny/horrible will happen.

no you are wrong!
maybe...

It actually records multiple recordings from what I have seen. It bunches it into 15 minutes, like I was playing battlefield 4 last night and it had a 15 minute long recording and then another one that was like 8 minutes, it also had another recording from......killzone I think. It wasn't me hitting record either, it was the 15 minutes. So it had multiple recordings of the game I was currently playing.

Seems like you didn't know how this feature worked, it's completely working and present.

how hard is it to press a button to upload something? we're saying it's not recording the proper last 15min.

I had two trophies pop up around 30-45 minutes into the first Chapter of BF4, I pressed the share button, uploaded to Facebook and continued to play. I then came back to the PC to check it out and found this.
