How does PS4 video capture work, it seems to be delayed?

no you are wrong!
maybe...

It actually records multiple recordings from what I have seen. It bunches it into 15 minutes, like I was playing battlefield 4 last night and it had a 15 minute long recording and then another one that was like 8 minutes, it also had another recording from......killzone I think. It wasn't me hitting record either, it was the 15 minutes. So it had multiple recordings of the game I was currently playing.

Right but not always the last 15 minutes. And if the machine was actually endlessly recording the previous 15 minutes wouldn't every video be 15 minutes long?

It's confusing as hell.

My guess is that it works in 15 minute chunks. The scene I wanted was probably missing because I passed the 15 minute mark. So I guess that means I have to wait another 15 minutes to hit the share button and have it in that chunk? Total nonsense if that's the case. Better bust out your stopwatch.

It wouldn't show the OS. The recording should start when you start a game and continuously record from there.

No that would be ridiculous. Probably just buggy right now.

how hard is it to press a button to upload something? we're saying it's not recording the proper last 15min.

I had two trophies pop up around 30-45 minutes into the first Chapter of BF4, I pressed the share button, uploaded to Facebook and continued to play. I then came back to the PC to check it out and found this.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=1386204614957117&l=4464452717646471844

obviously the start part of the chapter

Right some people dont seem to get what is going on. It works, I have uploaded many videos. But I have learned to manipulate it to make sure its recording what I want. Still that random moment 2 hours into a game that you really want to show off may not be recorded.

It does now, but that is pointless when you don't know when something awesome/funny/horrible will happen.
Right I get that. The main reason for the share function is to capture crazy moments without having to be constantly recording. But what about giving you an option to start a new recording session (at your current point for the next 15 minutes - or when you decide to press stop) or capture the past 15 minutes.
Is that redundant? I haven't thought this through fully.

The whole 'random capture moment' theory is displeasing because its not precise at all, which most of us would obviously prefer. I mean my personal emotions aside, I hope that isn't true and there is at least some level of precision in the recording/capturing process. ultimately this is software-side functionality so it could potentially be improved in the future.

As some have said here, you can already do that. I believe by tapping the share button twice. Please correct me if I am wrong people.

Oh ok. I should probably test the feature out myself before I start posting. I was just getting the impression that it didn't do that already.

I think this is it, problem is in the middle of play you have no clue when a 15 minute period is up so odds are you hit share and only the previous 15 minute chunk is there and because you hit share it ignores the 15 minutes it was currently recording and starts the new one. Meaning you have a random gap of video missing.

That is what I think is happening.

If you engage it manually, you can be sure of some precision. The problem is, if I explicitly start recording (double tap share) and just leave it, it automatically stops after 15 minutes and will not start a new chunk when it stops. I'd literally have to time it with a stopwatch to make sure I got the whole match recorded (or say a random awesome moment at minute 17).

Here is how it should work:

Sharing a video clip

Saving a video clip

Video of the most recent 15 minutes of gameplay is continuously and automatically recorded. When you press the SHARE button, that video is saved as a video clip.

For some games, there might be scenes in which video cannot be recorded. The maximum 15 minutes of gameplay that are saved as a video clip do not include scenes in which video cannot be recorded.

  • You can set whether notification icons will be displayed when scenes cannot be recorded, whether you want to include microphone audio when recording a video clip, and other options.
  • Press the SHARE button, then press the OPTIONS button while the menu for the Share feature is displayed, and then select [Share Settings] > [Video Clip Settings].
  • For voice input, use a headset or the microphones on a PlayStation®Camera.
  • To check saved video clips, select [Profile] from the function screen, and then select (Captures).

When you know the scene you want to save

Press the SHARE button twice at the start of the scene you want to save, and then press the SHARE button again at the end of the scene. A video clip can be saved with a maximum of the past 15 minutes of gameplay video. The 15 minutes are measured backward from the moment when you press the SHARE button to end the scene.

Straight from Sony Playstation 4 manual

Ok so you guys who are having problems which of you all have changed out your HDD i wonder if that is messing up the caching because it should be doing the last 15 mins at all times.

Mine is the stock hard drive.

Crap well that would be too easy I was guessing maybe the PS4 was not handling higher speed hdds well.

Should probably shoot yosp a tweet about it i wonder if it is an os bug for everyone.

Ok, so I just checked again.

At 7:50pm, I pressed share after playing with the menus in the last few minutes.

It outputted only 1 video and it was 3 minutes and 54 seconds.

So yes, the previous 11 minutes are gone and did NOT record.

The 4 minute video was the 4 minutes before I hit share.

I just wish that when I press Share it would simply take a screenshot--the same as if I press F12 in STEAM. On the PS4, if I press Share it seems to take a screenshot + couple/save it with the video capture. I wish there was a way to turn off the video capture cause I really don't care about that right now. I just want a screenshot.

That fucking sucks. Hopefully Sony fixes that. Wonder if everyone is experiencing this or just certain users.
My buddy "claims" his works but I don't know if he played past the first 15 minutes. Not everyone may be experiencing it, but it has to be software.

Hold in the share button.

Exactly. I am playing warfarme right now, and it only recorded the first 11 minutes of it. Which is weird cause its not 15 minutes... I did hit the PS button to check on a message, seems that stopped that recording. It failed to start a new one as I had been back in the game for 5 minutes and none of it is recorded.

At the share menu press the options button. Then under Share Button Control Type pick Easy Screenshots. With that option, short press takes a screenshot, long press displays the menu, double press sets start point for video clip. Makes much more sense that way.

edit - there's also an option for "Display icons for blocked scenes" which "shows icons to indicate the beginning and end of scenes for which gameplay video recording is blocked."

plug in your mic and say "Playstation" then "ScreenShot" ;)

..or just hold the Share button.

The share button should work like this: your playing the game, something cool happens and you want to share that, you press share button just after that cool thing happened and you upload it. That's how it is working right?

There must be somewhere better to report bugs than tweeting yosp... I tweeted him anyways for verification. First time I've ever used Twitter... I feel dirty. Hopefully I did it right.

I think there's enough people experiencing the problem for it to be considered either a bug or a poor explanation of how it works.

I feel like it might be a bug.

I just watched this video where a guy explains the share functioning really good.

Can you check your archive to see if the 11 minute section is in there?

Yeah the problem isn't so much when you manually initiate it, but when you don't. If you manually start it, it will record 15 minutes from the start point no problem. I still don't really like this though because it stops after 15 minutes without telling you, so you have to time it yourself if you want to start another 15 minute chunk without missing any gameplay really.
Is the system supposed to record while your in the xmb or whatever there calling it?
No, it explicitly tells you that you can't if you try it. There has to be a game running and it be the focus.

It works like that if you so happen to hit share when its actually recording which for sure is the first 15 minutes of play and some random intervals after that.

Ok so i just tested this with Knack and it IS recording like it's supposed too. Did NOT do this other times. I recorded 15, checked it and worked. Then i played 30 min and the first 15 min did NOT share and the last 15 min did. This is how it's supposed to work. It must be a little buggy.

i THINK the bug is after a certain period of time it just stops recording. It would record the first 15 min and if you don't press Share after awhile it just stops recording. That's my guess at least.

Yeah after 15 minutes if you dont press share it seems to record nothing or randomly start up again.

I was playing Killzone, got into an elevator and a dead guy rag dolled up into the air in a most amusing fashion. I hit the share button and reviewed the footage, however, the end of the clip was like 5 minutes before the scene with the elevator and the dead guy flipping up into the air.

Can someone explain this? What am I supposed to do in this situation?

I am saying it keeps the old fifteen and does not start a new fifteen till who knows when, that I cant figure out.

Many times its a clip from 30 minutes ago, not 15 minutes ago.

Well it will give you a 15 minute video, but probably the first 15 minutes. If its just the same screen the whole way how can you tell what 15 minutes it recorded?

I just did this. I was over an hour into the Killzone campaign before I hit the button for the first time, and it gave me 15 minutes of gameplay that ended right when I hit the share button. It's worked perfectly for me across three different games.

Edit: If it's a bug that's only affecting a few, hopefully they can get it patched.

This has to be fixed. it is fucking annoying. It did not register my last killzone match which I went 30-2. Wanted to save it but nope. It got some other previous match.

Fuck.

Does this thread look like a few?

Oh man, this thread is giving me a headache. Yes, it is SUPPOSED to always be recording, and the idea is that hitting "Share" gives you access to the 15 minutes prior to your CURRENT point, to edit and share.

However, I can confirm that I just tried this in Killzone and it was missing a large chunk. It seems other people are seeing inconsistency as well - my guess is that there are some bugs causing it to not function properly.
