How important is backwards compatibility on the PS5 for you?

I don't think it has cross play with PC where I could play it right now but let's watch this space ;)
No sadly it does not have cross-play. But fuck, it's so damn good. Are you playing this game regulary?

I buy the console mostly for the next games, cross gen or not.

If it has BC it's good plus for me, specially if they are improved with better fps, resolution or loading times. But other than Street Fighter V and maybe a few of these games they will include in that 'some of the best games of the generation' collection for PS+ users I don't think I'll use it a lot for games I already completed.

Maybe more important than that for me will be getting some cross gen games for free in PS5 if I buy the PS4 version. Because I may not buy the console at launch, but I'll get games like Spiderman: Miles Morales or Cyberpunk 2077. So if I buy them for PS4 and I get the PS5 before completing them, I'd like to get the next gen version for free and carry the save.

And well, for people who didn't have a PS4 or only played a few games there, I think it's a great feature because it has a ton of awesome games, many of them exclusive. And now thanks to the PS5 boost mode like in Series X they will run with a better fps (specially in games with unlocked framerate), better resolution (in games that use dynamic resolution) and better loading times (very likely way faster than in Series X).

to play my existing ps4 games that all are bought digital sure , but older games, not that i want to play them very much rly. and rly i just want to play new games as this half year was very boring without many new games out there. couple was sure but thats not enough. who would want to play same game again but just on nest gen console ? whut ?

Very important. I want Sony to treat their past game library with more respect by giving it a full BC compatiblity with enhancements like Xbox does.
Or, at least PS Now with 1080p-4k enhancements with better texture filtering & much more stable fps & less input delay. I do have PS3 for PS1 and select PS2 games that's compatible with my Slim. I am most likely to keep my PS4 pro, depending on how it will BC would be implemented on PS5.

Next gen experience would be most important, obviously, but I always go back and visit older games - especially if they are a series - that I did not get a chance to play back then. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that way, and wishing PS5 would have some other way of re-visiting the old gems (like Dragon Quest 8, which I have no way to play but to buy a PS2 or get the 3DS ver, or go into gray area of emulate it on a PC)

I'm still hoping for the best by launch but their lack of full disclosure on BC so far is bugging me.

"Your entire PS4 library, upgraded. All new experiences only possible on next gen."

That's it. That should have been the winning pitch, carried forward all of the PS4's momentum smoothly into a new generation. I hope that's still going to be the story, but why do I not know yet when I can part with 700CAD for it already?

It's getting the most important BC in PS4 support and boosting. But it would be nice if it supported ps3 as well. I think it will eventually but it's not a deal breaker. PS2 and PS1 games I'll take a remake of those classics like MGS1 and 2. And we're headed there anyway after FFVII Remake so not a big deal there.

If I can play my existing library of PS4 titles at the same quality or higher on PS5, its a nice bonus.

But if all I cared about was playing the same old games at higher fidelity I'd not bother with a console, I'd just upgrade my PC.

Only i can say if Gravity rush 1 and 2 can be playable in PS5... I will get in first days of launch it.

If not... i will wait at least 1 or 2 years.

For me, it's extremely important. Which is why I'm so disappointed in Sony taking the stance they are. I don't like playing streaming games. I don't have a robust enough connection to do that, and not all games are downloadable. Which makes services like PsNow useless to me.

Bloodborne and God of War (Bloodborne especially) are the two games I really want to get patched. We're 6 weeks away from launch and still no words.
I don't know about patches but you will be able to play them both day 1 as part of the ps+ collection on PS5.

Honestly being able to play those games without hearing the console jet fans on my ps4pro will be next gen enough for me 😂

How important is backwards compatibility in next gen consoles? Massively important.

Since digital purchases became the norm this gen, backwards compatibility ensures the survival of the library I invested in. Old hardware has a habit of dying (my ps3 no longer reads disks), ergo new hardware should at the very least read the digital content I bought in good faith. It's bad enough the ps3 digital catalogue is pretty much fubar, ergo I won't accept any excuses if my ps4 catalogue isn't supported properly in the coming years/decades by Sony.

Even if old games were not enhanced at all backwards compatibilty is still a very nice feature Imho.
Why would i want to keep the old generation consoles connected to my TV if there was the possibility to keep playing those games on the new iteration of consoles.
Every enhancement on top of pure bc is a very welcome plus but i am very happy that both XSX and PS5 apperently support games of last gen.

On an importance scale of 0 to 10:

PS1 = 1/10
PS2 = 3/10
PS3 = 1/10
PS4 = 10/10

PS4 is absolutely necessary because they can absolutely do it due to the architecture similarity with the PS5. No excuses.

Every PS platform older than that is pretty much an easy pass. The overwhelming majority of the games on those older consoles play like older games. It's one of those things that we easily forget, i.e. controls, gameplay systems, audio quality, and overall game design have changed dramatically since the PS1. It's why remakes are way more appealing to me than going back and popping in the original game. Sure the nostalgia factor of the OG is neat for 20 or so minutes, but after that, it becomes immediately apparent how far games have come -- in a good way.

PS4 games/enhancements by itself wouldn't at all be a reason for me to go and buy a PS5, but if I'm buying a PS5 anyway then yeah I want PS4 games to be playable and I want them to be enhanced even for a fee, preferably for a fee for the games I care about if it guarantees that the enhancement is major and well done.

I only really care about enhancements for first party games and exclusives (mostly Bloodborne and God of War), for everything else I already have them enhanced on PC.

Very important for me. I still play old games from the massive library of games spanning decades. Good games are good games and can be enjoyed any time. I'd rather play them all on one device instead of having many devices hooked up. Also, I'd rather all games take advantage of the latest hardware for better res and fps.

BC is the only reason for why I pre ordered. There's tons of Pro enhanced games I have on my shelf which I haven't really touched as my console was just too loud running them. I really want to play them on a silent system.

Then there's the games I've played with 1080p output, always knowing that I'm missing out. Ghost of Tsushima is such a game or Nioh 2's 4K/60 mode that runs like ass on PS4 Pro.

To me the new consoles are pretty much a GPU upgrade for a PC, I also always go back to some games and play them again when I get a better GPU.

I care a Lot now that I enjoy lots of only games like overwatch, apex and rocket league.
I know those games eventually will get patches to run native on ps5, but for now, retrocompat es enough

It's nice to have backwards compatibility, but it's not mandatory or very important to me. I prefer if companies focused on new games and IP's over playing old games on a brand new console.

I feel it would be one of the best things Sony could do, look at this video of ps1 games in 4k and the potential of having this on ps5 would be a massive win but Sony don't share the enthusiasm

On an importance scale of 0 to 10:

PS1 = 8/10
PS2 = 10/10
PS3 = 8/10
PS4 = 10/10

Right now I have my PS3 60gb hooked up to my TV and that covers PS1, PS2, and PS3. It would be nice to move that out and replace that and the Pro with one machine. But it's not going to happen. Barring that I would rather replace my PS4 entirely than have to keep it around to play this or that game.

Eh, not very much to me. If they had included it I may have used it a couple times for some of my older games, but it has no impact of me buying their new system. I've already played the old games, I haven't played the new ones.

If it had PS3 BC I probably would've bought one so I could get rid of the loud as fuck PS3 phat and slim that I still own. I care for BC, especially from the PS360 gen.

I really like what Microsoft did with old games this gen. PS5 should have BC at least for Ps3 games... would be crazy to replay motorstorm, metal gear 4 and others in 4k/60fps

Its not important for me at all. You all think its important but its not. In 3 months time you wont even remember BC is a thing.

It actually is important to many folks, especially ppl that want all their previous digital games in one place, balls to holding onto a loud af ps4 pro...

Backwards compatibility for me is a big deal. Not a deal breaker but I will be profoundly disappointed if Sony doesn't figure this out at some point this gen.

There are games that i would love to revisit that are locked on previous gens, specifically sony, that I would spend $$$ on.

Games like the suikoden series, Xeno (saga and gears), Vagrant Story. Metal Gear. These seem like important games to the playstation brand and I can't play them without going out and buying old/used hardware.

Same boat as you boss. The only game interesting to me for next gen us demons souls. At $130 AUD for this game. Forget it. The console in Aus has an extra $50USD value on top. $599 for the DE version. At that price it is not worth it for 1 game. Will wait a while I think.

I also want to play all the metal gear and silent hill games. Where can I do that?
Totally agree with you, were getting riped hard here.
Only Demon Souls is what I'm interested in also. But at that cost no way.
Thankfully CP2077 will be out in Nov and that will occupy me for a while before think about committing to a next gen console.

Increasingly so- since we never got Resistance and Dead Space remastered, and I have already had to get my PS3 disc drive repaired once, I am kinda hating Jim Ryan right now.

ps1 ps2 and ps3 i dont care,if its there like xbox its nice but not necesary,ps4? thats another different thing,its very valuable

It will be useful if they can be played from a standard USB3 HD, if they require the internal SSD, then I won't use it.

I'm buying a PS5 at launch to play DeS, I have no urge for BC. If it works for GoW and BB in 12 months when I want a break from DeS I "might" use it.

They won't, if the ps4 can run it off an external the ps5 better damn well be able to do so as it has updated IO.

I think BC is important because of the investing in the eco system. If you are all Sony then being able to play the games you bought last gen is important now. PS3-PS4 I can see the reason why it wasn't, but now that the architecture Is x86 it shouldn't be extremely hard and there really is not any excuse to not be able to at least play your ps4 games on ps5. Even if it isn't enhanced or whatever.

Extremely important I expect to play ever digital ps4 game that I've purchased no if's about it and now I'm reading you can't use your save files? Shit is about to be wack and Sony going the XBone route if it's true

It's extremely important and essential for me. My PS4 library is quite large and my launch PS4 won't last forever. So it will be fantastic to have those games be playable on the ps5.

New gen new games.

I give my PS4 away.

only waifu otakus care about back compatibility. Pretty sure if for some miracle they get a girlfriend and later she dump him, damnn he will be in rage mode ..... back compatibilityyyy, killlll

I bought a PS3 shortly after launch and for the first few weeks, it was my dedicated HD movie and FF XII machine. PS2 games looked so good on it that I didn't mind not playing PS3 games on it.

Fairly important.. I really want to play my backlog on PS5 and not PS4 due to load times...

Almost that entire backlog is a part of Sony's PSN+ promotion, so I'm pretty well set!

I have many physical games across all four generations, BC is not essential but it would be a great bonus for me if they added it. I also wouldn't mind paying more for a console with that feature.

I think Sony missed a good opportunity with the PS5 to celebrate their rich history and tie it together into one console.
