How is FF14:ARR? Trying to decide on it.

I stopped playing after I failed a dungeon and my party members were telling me how terrible I was and that i wasted their time.

I saw it a lot when I played 2.0. You just have to learn to laugh and ignore them. There's a lot of toxic people in XIV (it's a common thing in MMOs).

I've bounced off this game a few times. Figured I'd try again even if I doubt I'll get hooked on another MMO. Here's hoping I haven't been booted from the GAF company on Ultros since I last logged on!

Put 30 hours in during my first month on PC, and another 30 when I bought it for PS4.

Unfortunately I don't have the time to regularly play an MMO, but it's top tier. The story is actually really great too from what I experience, a first for me in an MMO

It's absolutely worth of the Final Fantasy name

Some of the things are overly linear. A tank is a tank, your level of customization is low as that tank can only use one weapon type. All of the skills are learned linearly, no branching path or tree or system where you buy the ones necessary to you. The spells increase in mana cost as you level almost making you feel like you're not getting that much stronger at first. All the classes even somewhat function similarly, you'll get two early spells/abilities that you will rotate/combo with for a little while until somewhere in or near lvl 20 where you get another.

What they did give for customization is allow you to use spells/abilities from other classes (up to a cap dependent on your level) though this is somewhat limited. You also will get about an attribute point every level after 10, but that is also somewhat obsolete as most will stick to one or two stats.

Once you hit cap things will finally start to open up a bit more. They did a few things right with Ninja as you will get mudras that can combine and form a different skill depending on the combination you chose. This made me feel like "Oh I can play my Ninja differently from others." Armor is another thing that opens up in customization end-game, not everyone is wearing the same thing which is a plus in an mmo. So in the end the game gets much better and the customization opens open up a bit but I still feel like it needs more.

Nonetheless, I'm still playing so it is certainly a fun game, you just got to get to the end-game for all that to start.

How bad are the trial restrictions (lvl20 cap, no free campanys etc.)?
I played during the last 2 beta phases on pc in 2013 but had no time for the full game when it released and now I might be ready to get into it.
If the trial stuff is bad and I can get to lvl 20 in 1 day or something then I'll get the full game for 10€ from steam with the 30 days for free.

Thinking of buying it too.

Is there a "definite" version for PS4? The titles confuse me and I am not very knowledgable about MMORPGs so I dont know how patches, add-ons etc. work.

How much do you have to pay for online? I heard it was monthly but dont know the exact price (in euro pls)

I fall very much on the 'Huge FF fan who doesn't play MMOs' side of things, and I love this game despite barely scratching the surface(been playing for about a week). The quality of the art style and the music are exactly what you'd expect from a mainline entry into the franchise. The world is gorgeous, immense, and absolutely oozing with lore, fan service, and that unique brand of charm found only in Final Fantasy games. The story is a bit slow, but really begins to sing around lvl 11 or 12; I already feel incredibly invested in my character and everything going on. The battle system has a sort of rythmic flow to it, like counting dance steps almost. Hitting your beats, adjusting on the fly, and dispatching enemies efficiently is super satisfying if not a little addictive.

So yeah, imo FFXIV is a must play for anyone looking for a quality RPG, and definitely a no-brainer for Final Fantasy fans.

There is just one version of the game and one expansion to that base game. The game you need to buy in order to play is called "A Realm Reborn". The expansion pack is named "Heavensward". All of the content in Heavensward other than the new race is currently locked behind completing the main story of A Realm Reborn first, so no need to rush out and buy it immediately. All of the patches are downloaded automatically when you boot up the game, to keep everyone on the same version at all times.

Monthly fee is €7.69 for the Entry subscription and €8.99 for the Standard. The only difference between the two is that the Entry lets you have up to 8 characters total, and only one per server, while the Standard lets you have a lot more characters and multiple per server. Since alts are not necessary in order to play different classes, it is really easy to get by on just the Entry subscription.

Combat is slow as molasses unfortunately.

Yup this is my only real complaint as well. The graphics are nice, music is great, story is acceptable for a MMO, but the combat just gets plain boring after awhile. I'm sure with the expansion they added higher levels and new skills and such, but they really need to overhaul the fighting system. All you end up doing is spamming the same combos over and over while occasionally adding buffs, and dodging red circles/cones to avoid damage.

Too bad I can't stand battle systems with auto-attacks found in a lot of MMOs.
Xenoblade was okay because mostly everything else was great (even if I am not a big fan of the game, I enjoyed it enough to consider it very good, just not amazing), and SAO Hollow Fragment was just terrible.

I don't think this game is for me, as much as I like Final Fantasy.

I think I'm going to try that out. Have been waiting for steam sale to drop it to $10 dollars like amazon, but that doesn't seem to be happening. I'm such a cheap bastard. $20 is nothing lol
It's ÂŁ10 + 25% voucher (frontpage) on Greenman Gaming. Not the Steam version, but unless you really want to use your Steam wallet rather than buy "Crysta" on Mogstation, it's probably better to go with non-Steam as you'll be locked into Steam store for expansions, or so they're saying.

DON'T FORGET THE RECRUIT-A-FRIEND CODES if you pay for game time. You'll get some free stuff and in particular the one who gave you the code will receive mounts and shiny things if you keep playing.

Thinking of buying it too.

There is a bundle that contains the base game and the expansion. Does not contain Early Access, but unless you somehow manage to get to 50 in less than 3 days it's not going to matter. I suppose you might miss out on a few cosmetic items as well.

Was curious to try it as well, do you guys suggest the PS4 or PC version?

Getting a demo from Steam, but can't find the trial version for PS4.

It's a nice world with beautiful music, but the combat is nothing special.

OP, if you have a PC try Tera instead. It's on steam and it's free and there's no monthly sub. The combat in Tera makes FF14 look lame by comparison.

It's one of the better mmos out right now. I enjoy the game, but boy do I hate the combat. levels 1-40 will be boring as all hell (and you're stuck doing dungeons which are snorefests). And from 40-60 you get more buttons but it still ends up being boring. Play the trial, if you like it then it's definitely worth getting.

If you have a pc that can play it on dx11 with high fps then go for the pc version. I play on both though since you can play with your character no matter what platform you're on. Ps4 trial is on the PS store.

It's easy to stop playing and pick back up, gameplay related. You're not tied down to log in every so often unless you have a dedicated static that are trying to do something. You can always hold off on getting certain gear until they add another piece of gear, then another and another. The gear in the game are stats increases, and they make the previous gear easier to get, and so on. To me it's better to just wait something out and maybe go back in like for this expansion. You don't feel obligated, or hooked on logging back in [FFXIV: Non Habit Forming].

The payment methods supplement what I said above making it easy to play when you want. They make it so you can cancel you sub at any time without having to wait until you use the last drop of your paid time. Then you can subscribe again whenever you want without having to wait on their subscription refresh (usually near the first day of the month) to get the maximium amount of days like FFXI's old subscription system.

It also looks pretty to me.

Probably try it and see if the gameplay is something you like and can put up with.

I stopped playing after I failed a dungeon and my party members were telling me how terrible I was and that i wasted their time.

In my experience, this is a very isolated community reaction that rarely happens. Most of the time, frustrated players will just remove themselves from the group at the first sign of trouble. Almost just as often players will take the time to explain boss mechanics or have the patience to get everyone on the same page, fully understanding that practice and observation is really necessary to get through many of these bosses and dungeons.

Can't recommend the game enough. Has shot up to being one of the best MMO's I have ever played as well.

If anyone gives feels like giving it a go PM me and I can get you a referal code thing that gets you some items that'll help you level a bit quicker. Also if you think of playing play on Ultros and join the GAF guild.

When going through a dungeon for the first time it's always best to notify the party of it so they can explain mechanics to you if there are any. Also be aware that DPS classes have the longest wait time for dungeons and trials. If you want to get into things quickly play a Tank or Healer (and read up a little on how tanking works in this first, just a little to know what bars mean what and what provoke does).

I really like this game. FFXI was my favourite MMO because it just felt so good and like a real world but this takes that and makes it way more accessible. IT's like WoW if it was interesting!
no offense to WoW but I don't care for the lore

I started playing it about a week ago.

I'll start with the minuses

-Lots of fetch quests in the beginning
-Very text/reading based story
-Time to level feels long
-Dungeon difficulty/class rotation is simple for a quite a few levels
-lots of traveling
-no ui xml addons, I wish dev's would work on API + LUA for all games like Blizzard did and Valve just did with DOTA 2.
-I hear pvp isn't as balanced/developed but it exists. Never tried it for myself though.
-zones so far have been bland
-game is limited by ps3, though my friend tells me yoshiP wants to ditch ps3 at some point

Pluses
+Responsive mmo, most responsive one I played since wow
+Story gets better as you go on, but still plenty of filler
+A good amount of game systems already implemented that are found in every mmo's
+Dungeons get more challenging
+Class system is really cool, basically you can play any class by switching your weapons, so you can be anything you want on one character. You get lots of bonus exp leveling up a class that isn't your highest level.
+Combat system is good, classes have established rotations and rHeavensward just expanded on it.
+Dev's aren't homogenizing so much yet, I like looking over the Heavensward skill list and seeing some classes getting new mechanics. DPS warrior stance has me excited.
+encounter design is good and bosses actually have good animations and convey information well

Basically out of all the mmo's I've played WoW I haven't seen as good foundation work + potential as this game. The closest was warhammer online but that was mostly potential and not so much foundation work.

Best MMO I have ever played but it is not like I have played a lot. To me it is the best Final Fantasy experience as of this moment.

Anyone new add me as a friend - send me a PM first though.

What sort of roles is the GAF guild looking for? I'm proficient in tanking and DPS. Never got hardcore with healing, but I definitely like a challenge.

That said, how HARDCORE IImII is the GAF guild >.>

Excellent MMO for anyone with a full time job and social life, or kids/wife. The time commitment isn't nearly that of other MMO's and you can log in, play for a couple hours, and actually feel like you accomplished something. Plus it's super fun.

Keep in mind that patch 3.0(Heavensward adjustments) just dropped last Friday, which adds several enhancements to the 1-50 leveling progression curve. Should help that sting a bit if you are in a rush to blaze past content to endgame.

I do agree that dungeons(particularly during progression) can feel a bit rote and simple given how likely you are to be matched with experienced players with powerful gear(even when scaled). Some of them are really smartly designed, but like most MMO's, any sign of mass frustration against quick clears from the community leads to nerfs and stale runs.
Some of us remember Qarn at launch...fondly

I thought it was pretty good, but I approached it as someone who wanted more FFXI, not another modern, post-WoW MMO, and that's pretty much exactly what it is. However, they did some great things with controller controls (I still prefer the macro bar from XI, but options would be good in an ideal world).

I recently played for a couple months before diving into ESO.

FF14 is a nicely polished game, and it's easy to understand the mechanics and kind of jump in. However, it feels like a game that is too scared to venture away from it's own formula.

The entire game is incredibly linear, from items, to zones, to skills, etc. There is no real variety to the game. The quests are incredibly fetch heavy, and many of them will have you travelling all over the world back and forth just to talk to people.

On the plus side the character and monster designs are top notch. But beyond this, the game is pretty forgettable. Unless you're super into FF and love to read tons of dialogue, the game is a definite pass. GW2 and ESO are both infinitely better.

Yeah I was about level 30 before thurs maintenance, now I'm 42. The main quest boost helped a bit, 41 was the first dungeon I'd call difficult. They certainly do a decent job at teaching new players raid behavior through the hests. It's good the dungeons aren't so difficult in the beginning.

Don't play it. It ruined my life for 45 days.
I'm actually glad I can't afford to play it anymore so I can finish college D:
I regret nothing, though.
That's how this game is to me.

I could try to tell you how good is the battle system, the story and the world/gameplay, but I really think you should try it yourself. The first hours make it look like it's just an average MMORPG with nice scenes, but don't be fooled by that.

(i wanna play heavensward, stupid dollar conversion prices i___i)

It's really one of my favorite mmos. Tons of content, PvP could be improved big time but the game offers more content than any mmo I've ever played, extremely smooth frame rate most of the time on ps4 and its very easy to be just as viable with a controller during end game as keyboard and mouse users. Heavensward also made this game so much better.

It's really good. The only thing that I didn't like was that it was hard to not look like a level 1 peasant 80% of the time. Once you're lvl50 then you're in the clear though.

I recently jumped back in two days ago but sadly its lost its charm for me.
i have a lvl 50 dragoon but just cant get back into it.

I have not played since before xmas. I think due to playing games like Dark souls 2, witcher , bloodborne etc jumping back in to mmo combat feels very jarring and not fun.

I actually just played for like 10 days. I think I'm done. I'm not a huge fan of MMOs in the first place, and I was really hoping this would be the one that would break me. It wasn't.

But if you like MMOs, you'll probably enjoy it.

It's similar to most other MMOs, where I'd log in one day and wonder why the hell I'm playing this. It has it's merits, but there's nothing that really makes it a must play. It hits the spot for awhile.

I would say it's a fun game, especially if you have friends to play with. I'm probably in the minority in that I think the story is pretty terrible, but the music and world are beautiful enough that it almost makes up for slogging through it. After starting a new class at 30, I would say it's almost too accessible.

What I do is watch streams or youtubes of the fights or new classes. I kinda get full after a few videos. Saw some flying birds, and new bosses, and after I see better examples of the new classes I'll probably be done with the expansion.

Honestly I quit right when they went grindy and ran out of content, at about the Atma stage and will not come back until it is less grindy and actually fun again. Had a couple million and bunch of crafting stuff in the bank at the time. It's really fun to a certain point.

But you gotta go when you gotta go. You can't waste your life in this IMO when there is barely any worthwhile stuff. Some might disagree. I think it's reasonable advice.

If you liked SWTOR You'll probably like ARR about the same - they're both highly wow derivative in terms of mechanics, so it'll feel 'similar' at least. They both have the same strength - a strong focus on story while levelling. Aside from that, it's the same as any other wow clone.

ARR was definitely one of the better of that genre, I enjoyed my time with it then set it aside (much like SWTOR), and will check out the xpac sometime just to play that content as well.

Been playing for a couple of months. It's pretty fun, looks great, and has loads to keep you busy with daily challenges. I really like how there's multiple methods of getting xp through fates (random pop missions) and levequests (level and job specific quests) that are for you class, but also craft and gathering classes too. Even turning in specific items in your city to an NPC is a fairly valid and minimal effort way to level a craft or gathering job.

The biggest downside is there's just so many quests it's hard to keep up, and many of the story quests are just run back and forth between locations but I don't think any other MMO offers anything different. It's fine though, just another way to earn xp!

You should play The Secret World.

Utterly generic and has the most tedious uninspired quests in existence. Even early WoW quests could be called epic and exciting in comparison. Job system for farming tasks is also ridiculously bad and makes no sense whatsoever.

I absolutely love FFXIV, but it has its high and lows. I think the highs are incredible, and a lot of the dungeon/boss/raid content is utterly fantastic, and the zones are well built.

Combat is well designed and engaging, and each of the classes has a cool gimmick to them that makes them unique.

The main story quest had pacing issues early on, and continues to have pacing issues at times, but it's THE best main story campaign in an MMO I've ever played.

The BEST part of the game is the sheer amount of content that gets released for free. Between ARR's release and the release of Heavensward, S-E has released patches every 3 or so months that introduces 3 new dungeons, new raid content, and new story content.

It's simply staggering the amount of stuff they keep adding.

They also style entire pieces of content around specific FF games (eg. the Crystal Tower raid is styled after the last dungeon of FF3jp).

Definitely check out the trial, and see how you like it. It's one of my most favorite FF worlds, and what I look to as the quintessential "FF" universe at this point.

Full disclosure: I've been playing since the release of ARR on PS4 (April 2014) and quit for a few months leading up to Heavensward. I've now resubscribed for the expansion.

Such an amazing game, it looks pretty, has an amazing soundtrack and it's really really fun!

It's also a massive love letter to Final Fantasy

Only downside I have is if you are soloing the game as a DPS you'll have some long wait ques to join a dungeon if you play with friends....or GAF it's better
