How is Nintendo hurt by not doing an E3 press conference?

wildfire

Banned
It was bugging me in the other thread because people were equating no conference meaning no presence at E3.

While this is clearly false in an attempt to prove the point that the press cover Nintendo as much as MS and Sony I have been proven wrong.

Just sampling the first 10 pages of Google results and ignorning every website that is clearly gaming centric.

Microsoft post conference mentions: 26
MS announcements of live blogs or conference occurring: 3

Nintendo post conference mentions: 17
Ninty announcements of live blogs or conference occurring: 1

Sony post conference mentions: 13
Sony announcements of live blogs or conference occurring: 14

Microsoft and Sony post conference: 16

Some things to take note of:

Nintendo was being bashed in 3 of the article but at least all of them talk about what Nintendo announced.

8 articles about Microsoft were about the poorly made rape joke with a female presenter who didn't play the demoed game that well and barely mentioned what MS was trying to sell so I would discount their total mentions from 26 to 16.

Surprisingly there were more non-gaming outlets live blogging MS and Sony events so Nintendo is hurting themselves in a small way with that.

The biggest thing that hurts them is how Microsoft and Sony are lumped in together as console makers and Nintendo is almost never mentioned. This lack of association hurts Nintendo a lot. Even though Nintendo is roughly equal to Microsoft and Sony for individual articles, in group articles they aren't getting coverage so Sony and MS come out way ahead.

What was Sony's Press Conference like last year?
What was Microsofts Press Conference like last year?

I bet you have a clear idea of what happened and what was shown at both in your head, even a year later.

What happened at the E3 Nintendo Direct? No one has any idea. It wasnt special.

That is the problem.

I'll post what I wrote in the last thread :

You really should listen to me a bit more on this.

I mean, granted, it's just my opinion... but of course gaming press is going to be negative about it, because they are being cut out of the conversation. When you start promoting and talking through 'owned channels,' then you get the traffic. You're basically taking traffic away from press outlets, and letting consumers participate without their lens.

The press hasn't been kind to them for awhile, so this let's the main messaging get out to potential purchases through Nintendo's rose-tinted view. The sad part is, it works, but it mostly has to happen because of the vitriol the media is giving them in the first place. It's a cycle, just look at all the negativity today in what should be a big win for 'core fans,' since they are actively being called to take part in experiencing something that was typically reserved for elite access press.
Or maybe it's the fact that even regular press such as Forbes knows this is a bad idea. Nintendo isn't in the position to opt-out on another conference. I've said this before, but conferences generate hype. Nintendo needs as much attention and "hype" from conferences/press/more in order to stay in relevancy.

Nintendo is releasing big-sellers this year and needs as much consumer attention as possible for them to sell well. IMO, Smash Bros. and MK won't even be highly known as their predecessors were, especially when we're looking at a time where the target market consists mainly of those who have yet to even attain a console, (assuming you believe Smash Bros and Mario Kart appeal to the "blue ocean" like most people do.) Nintendo needs to be working double-time on marketing the console and games now as consumers don't even know that any of these products are coming out yet. Online conferences will not do anything for Nintendo.

I would like to throw out marketing terms like "prescence" and "awareness" and state that games won't sell their full potential,
W101
, without advertising like this, though I know most people will go and call bullocks on it as it is "ignoring the power of these franchises" but I just don't think so.

I've been a fan for Nintendo ever since my first console/handheld, and I don't have the "rose-tinted glasses" to see that Nintendo is going into irrelevancy in ways that other companies would have already went under by now. I simply don't think the press is thinking "oh I'm not a part of this so I hate Nintendo" as they can/definitely will simply report what is online, however I think they see the situation as I do, Nintendo needs to shape-up if they want to perform at their fullest potential.

Edit: People on here are delusional. Press conferences and first impressions mean everything. Microsoft's policies and showings on stage of the initial Xbox One has had lingering effects to this day. There are people that honestly believe that the X1 is mainly about TV and TV-Games, save for a few franchises like CoD and Halo.

They're not. But the fact they've elected not to hold one, just like last year, probably suggests to some that they've got a boring lineup to share, just like last year too.

Well, to be fair, it wasn't special because they didn't have an overwhelmingly interesting lineup and announcements, not because the same news wasn't shown in a different manner at E3.

Without looking it up, can you describe one interesting thing from the E3 direct?

I am a Nintendo fan with a Wii U and a 3DSXL, I want Nintendo to succeed. They need hype to get some sort of traction in the market place.

Anyone who believes that Sony would be in the same place concerning how consumers view them as they would be without that press conference (and the Sony Meeting) are kidding themselves. It's not all about the dry information. The presentation of it counts for a lot, otherwise no one would bother with conferences at all and every piece of news would be given via press releases.

The interesting thing for me was Mega man in smash. I don't give a shit about anyone else, or the fact you're a nintendo fan. You making blanket statements like that is stupid.

They're not NECCESSARILLY hurt by it, but they probably will be. Last year's Nintendo Direct:
-Was incredibly laggy and difficult to watch (hell, it didn't even work for me in America, I had to swap to the European stream)
-Had incredibly, incredibly little to show
-Featured Iwata, who, imo, is a much worse presenter than Reggie (who would likely present most of a live conference).

So, I think it's less that not having an E3 press conference is a bad thing, and more that when they didn't do one last year, it sucked, so people are expecting this one to suck.

The problem is the lack of content, not the lack of conference itself. You would remember a Nintendo Direct just as well as a conference if it was packed with megatons.

I honestly don't remember the details of many pressers

I can rattle off some of the games for all 3.

But that's about it.

And it's a weird metric. I mean that's important in the moment, but do consumers go
"Oh man that moment with the laser tag is the reason I'm buying this game at Christmas!" or something

If it does hurt them, it's during a period like this. Where the narrative over the next 6 weeks will be they aren't showing up at e3, the've given up, they don't compete with Sony and MS, they don't have anything of note. Even if its true or not, it is a terrible position to be in especially when they are in a currently rocky position as it is

Promotion of the Wii U as a console and redefining it to consumers.

Promotion of Smash Bros.

Promotion of Mario Kart

Promotion of Teased Zelda title.

Promotion of the highly likely Animal Crossing U.

Promotion of 3DS titles like Tomodachi life.

Promotion of NFC title that utilizes new feature.

Nothing though right? And these are all things known/highly likely that we know of as of yet.

It doesn't ever seem like Nintendo wants to be lumped in with Microsoft and Sony though. They just aren't being clear enough about how and why they are doing some different from Microsoft and Sony.

As others have said, it's now how they announce things but what they announce. I agree with this to some extent, but I at least want to see what they're announcing live, and last E3 the stream was so choppy that I had to watch the video after it was over and uploaded.

I think it's mostly perception that they have given up and feel they can't compete so they just go and do their own thing to appeal to existing Nintendo fans.

If you have big announcements or really want to showcase your products, you typically want to do it on stage in front of a big audience. It's part of the show.

The fact that they stopped doing E3 just as their business started a downturn was very telling and the press certainly made note of it. Nintendo not doing E3 again this year will generate the same headlines.

Sony and Microsoft are the stars while Nintendo is off doing its own little niche thing.

It strikes me as admitting they can't swing with the big boys. I like that they're doing something else with Smash and all.

But if their E3 presentation is on the same as last year, they have a problem. And they're missing out on essentially the one time a year the mainstream gives a damn about what they have to say.

Hey, remember when Sony dropped bombs last E3, which directly influenced where they're at today? You make news at E3, not through a web stream only your hardcore fans see.

As long as Sony didn't say they were doing the same thing as Microsoft, they could have said anything to win last year's E3.

Microsoft dug such a hole, their competition didn't have to do anything to come out on top.

If you watch all they did was say "Whatever M$ is doing... we aren't doing! ...Yaaay we won E3!"

Well that's easy
MS- Shooters, Project Spark, and some more shooter
Sony- Indie games, $400 usd, the status quo of DRM, and The Order
Ninty- umm... Bayonetta 2

I remember that they were crap, the Sony one was a little bit less crap because the "No DRM" thing was kinda funny.

There was a giant ovation when they announced that and Microsoft "180" has still not take full effect as the NO/DRM issue was the most reasoned news in the event.

It sucks that we live in a world where a company saying that they aren't planning on screwing you over is dropping a bomb.

Same thing that was said about last year - no physical presence in the form of a conference means a smaller amount of coverage in the media.

While not a cause and effect, clearly the last year has proven that the Nintendo Direct certainly didn't help Nintendo in marketing and sales.

How they deliver it is so far secondary to what they actually deliver that I think the debate is a little premature.

If they have nothing to show, they shouldn't scream about it.
