How long do you plan on staying a gamer?

Once I start having kids I'll probably take a small hiatus ( next 2 - 5 years ) then continue on once they get older. Been gaming for 28 years... I don't see it ending anytime soon.

Well I plan on staying a gamer as long as I can I guess, unless I *GASP* outgrow it.

I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter. It'll be weird to think when she's 5 or 7 years old coming home from school with homework and Daddy is playing games.

But yet, I worked all day, so I get to play. She has to do homework, then she can play (go out, play games, whatever she'll be doing at that age).

I don't think I'll ever stop, having a kid has slowed me down and cut my time down, but I still play nightly and when wife and kid are asleep.

I've been a gamer for as much as I can remember.
I remember the Atari 2600 entering the house, the first coin-ops played (berzerk, galaga), all the way up (commodore vic 20, 64, 128, sega master system, amiga... ).
I was also one of the firsts to play games on the PC, I spent countless hours on Grand Prix Circuit, F15 Strike Eagle II, Prince of Persia, Gods, and a lot of older games with names that I can't remember...

Now, a bit older and not any wiser, I don't plan to stop, and from time to time there is something that renews my love for videogames. :)

Halo and GTA4 huh? Yeah, I concede. You're right. Games aren't made for teens. :lol. At least say Heavy Rain or Braid or something.

And those statistics you claim are absolutely bogus. Everyone knows they are. If you played solitaire, you're a gamer? Played Spades on Pogo? Gamer. If you bought GTAIV for your 16 year old kid, you're a gamer. They're bogus bias stats and aren't even bothering to disguise it. Oh and they seem to magically go up 2 or 3 years every year. Weird huh.
Distinguish between mature and adult-rated. Distinguish between "has played a game before" and a "gamer." Don't re-interpret for the sake of making me sound dumb because that doesn't work and it only does the opposite.

First interpret the point someone makes before responding to them, please. If you don't then you're just talking to yourself.
as the gamer generation grows up, so too will games.

as we get older the market for games aimed at people with our aging interests will grow and people will make games for that market.

it's just a matter of fact really. gaming will become almost as ubiquitous as the other mediums eventually as it grows up with us. as that happens the type of games in the market will become much broader and the market will grow.

the time may come when the hard core gamer represents a minority of the home console market, but people won't stop making games aimed at them.

I generally have to agree. The days where gaming was considered "kiddy" was back in the time of the NES/SNES, when we had these "Save the Princess" beat-em-ups.

The audience and the developer has grown up, and titles like Bioshock and Max Payne would have found much less celebration if released in those times.

'Til death.

I'm sure someone has said exactly those words in the last 7 pages.

*reads thread*

How the hell should I know when I'll outgrow it? I'll tell you this, if there was some sort of milestone that I wish I could foresee it will be the day I stop making it to the toilet. Games? That can stay or go.

Well, I hate the term "Gamer" with a fiery burning passion, so I plan on playing games as long as I watch movies, read books and listen to music.

What a weird question.

I'm 40 and I've been gaming since I was 3 years old. If was ever going to quit, I'd have quit by now.*

That said, I wouldn't be too surprised if eventually gaming evolves into something that's so different and weird and unfamiliar to me that I lose interest. I've already gotten a taste of this from the heavy shift towards online multiplayer, which is something I couldn't care less about even if I was dead.

*I actually lost interest in games when I was about 14 in favor of music, and I didn't come back to gaming until about 7 years later, kinda by accident; I bought an SNES as part of a scheme to establish credit after I finished school. I kinda owe my gaming career since then to Super Mario World.

When you do game, and you think about stopping, it's a wierd thought and you think why would you ever stop when it can be so fun? But like everything else done for fun it can just phase out and you never really notice or care. So yea, that's when I'll stop.

I guess for as long as developers continue making games that interest me. My grandmother played from the time she got my uncles an Atari console up until PS2, just before she passed away. She beat the first Legend of Zelda before I did, and was a huge fan of the early Tomb Raider games.

Threads like this baffle me. Video games, as a valid source of modern entertainment, just aren't something everyone "grows out of." We've reached the point where these aren't simply toys for children, so to see questions like this come from someone who plays them is truly puzzling.

I'm not a gamer. I'm just...a guy. I play games, sure -- have since I was about five or six -- and I'm 38 now. Take from that what you will, I guess.

As long as good games come out, I'll continue buying them but the moment this industry switches to 100% digital distribution then I'm done.

Damn... never man :p. I'll be the old dude still playing the newest shit coming out :lol . Coolest grandpa ever!

Mid thirties here, and all of my friends keep playing as do I. Only difference I have noticed is that people have more money to spend on gaming nowadays :D

30 here.
The day I finally die, I expect they'll have to pry a controller (or, more likely given recent trends, a handheld system) out of my cold, dead clutches.

I'm less than two weeks away from being 36 and I still love it and I've been gaming since about five or six. Looks like I'll be a lifelong gamer.

Depends on the games coming out.

As long as Im interested in games. The interest is fading away slowly as there are too much games with good graphics only and shitty content.

So the reason why I don't play many games is work. Social interaction and get togethers usually involves them but not single player stuff. So if I were to become a stay at home mom, bam! More gaming!

Forever if possible. Though my enthusiasm for videogames has been waning in recent years (and genres I don't have an interest in (shooters) dominating doesn't help). Still I do still rpgs, card and board games to supplement my videogames.

I plan to be a gamer so long they'll have to bury me with my hands gripping the controller, I'm that hardcore.

That makes you a gamer in my eyes.

I see myself gaming probably till the day I die, or at least till my body allows it. It's also what life throws at me that can change my gaming habits (wife, kids).

I'm single now so it's easy to find time to play games. But sometimes life has some priorities that you just can't ignore.

Sometimes I feel like I'm getting to a point where I feel like this may be the last gen of consoles I'll play with (I'm 38). But when I see all the cool stuff coming down the line, plus the potential another gen can bring....

I get excited all over again and think, yeah, till I die...

I can't imagine people saying "Oh a new system came out. The wii2 with hd graphics and full motion control. I'm gonna stop playing because this is my last generation."

Probably my whole life. It's just like a movie or another type of entertainment. At least it's not gambling :lol

In many ways it is :P

forever...

I have been gaming since I was 3-4 and I am 32 now. I can't imagine being done gaming. I have periods where I spend less time and become occasional gamer...but I could never see going like a month without playing something.
