How much did Microsoft pay to secure Titanfall as a timed exclusive?

Titanfall will be worth it for MS until the moment a PS4 version is brought up. Considering it's the only touted game they have past launch, it was a smart move.

Don't be naive, of course they paid. They've paid EA large amounts of money to bulk up their lineup.

Hahahahaha....yeah they paid, don't fool yourself to think otherwise.

Just no. Of course they paid for the exclusivity.

Nah, it is likely something to do with a deal. Because there is 360 version not from same studio.

They paid, otherwise PS3/4 would get it. MS are not the only with cloud services.

What is the point of a thread asking an opinion on something that we don't have an answer to if people can't give theirs without people going on the offensive.

I gave reasons, I don't think their small team could deliver another version in a decent timescale and they were interested in what MS was bringing to the table with the cloud.

I am thinking not a massive amount, since it would benefit Respawn to have the publicity, so maybe a few million? It was obviously more than Sony could afford.
Joke!!!

180 Million

j/k

It probably didn't cost them anything maybe MS decided they would market it for EA free of charge, deals like that could happen.

I don't think my comment was on the offensive. Sorry if it looks like it was.let's see your reasons.

Yes that's true, but that didn't stop them from using another devs to port to X360. So they can do the same with PS3/4 versions.

and they were interested in what MS was bringing to the table with the cloud.

Like I said there's other cloud services beside MS Azure, and If Sony had seen Titanfall by the time MS saw it, I'm pretty sure they would have given them cheap cloud servers too.

It was more the fact that everyone jumped on it at the same time.

They will want to do a PS4 version themselves I think, the 360 version seems like an afterthought and maybe part of the negotiation, hence farmed out to someone else. I could be totaly wrong but I just can't see them having paid cash for this.

I do think they will have paid with services and marketing dollars though.

By the time it comes out PS4 would probably have 5-6 million. I'd say it will sell 600k max so EA is "loosing" $24 million. EA is EA though so they probably charged MS $50 million.

A timed exclusive for a brand new ip in the first year of a new console?

I'm thinking not an overwhelming amount.

$100 Million + Advertising

$50 Million for the deal
$50 Million for the additional help, including development kits and developers...
(they helped optimize.)

Microsoft to pay for some of the advertising.

It's most likely a one year timed exclusive. Whatever they paid, I'm betting EA got a great deal and will pretty much 100% bring it to PS4 and benefit from sales on that platform as well if the series becomes a hit. (We're talking about a publisher who bought ME1, a game PUBLISHED by MS to PS3). EA will be laughing all the way to the bank.

We have no proof but you really believe there's other reasons besides money ? lol, just no.

Don't be naive, Microsoft needed to secure that game, they saw the potential and payed what it needed to have it exclusive on their platform. Same as Mass Effect 1 on the 360. EA would never let one of their most promising games, made by the guys who made what Call of Duty is today, land on only one home console, just not good business. Microsoft definitely payed big money. That's how business works. Cloud ? marketing ? maybe but that's not the only reason, i say it's a combination of many things which money is a huge part of.

I agree that they may want to do PS4 version by themselves, but what about PS3 port? they don't need to do that, they can hand it to another team.
For me there's X360 version because EA likes money, as X360 version will certainly sell more than Xbox one version.

That could be true but I think if they asked Sony, Sony would probably help them just like MS. Also Titanfall is published by EA so I don't think they really need MS for marketing.

It's also being kept off PS3 too though.
Good point. That presumably cost them more than keeping it off PS4. It's still a new IP, though. Even with the amazing press, that's still a significant barrier. With a marketing push from MS to help it the cheque up front would need to be smaller too, presumably.

Not much; it's not even exclusive to the Xbone.

it is exclusive to xbone and 360, which are microsoft's consoles.

in the real world, there is not a lot of people in the section of the venn diagram which crosses both pc and console. most people either have a console or a gaming pc, not both.

EmptySpace thinks microsoft paid a lot, considering titanfall is not only exclusive to their consoles, but it was the closer to their e3 press conference and is being heavily marketed in all events. even microsoft executives are mentioning titanfall more than their own ip, forza.

No clue. Although what I would like to know is if Sony saw the same potential in it that MS saw. I wonder how the respective reps for the two companies reacted when they saw it. The Xbox team has become pretty damn good at spotting a decent shooter and buying some form of exclusivity.

Yeah I'm sure that's the reason. PvZ Garden Warfare is probably the same, Popcap could make 4 versions of the game but not 5, so they left PS4 out.

The real question is...how much is Respawn gonna lose by not launching on PS4 also.

I could be wrong but I think they prob bet on MS and the One trouncing Sony and signed the deal pre-E3/Gamer DRM revolt/MS PR Nightmare/Massive PS4 Pre-Order rush/etc..

I'm sure if they had a time machine, knowing what they know now, they might not have taken the deal, especially for a "new" companies first offering.

Then again I'm just bitter since I'm pro-Sony :)

The amount paid would depend on how long the exclusivity lasts for. If it's a year, I think Pachter's estimate of 50 million is realistic. If it's 6 months, maybe the number was 30 million.

It will be interesting to see how long it lasts.

EA and Respawn are probably wishing they didn't sign this contract. Hopefully, the shitty sales on Xbone mean a speedy port to PS4/PS3

although it's hard to say where the millions of CoD players will go next gen.

Didn't Respawn recently say in an interview their is no contract for exclusivity? It was just their choice to put it on the X1 first, see the reaction and after profits would then have the money to take it to other platforms.

What?

How would that make sense?

Titanfall is not a small game by any means

No one is going to make a game like that and keep it to one next-gen console because we can

That's just silly

Money changed hands

Didn't MS help Respawn financially? I'm sure that when the company formed, MS probably gave them assistance and this is the follow through of that. So is this actually another "M$ throws money, while Sony/Nintendo makes fun happen with pillows and love" thread?

Gonna be funny when the X1 sales aren't as shitty as people like you are hoping they will be.

Yah pretty much you know the deal. "Company A funding game/ Company B monyhatting" etc etc...

360 version will outsell both the XBO and PC, probably combined, just due to the install base. But yeah, I don't expect it to do badly on any platform, it's a good looking game with positive word of mouth.

MS will do some awesome "Xbox Family" reports in the NPD's as well. :D

I guess MS hope people will actually skip the 360 and jump onto the Xbox One. Either way they win. Unless 99% of people get the PC version.

What was the point of this question?

It seems pretty self explanatory.

If you believe that is true, ask yourself this question. Why doesn't Respawn just say "yeah, it's coming to PS4 as soon as we can get it done"? There is no reason for them not to say that, UNLESS there was a contract that says they can't say that. This isn't really that complicated folks.

Or unless they don't know if they are going to/want to make a PS4 version or not.

It doesn't work that way. Like dude said earlier, Sony helping fund That game Company games is different than MS helping fund Respawn games because Sony is Sony and Sony gonna Sony.

Let's say Titanfall is projected by EA to sell ~3 million copies on X1 and X360 combined and ~2 million copies on ps3 and ps4.

That means MS must have paid more than (2 million * avg amount EA gets per copy sold) dollars.
