I feel like this is pretty good topic to discuss because of Nintendo hardware sales and the upcoming NX release.

When I think about the games that actually convinced me to get the 3DS, none of them were Mario. I recognize that Mario games are fun, and I've have played them in the past. However, I don't really seek out Mario games to add to my library.

I only own Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, because it was a preinstalled on my first 3DS. New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Mario Golf World Tour were Club Nintendo rewards. Super Mario 3D Land and Luigi's Mansion 2 are considered two of the very best games on 3DS, but I don't own them yet. I actually want to buy these, but other games have higher priority at the moment. If Smash Bros is considered a "Mario" game instead of just a Nintendo game, then that would be my only physical title.

I'm much more of Zelda guy. I already have Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds and OoT: 3D. I will certainly pick up Majora's Mask 3D at some point.

Aside from a lack of Mario, Nintendo IPs are otherwise represented solidly in my library.

I think it's safe to say that Nintendo will need more than just Mario to bring people back into their console base. The assumption is based simply on historical fact, because opinions are generally worthless. Nintendo have already spent previous console generations relying on him, and that didn't automatically lead them to huge success.

I never miss a Mario platformer or the good spinoffs (Mario Kart, Luigi's Mansion, M&L, etc). They're the reason I buy Nintendo consoles.

I'll play every mainline platformer. Mario Galaxy were the best games released last generation and despite not being the leap I wanted, Mario 3D world was fantastic as well.
Loved MK8 and Super Mario Maker as more recent examples. Still enjoy the NSMB series, but those aren't the big titles I look forward to.
The Mario and Luigi games are getting kind of bad so I think I might stop buying/playing those and if a spin off is bad I'll skip it too (Mario Tennis/Party).

I wasn't very big in Mario kart until Mario kart 8, which did reinvigorate my interest. The online is really fun

I hate the visual style of NSMB when compared to hand drawn 2D Mario, but I have enjoyed all of the 3D Marios across all platforms, except for the DS re-release of 64.

That said, I prefer Star Fox, F-Zero and Pikmin over both Mario and especially Zelda in terms of Nintendo's IPs. The 3DS has been a massive disappointment to me, because rail shooters and racing games lend themselves perfectly to 3D, and yet Nintendo dropped the ball on new additions to both Star Fox and F-Zero.

edit: In terms of the bigger picture, my favorite Nintendo hardware has been about third party games. The NES might as well have had a Konami logo on the box as far as I am concerned for example. The dwindling support in this area and the reduced relevance of Japan in general has really hurt Nintendo's platforms, though I have still bought them up to this point. A PC and a Wii U are the optimal combination so far this generation due to the lack of exclusives on the other consoles, though the PS4 may have that gap closed this year.

The previous generations had a lot of good Mario spinoffs, but that doesn't seem to be the case that much these days.

I found several copies of Mario Tennis Open on clearance for $14, and I was tempted to pick one of them up. I think it might be a decent buy at that price, so is it worth it? I will not be buying Sticker Star or Mario Party 3DS at any price.

The mainline platformers are typically worth buying, but like my first post stated, they are not true system sellers to me.

Almost none. I think the WiiU is the only console where I have more that1 Mario game (3D World, Kart, Super U as a CN reward, and Maker).

On the Wii, only Super Paper Mario.
On the GC, only Paper Mario.
On the N64, Mario Party.

The mainline Mario entries and Smash are the main reason I buy Nintendo consoles. 3D World is my favorite 3D platformer of all time and my game of the generation after Bloodborne. And the spinoffs besides Party usually range from decent to great; just finished Paper Jam yesterday and (mostly) had a blast.

I'd say probably about a fourth of the games I buy for Nintendo hardware have Mario in the title or are in some form or another a spinoff of the series (Yoshi, Wario, etc.)

If they release any Kart, 3D platformer or RPG I'll probably end up buying it, but don't care that much about others, like the minigame and sports games.
I spend more time with other games, though. Out of my twenty-something games on Wii U only 3 are Marios, unless you count Yoshi for some reason.

The only spinoff I've gotten with any consistency is Mario Kart*. If they make good RPGs again I'll buy those too.


*Unless you are one of the weirdos that counts Smash as a "Mario spinoff." Because I also buy those consistently.

Edit: That's also not counting spinoff series, like Wario or Yoshi, but I don't buy those consistently either.

I always get the 3D platformers, since they're fantastic. I'm a bit more hesitant to get the newer sidescrollers, so I wait for previews or impressions of those. Mariokart is usually a maybe. They're always fun, but I'm just not as into the series as I used to be. I can always play it when I visit my friends anyway, since they always pick them up. I don't bother with Mario Party anymore; stopped caring after 6, since I didn't like 5 or 6 at all. I played 10 with my friends when I was drunk, and didn't mind it that much actually. It at least felt a bit different.

Lost interest in Mario and Luigi after Partners in Time, lost interest in Paper Mario after Sticker Star. Didn't care for any of the Mario Vs DK games after the GBA one. Lost interest in Mario Tennis after Power Tennis; while I'm not a huge Mario Golf fan, I got the 3DS one through Club Nintendo and actually really enjoy it. Wasn't interested in Mario Maker, so I never picked it up.

That's all the current Mario-related games I can think of, not counting Luigi and Wario stuff. I guess I don't play that much of it after all.

As both 2d and 3d platformers are usually brilliant, I play all of them, as well as Mario Kart, Party, and Luigi's mansion. For the rest, it depends.

I own every Mario platformer, Mario Kart, RPGs and a couple of other spinoffs and have clocked in so many hours. My fiance and I have 96 hours on 3D World and 178 on Mario Kart 8. I play a hell of a lot of Mario games.

Not a Mario Party fan honestly, I love a lot more than Mario, own most primary Nintendo games that aren't spinoffs, lacking a few Kirby games.

I would also qualify as a weird one, but having those three ready for NX within the first year would help that system a lot. There hasn't been a really good Metroid game in a while, and that is a bummer.

The strange (and slightly sad) thing is that Pokemon Y heavily influenced my decision to get a 3DS, but that game ended up being a huge disappointment. Thankfully Fire Emblem, SMT IV, Etrian Odyssey, Animal Crossing, and several other games made my purchase more than worthwhile.

They are a pretty big reason why I buy Nintendo consoles, since my main platforms have traditionally been PC or Sony consoles over the past two decades (Sega before that). If it wasn't for Nintendo first party, I wouldn't even bother with Nintendo (home) consoles. Since I am not as big a Zelda or Metroid fan, Mario is the premier first party franchise in my eyes.

I bought a Wii U back in December. I currently own 6 retail games for it: Super Mario 3D World, Mario Maker, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

4 out of 6 feature Mario (Though I have played more GBA Fire Emblem on the console than I have those games so far).

I always buy the Mario Kart games, and I usually stick with them for a long time. At this point, Mario Kart 8 may very well be my most-played game of all-time (though a lot of that is because of KartGAF, probably would have dropped the game by now if not for them).

I used to buy the RPGs, but I've found myself losing interest in them lately. I have Sticker Star, but don't really have any desire to play it, and I haven't bought Paper Jam yet because I found Dream Team pretty disappointing.

I used to occasionally buy the Party and sports games, but not with any consistency. I haven't bought any in the last few years, though.

Overall, the Mario franchise is probably not the biggest reason I buy Nintendo systems, but it's up there.
