How often do you buy used game?

Rarely buy used games (it usually only happens when I find something rare, or really cheap). I only sell, or trade my games if they're fairly new. Passed that point I just tend to give them away to friends and family.

Pretty much only buy games at launch or over the net lately.

But if I'm in the store and the preowned copy is noticeably cheaper, I will buy it.

mostly only when a B2G1 free sale comes along.....other than that most games I get are Day 1 purchases. If not then I normally wait for a price drop and grab them new after that.

For current gen games, almost never. If I want an older game that is hard to find new, or way too expensive, then used. I hate buying used games because it seems like the people who sell games never take good care of them, at least in my area.

If movies were $60 a pop you bet your ass I'd be buying them used.

HBO shows D:

It's worth noting that I'm not adverse to netflix, though. And my game purchases are almost all from Steam sales. Books, though, are almost all new and generally really expensive. Books are a pain in the ass, but those more than the others I really want to get new and support authors and publishers.

i'd buy a nice used copy of a book most any day over new. why do i need some manufacturer to produce more crap when there's a perfectly good used book?

As far as books are concerned my thinking is that as down on their luck as the publishing industry as a whole is they could use the support. I mainly buy academic, literary theory type stuff, and as that's the field I'm moving towards my literally buying into it is slightly self serving.

The other thing is that I can't stand to have someone else's notes/underlinings in a text, and I've been burned too many times by "good" condition used books.

I used to almost never buy used games. But now I've started getting into it since I can get games for much cheaper.

Though I think 2 of my DS games were one of those GameStop scams...where they sell you used as new...>_>; (this was years ago...probably in like 2005)

Never.

The only game I remember buying used was Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and that was $20 with Cursed Mountain and both were p. much brand new.

Hah, in that case I just don't buy them. I love HBO original programming, but GOOD GOD, price gouging.

HBO needs it's own premium streaming service :(

Their ondemand offerings aren't too shabby--I always make sure to catch up on a bunch of stuff when I visit my folks since they have all sorts of premium cable goodness. They had something like 5 seasons of Sopranos on demand a few years ago that I burned through in the space of a week.

They will never flat out take a traded in game and sell it as new, but Employees can take home 'New' games to try them out, and the cases can get pretty worn on the shelves if they have been sitting there for a few years.

In contrast, while FYE kept the manuals and discs sealed in bags behind the counter, their boxes for PS2 games have been on display for like 6 years now, and are covered in stickers you can't take off and tons of wear. My god, those "This Box is empty!" stickers do not come off.

When I look forward to a game for a long time, I buy them new. Other games I missed or when I don't have money and waiting for price to go down = used.

Always new.

If its a game I'm looking forward to I need it on the first day. If not a day one purchase, cheapassgamer.com and living near a Fry's means I can get new copies for often cheaper than used.

For me, a big part of the experience is opening the shrinkwrap. I'm weird that way.

I used to buy used games a lot back in High School, since I didn't really have a job or anything. Now, I'll usually buy new but if there's a good deal, or the game is out of print, I'll buy it used in a heart beat. I recently bought Bioshock 2 used since it was going for $20.

Very rarely, since the prices come so fast down these days. A 69€ game goes down to 19€ in 3 months - there is really no need to buy used. :)

Very rarely. Something about the shops that do trade ins here in the UK don't seem to care how destroyed a disk is. Only really if it's something I'm not really convinced on getting, if I see it really cheap pre-owned I'll pick it up. (Heavenly Sword £5 for example!)

The last big game I bought new was Red Dead Redemption: I am willing to pay full price for games I think that are worth it. But I also bought a ps3 a few weeks back (used) and have since bought a load of its old exclusives pre-owned.

Stolen from comments section of a EuroGamer story ->

Some THQ guy: I don't think we really care whether used game buyers are upset because new game buyers get everything.

To which someone replied: He speaks as if they're two separate, mystical, warring sects. Many new game buyers are only in that position because they've traded in their old titles. To artificially fragment the market by speaking in these bilateral terms is naive and unnecessary.

Used to buy them a bunch. Now I wait for new games to get marked down or go on sale. Haven't bought a used game since.... 2008?

I'd say my current collection of stuff is half and half when it comes to the condition in which I purchased it. All my Gamecube games were purchased used because I never owned one, and when I got my Wii I set out to see what kick-ass software I was missing. Other than that, the only game I purchase used are out-of-print or Activision titles.

Hardly ever this gen. It isn't difficult to find games on sales these days; I can't recall spending $60 for any new PS3/360 game.

I've bought a few used PS2 and GCN games for $5 to $15 each at a local store. However, that kind of stopped with this generation. Lots of good sales and mark downs for me to buy them brand new. :)

I buy used when the game is out of print/rare/etc, I buy new otherwise usually, but usually because amazon new undercuts gamestops used often :lol

more and more. it's because i have little time to play the games on release date. so i'm constantly catching up.

last release game i bought was Red Dead Redemption.

after that i bought Bad Company 2, Demons' Souls and Splinter Cell Conviction (starting today).
All second hand...

Halo will be a relase game again.

Used to buy all my games new.

Hardly ever. I make an exception if it's a game that's not terribly important to me and even then I only do it if I can't tell if it's used or new (box needs to be mint too).

Oh, and Activision games.

Problem is HBO on demand in HD is available basically NOWHERE :( I would also like a system that preferably didn't involve having a subscription with a cable company.

This past year I've actually bought more new games than used, which is strange for me. That's largely been due to there being more games I've been excited for (Mass Effect 2, Bad Company 2, Red Dead Redemption, Alan Wake) or because a game was on sale (Yakuza 3). In general I usually buy used more than new. It's typically 65-35 used to new, I'd say.

Actually kinda surprised to see so little who buy used in this thread.

Anything out of print, anything I wasn't really interested in enough to buy at anywhere near full, new price, and anything where the used copy is less than half the new one.

Interestingly, a lot of my used purchases lead to new purchases within the series. Bought Jak & Daxter used, became a new customer of the series for life. Ditto on Kingdom Hearts, Etrian Odyssey and others. All series I buy on day one now, brand-new, that I would otherwise still be uninterested in if not for used.

Not all that often really, unless it's either something I have to buy preowned (i.e. retro games) or if the preowned version is much cheaper than the new one and is in great condition.

Most of my stuff is used, and the ones that aren't I bought for cheap during some promo or just waiting a bit after release.

I'm sorry but I can't afford buying games for 70€ day one when they drop to about half price less than two monts later (see FFXIII).

The last game I bought full price day one was Super Street Fighter IV and that's only because I'm a huge Street Fighter fan and it was only 30€.

9/10 i buy new. games fall in price so often here in the UK that there's very little point in buying preowned. However i trade in a lot of games and use the store credit to subsidise new games. iremember there was an interviw Reggie gave a long while back where he said somethingh like: "trade in some of your old games to get this new one". I bet Nintendo realise used games can help them in some ways.

I used to be a pc gamer so new was the only way, then I moved to just new with t he rare used find especially with my xbox. I didn't want a copy somebody abused. But I picked up a ps2 a while back and I have accumulated about 120 used games for it and maybe 60 used xbox360 games and my 10 ps3 games all used. I decided the 5 dollars off add up, and then the extra 5 with my power saver card add up also. I try and wait and not buy new releases now just help there also and wait till they hit $30 and get em used then. Occasionally I picked a new game, sadly yes I fuel gamestop. Only when online+shipping is the same or more though unless B2G1 free is running then I splurge.

I bought more of them used last gen then I have this gen.

But I've been predominantly a Wii gamer this gen, with a sprinkling of 360 awesome in between.

I only buy used if its a game ive sold in the past, like i rebought mag and bfbc2 again this month both used. I wont buy a game i want day one used.

Most of the time, since most of my purchases are unusual PS2 games or 'retro' games where sealed copies are in the realm of expensive collectors item.

When I do buy games from this generation they are always brand new however. New game prices crash so quickly here in the UK that within 6 months every game is available for way less than half it's original retail price. Most of the time it actually is cheaper to buy a new copy from an online store than it is to go into a local store and get a scruffy pre-owned copy.

I bought a used one from Gamefly this year. It was cheap, I wanted it, so I decided to keep it.

It was the second used game I've ever bought. The last one was maybe eight years ago.
