How often do you buy used game?

Same, OR if it's very expensive and used is "like new" condition. I bought Ninja Gaiden Black about 3 yrs ago because of this. Also the game was rare

To those who only buy games new and refuse to buy games used, is it because:

1. you don't like the fact that someone owned something before you
2. you only buy games that you plan on playing day one
3. you feel it is immoral to buy games used
4. other

Do you guys also sell old games? I sell on ebay practically every game and system the second I'm done with them, usually using the money earned for my next game purchase. Do the same thing when I upgrade PC parts too.

For me, if itÂ’s a game I have been really looking forward to I will get it day 1. If I am interested but donÂ’t want to pay full price I will wait till its in some sale as these days they can drop pretty quickly. If its something I want to try but donÂ’t want to spend a lot of money on or is an older title and very cheap used I will just get them used.

This thread makes me laugh how 99% of posts are “if its out of print or super rare, only then will I buy used”, I bet a lot are only saying this stuff to seem like some super supporter who doesn’t want to harm the industry :lol

1-2 are me, mostly 2... I plan out all of my purchases. The only games I sell are the ones that fell way below my expectations, or the ones I purchase against my better judgment (giving into GAF hype etc...) I don't do Ebay, so it's either I take the hit and trade in at GS, or sell it to a friend. Sometimes I just give crap games away to family.

These days i rarely buy used games. Importing new games from the UK is cheaper than buying used copies in Germany. Games i need on day one i still buy from Amazon Germany, but otherwise it's pretty all UK imports for me with the exception of some older games like Oblivion or Fallout where i want the German version. Bought both used.

How about cause used game prices are completely obscene? Buying used games usually involved some kind of decent bargain back in the days. I have a hard time finding last gen titles at a reasonable price.

With the exception of a handful of games, every single game that I own is used.

The few games that I purchase new, I usually sell.

5. Typically you can find a new copy online for cheaper.

Only games I buy new are the big Nintendo games like SMG2 or Call of Duty but I'm going to gamefly it this year instead.

Everything else I just use Gamefly. Rarely I will by used, for example a month ago I got Dead Rising off of eBay for $5 shipped, fuck Microsoft and its 'digital greatest hits' ripoff.

I buy a game used when I don't want any of the money to go to the dev or pub. It's happened a lot this gen.

Other than that it's always new regardless of cost.

My OCD prevents me from ordering from places like Gamestop online for used. From those type of online stores I will only buy new. GoHastings.com and other retailers who have a reputation for selling pristine items, I'll take a chance on a used game for the right price -- I gotta have the case and manual though... and the disc has to be in good condition.

Now if I walk into a GS store and can take a look at the case/manual/disc before buying, then I'll consider buying used.

I almost never buy anything new, unless the price is low enough to meet my "value point".
(This goes for used games too... but if a game still retails for $50 and I can get it in great condition used for $20 and I really want to play it? Done.)

I buy games on the Gamecube and Playstation 1 & 2 used, though I was buying PS2 games new all the way up until Accent Core Plus came out last year. I'm picky about condition, but some PS2 games are getting so cheap that I'm becoming more lenient as time goes by.

I buy about half of my Wii, PS3 and 360 games new. About half of those are immediately resold once I beat the game. If I buy a game used, I'm more apt to have picked a copy in near-mint shape and I usually hang on to it if I think it might have some replay value. I've held on to more games than I care to, and I've been thinning my collection of current-gen games quite a bit.

Digital downloads services like Steam are my primary source of games now, so despite the prevalence of piracy on the PC, I buy more games new on my PC than on my consoles.

Just wanted to ask a few small questions for the rest of GAF. How often do you buy used compared to new? Got any rough rules to which you buy? Where do you get most of your used games?

For me, I will only buy used if its at least 33% cheaper then a new copy, and there is a fair chance it will be in good shape. Used games tend to make up the bulk of my purchases for non-clearance games since I am also very cheap.

I would put about 50% of my current used collection being from Goozex, 30% from Gamestop, and the last 20% from Ebay, Amazon, and other miscellaneous sites.

Here are some rough counts of my New to Used Ratio by a few systems.

Of the 26 DS games in front of my, 13 were bought new and 13 are used, making a even 1:1 ratio.

For PS2, 9 out of the 19 games on my shelve are new.

For the 360, 15 out of my 21 games were bought new (I will also note that 14 of those new games were bought 4 days ago for about $55 combined, 4 taking up the bulk of it coming to $43)

A bit of my own surprise, 15 out of my 16 Wii games were bought new, the only used one is my imported copy of Captain Rainbow.

Of the 12 gamecube games, 2 were gotten new, 10 of them used.

Every Saturn and Dreamcast game I have were gotten used, and the bulk of PS1 and GBA games were gotten used as well.

So, how about the rest of you GAF?

I don't buy used games that often, I usually rent games that don't offer alot of replay value (15hrs or under) and buy games that I feel like have alot of replay value to them, I will buy a game used if it's alot less then buying it brand new (15$ off orginal price or more), but overall I don't buy game used that much.

Of the 11 games I've purchased this year, one was used (King's Field: The Ancient City, $4 a few weeks ago!). That pretty much typifies my behavior. If it's out of print or ridiculously cheap (and usually not something I would buy otherwise) I'll buy it used.

If I don't want to pay new prices for a game, generally it's not worth it to pay used prices for a game.

I don't buy used games however I do trade my used games for other people's used games quite often. Over half of my collection is used games that I've recieved from trading on various websites including GAF's buy/sell/trade thread.

Let me introduce you to my friend, she is awesome for helping me get cheap new games.

Between these 2 I can find pretty much all current gen games new for much lower prices then those used prices at Gamestop/whatever.

Only buy used if its out of print/impossible to fine. Hell I got Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne new for $30 when Atlus did a reprint not to long ago.

My breakdown is:

Full-retail: Only if I'm incredibly hyped and MUST have the game day 1.

Still new, but at discounted prices: Pretty much everything else.

Used: Only if I can't find the game new at a reasonable price compared to its used prices. I had to pick up a few used PS2 games this month, but luckily 2 out of 3 of them were near mint copies (I scoured ebay and half for "like new" copies). The other had a pretty good amount of light, cosmetic scratches all over the disc; nothing major, but I would've preferred something in near mint shape. I absolutely hate getting scratched up discs. I honestly don't understand how some people scratch up their discs so much. All of mine are basically flawless.

One thing is for certain, unless it is a game that I know I'll just want to play once and then get rid of, I'm never buying new from Gamestop. I ended up returning some used games I bought from them because the discs looked like someone took steel wool to them. It was ridiculous.

I can find new copies cheaper than what is sold used here in Germany.

I've only bought a used game once, and that's because Gamestop didn't have a new copy and I didn't want to wait to order it online.

I honestly can't remember the last time I bought a used game. 95% of the games I buy at this stage of the gen are the games I want in my "collection," otherwise I'm renting. And like a bunch of folks have already said, if you wait long enough you can get new games at "used" prices anyway. Just scooped Condemned for $14 new off Amazon, for instance. I'm not in the habit of waiting years to get a game, but you get the idea.

Practically never, outside of old PC, PS1, and DC games, stuff like that. I picked up 3 games for the DS during Gamestop's last b2g1 sale, but before that I can't even remember the last time I bought a game used. Likely just over 2 years ago.

Now I pretty much buy only new stuff and even then really only when it's on sale. It's pretty rare for me to buy anything full price.

I usually only buy used if it's absurdly cheap (like $5.00 for early-gen or last gen games) that are hard to find elsewhere, and by "hard" I mean "it's not on the shelf in the store I'm standing in right now".

For more current stuff, I usually prefer going for bomba-priced new games. You can't beat finding something awesome that you never got around to purchasing hidden amongst the garbage that generally makes up the Walmart bargain section for just $10, all factory sealed and shiny.

Certain games I know will never go down in price (stupid Nintendo games) or I suspect may be harder to find down the road (stupid Atlus games) will get full asking price new.

The thing is, there's not enough of a price difference between recent release new/used games (so I never, ever do that), and there's usually not much price difference between picking up an older game at bomba pricing and buying it used.

Day 1 DLC, special editions and pre-order junk mean nothing to me either way.

All the time, especially if it's a SP-only game too.

The only games I buy new are games I'm extremely hyped for and will play Day 1. For example, the new games I bought/will buy this year are:

  • GoW3
  • Halo REACH
  • NCAA Football 11
  • SUPER SFIV

Everything else is either bought used or when it goes on sale. I also trade-in games all the time.

Also, people going with the "Only 10% Cheaper" line are missing the point, IMO. Sure, 10% isn't much in the short term, but it certainly adds up over the long term.

I always buy new if I can (almost always day one, sometimes at a good price if there's a deal). I only buy used for out-of-print games (most often eBay). Hate buying things new, but if an unopened copy of some old game sells for $100 and the used ones
with the black label, none of that Greatest Hits crap
go for $20, then I'll save my $80.

Also, I only buy from GameStop when the pre-order bonuses are better than the others, or if it's the only place offering it. Otherwise, it's Amazon.

Occasionally, especially when I'm not sure if I'll like a game or not and usually when it's been out for a while.

I will however always, ALWAYS buy good DLC for a game I bought used.

To me, Gamestop typically charges 5 bucks less for a used game vs. new copy. That just doesn't make good sense to a cheapskate like me.

So, I rely on sites like CAG and Amazon where I can usually beat GS's used prices and get new games.

Also, Ben's Bargains (www.bensbargains.net) is a good source for finding deals.

Since the days of UK bargains, I buy far more (new) games than ever before. The magical 18GBP mark results in an instant buy, if I'm interested enough of course.

There are only few games I (will) buy on day one, like Yakuza 3, Demon's Souls, GT5 and The Last Guardian. This is mostly due to me lagging between 6 months and one year behind the newest videogame releases and I don't want to raise my backlog further.

I only buy high profile games like Uncharted 2, Dirt2 and maybe soon BFBC2 and Heavy Rain used, because the prices don't fall as fast as say Bayonetta. When I buy a used game, it has to be in almost new condition.

Before the cheap UK opportunities, I almost never bought new games, because here in Switzerland they sell for 100$ a piece. So used games for around 50$ were a steal.

I buy used games if they're $10 cheaper than new copies, or if new copies aren't available. However, I always check HMV (sometimes two of them) and Future Shop before I even try EB Games or Gamestop.

I have bought one used game. It was Ico and it was before it was rereleased so I couldn't find a new copy. :/

Practically Never.

I normally plan my game purchases, and as someone already said, i mostly buy them new because:

Amazon has made the huge difference in my game buying habits. When the Christmas period approaches, when its almost impossible to buy all the games you want, you simply wait a couple of months after their release and it is really easy to find those games at really good prices on Amazon.

Occasionally.

If I have the choice and buying new only costs me an extra $5 or so, then I buy new. But sometimes a new game will be $20 or more than the used version, and in that case I will buy used. Or if I can only find a used copy of a game then I'll buy used. I have about 4 used games out of 20 so it's not many, but since this isn't a charity I have no guilt over buying a game used. Whatever works best for ME is what I'll do.

Absolutely never. I believe in supporting the developers, and choose to do so with each purchase.

Heck, I had Fallout 3 on indefinite loan, and liked it enough that I bought it last week even though I didn't need to; I thought a game that good deserved (new) purchase.

I buy used all the time, provided I can get a copy that's in very good to near mint condition. I'm very picky about the packaging.

But most of the games I buy used are older titles, not recently released. I buy new releases as well. But if I can buy a game for a lower price used or un-used, I do it. I feel no remorse for that. Sorry, developers. My gaming dollar is limited, if I can save money I do it.

Very rarely. Only if I can't find it new and/or it's significantly cheaper than a new copy. Thanks to Amazon consistently giving me $20 credit for the games I'm interested in, buying new is actually cheaper.

If new copies are all Greatest Hits, then I try to find a mint used copy of the original edition at eBay, Amazon, or GameStop. They really need to denote Greatest Hits status on the shrinkwrap. The packaging turns a lot of people off.

goozex for me!

I buy original games on steam, starcraft and will get halo reach this year. I think the games industry probably got 2-300 euros out of me this year already.
