How Sony can easily power-up the Plus service

Wasn't Sony supposed to have some sort of announcement this month about how they plan to improve PS+?

Right now it really seems sony has no system in place for publishing PS1 games. Maybe focus tests showed people will try out and finish Ps2 games but never PS1.

As in, where are the authentication servers? I would imagine these are spread all over the Earth.

Right, so Sony runs Vue, Now, Store, Music, Video and others. So they have to be spread out across the country in several mega data centers right? The idea that the hardware is out of date is funny to me. So, what is out of date? Technically, everything. Anyways, server farms usually go through server migration to newer hardware all the time, probably every 3-5 years? So the problems people have or perceive with PSN should not be solely hardware related.

It is most like a combination of VM, database, connection between data centers and ISPs right? I don't know what their setup is but it is not as simple as upgrade hardware and software have a nice day.

Improve PS+ by either providing discounts for Now, Vue, Music and Video; implement rewards system outside of Sony Rewards or tie them together.

The only way to get that Sony back is to ensure the PS5 flops hard and throw all of our money behind Nintendo and Microsoft.
Only then will desperate Sony come back and give us a worthwhile Plus service, the ability to change our PSN account names, robust backwards compatibility and Vita 2.

Until then they could give a rat's ass about what we want.

Desprate Sony gave you all of that y'all took it for granted then and now are taking it for granted again. The only thing that was not created by desperate Sony was PSN account name changes.

And if Black Ops 2 is remastered it will dominate all charts lol. This isn't a barometer for anything other than a popular COD game

What would powering up the Plus service mean?

If it means increasing Sony's profits from it, just get rid of the free monthly games entirely. People sub to play online so there won't be many unsubbing. I'm going to make a guess that most people don't even know that there are free monthly games.

Am I reading the OP right? They want to replace some of the PS+ games with PS1/2 games?

I don't think that really 'powers up' the PS+ program. Sure, I wouldn't mind it, but... early on we used to get older games in PS+ and people complained. People, in general, seem to want recent stuff.

These are all great things and all but it's a pipe dream. Until Sony is forced to change they won't.

Meh. That's such a meaningless statement. They came up with the PS+ program in the first place. That was change. They've evolved it over the years, from the 'instant game collection' to a fixed '6 games per month'. That is change. They developed PSNow. That was change. They designed the Move and a solid consumer grade VR system. Etc. Sure, if you dismiss all the things they do and don't count them, they never change. But that's a silly way to figure it.

Working PS Support, we get a few calls a week where people rant down the phone about how we are "scamming" them by making you pay to play online, and why it isn't free, yada yada yada. The typical stuff you get in internet arguments with no nuance. They never give suggestions on how to improve it, just non-stop tears about having to pay a sub fee.

Also, I can tell you that the majority of accounts I deal with don't actually download the PS+ games, at all. Its quite rare to see someone grabbing every single game, which is super surprising to me as they're just fucking there for the taking, even if you don't like them. Probably the most ubiquitous one from June's lot is Killing Floor 2, but that's likely down to the rooty tooty point and shooty of it all.

No idea how you could really "improve" PS Plus at all, in my book. I can't think of anything that would actually make me subscribe at all.

I remember when I got a PS3 I made it a mission to get a 60GB original for PS2 backwards compatibility then ended up playing no PS2 games on it. Now though I wouldn't mind some BC. I do think however that a graet deal of games have seen remasters and remakes over the years that PS1 BC would be almost pointless for me. I'm kind of thankfull for those remakes/remasters to be honest. I say almost because there still might be a very slim chance that one day I may feel like playing some obscure PS1 game.

It sucks because they won't make Plus more interesting and rich. So we are stuck with what we got, and it make it worse it's the same Plus we have always had except now it's more expensive.

no, you're not stuck with it, you can always opt out. If enough people would do that, Sony would be forced to offer better terms.

The free games and discounts are probably the only things worth paying for.

PSNs download speeds and lack of name changes are infuriating. Most of the improvements that should be made are adding functions that are free on other services.

Give us PSP/PSVita digital and PSP, PS1 and PS2 classics on a subscription service. Improve Shareplay for co-op gameplay.

TBQH, the hope for PSP games on PS3 and PS4 is one of the main reasons I bought the systems so early. I always dreamed Sony would go "Oh, and we're going to just dump our PSP titles on PSN for PS3 and PS4" at E3, because PSP is one of the best platforms ever and theres a wealth of titles that deserve to be officially playable again.

Most of the PS1/PS2 games worth playing are not Sony published games.

In which case, just like with their efforts to get those titles on PS3 last gen, it would imply a monumental task to overcome all of the different licensing issues for each title in the different regions.

From Sony's perspective, the question is "how much value would it provide the consumer?" and following on from that, "how much value would it in turn provide Playstation?"

It's perhaps something they're constantly evaluating. It's not something they would be able to achieve overnight, even if the corporate will to do it was there. So if they don't announce anything as regards this in the next 12 months, just assume that Sony have made a value judgement on it and decided it's not in their corporate interest to pursue this, as they don't think it would drive PS+ subs.

Note:
One other thing to note is that PSNow is I believe intended to provide the kind of backwards compatibility functionality you speak of in the OP. I'm not sure if it already supports PS1 and PS2 games alongside PS3 games, but I can totally see the mere fact of this service's continued support within Sony being a factor against a separate BC initiative. You have to imagine that Sony would much rather pursue the inevitable per game licensing negotiations to get PS1/PS2 content locked-in on this service, rather than pursue this twice for two separate services on the same platform... It would be an inefficient waste of company bandwidth, that would be better spent promoting their existing PSNow service with the additional PS1/2 content.

Well, I mean, depending on how much you buy the discounts can actually easily pay for the entire year. And depending on how much you like the ps+ games, they can also pay for the entire year.... I save well over the money I pay for ps+ [I wouldn't buy every game, but I save $5 here, $10 there on the free games and that adds up quick].

Every once in awhile I have slow dl speeds but generally mine are fine. Nothing I'd be 'infuriated' about. I wouldn't get infuriated with someone else if I picked a name I hated, either. I might wish I could change it, sure, but any fury would be aimed squarely at the younger self who picked a terrible name [in other words... no fury at all]. And besides, name changing has nothing to do with PS+ in the first place. Even if you don't have ps+, you can't change your name.

At this point I'd be thrilled if we got 1 AAA game (not expecting anything released in last 18-ish months), 1 indie game and 1 PS1/PS2 on PS4 game each month. Never going to happen, but it'd be amazing
