How to use Reddit?

So admittedly, I have only been a member of Reddit for a little over a year, and before then just been lurking around. One thing is, that the design has always scared me away, as I have been overwhelmed with information, and even more options as a member. Just today, I found out about subscriptions of Subreddits, and that I can cancel them, which have made me clean up in my list of subreddits to make it all more clean.

But which subreddits are you guys using? And which ones are worth following? Currently I have only subscribed to Plex, and I don't even know if it is worth it with the community over there. Are there any subreddits with quality discussion and not just spamming?

And which app are you using for your smartphone device to keep up with your subreddits? Any easy ones.

I really just wonder, how I can use Reddit most effectively, as something I have besides NeoGAF, as this will always remains my place for everything.

Ignore the huge subreddits, look for subreddits focused around specific stuff you're interested in.

Also the porn subs are pretty good.

i use relay pro on my android phone and alien blue on my ipad. i really only browse reddit on my phone because i find the desktop site to be a mess. im subscribed to /r/games, /r/gaming, /r/globaloffensive, /r/destinythegame, /r/gamedeals, /r/grandtheftautoV, /r/ps4, /r/pcgaming, /r/apple and /r/android. Im also subscribed to /r/cringe, /r/cringepics and /r/titlegore when i need some laughs

I agree. Avoid all the humor subreddits like pics, videos, WTF, etc. For example, I use the Personal Finance subreddit. I have gotten some amazing feedback in terms of finance from there. Best thing to do is go to google, pick a topic you might be interested in, type in it the search and put reddit after it. If there's a subreddit for it, then it will pop up. Then look at see what kind of topics are floating around the subreddit.

I really don't know what to subscribe to though. I found FIFA and Plex.

Thanks for these suggestions! I'll give Relay Pro a go.

Honestly, just start an account and start subscribing to whatever interests you. It'll take a bit of time to weed out subreddits that are about a cool topic, but have toxic communities. Then start exploring smaller communities that have tangential relations to what you're already subscribed to. Look around /r/all once in awhile for exposure to new stuff, and keep a tab on Trending Subreddits for new fad stuff that pops up.

Also once you get an account, immediately unsub from /r/worldnews, /r/Music, and /r/Politics.

Basically unreadable.

I don't understand why all forums just don't use the GAF template.

It is perfection.

But I guess it is an initial hurdle kind of thing. If I bothered to read it more I guess I would become more proficient. So my advice, just tough it out.

I use the reddit enhancement suit (RES) and add shortcuts.

They do completely different things. I wouldn't talk about politics or any social stuff on reddit because the upvote system is very toxic but i learned a lot of stuff in r/bodyweightfitness for example. If i were to ask fitness questions here nevermind that not the whole community is dedicated to that kind of fitness (fitgaf is mostly lifters), an obscure question could be easily drown out people talking about unrelated stuff and the people who could help me could possibly never see the post.

You can dislike 95% of Reddit and still have it be one of your most used sites.

I use it for individual game subreddits (Destiny, Hearthstone, etc.), franchises (ASoIaF, Marvel ), hobbies (Sports, Art stuff), and so on. It's very convenient to have one account for so many active forums, a neogaf thread doesn't always suffice. I don't remember specifically off the top of my head, but there are sites dedicated to sorting subreddits to look through some popular ones that might be of interest.

Some of my favorite subreddits

/r/youtubehaiku
/r/startledcats
/r/mathrock
/r/listentothis
/r/brokengifs
/r/blackpeopletwitter

If you're looking for something interesting once you've been browsing enough reddit try out /r/subreddit simulator which is fully explained on the subreddit itself. Basically the entire subreddit and comments are run by bots that take the most common used words from different subreddits and try to make their own content.

Yeah, it's pretty simple. Subscribe to what you like and unsubscribe from what you don't like. I tend to use reddit a little differently. My subscriptions are somewhat random. They're subreddits I rarely visit, but would like to see posts from like the monogame subreddit. I take a quick look at my front page before going to r/all or looking at specific subreddits.

Since the CS community on GAF is small I use r/GlobalOffensive, that's the main reason I use reddit but there's other stuff I use it for. Since Reflex isn't really that popular of a game, r/Reflex is pretty much the only place to get anything from.

What's worth subbing to? Shit you like. The site is awfully designed but it's actually pretty useful. As always, just don't read comments. Any comment worth reading (as in something posted by a dev) usually gets a new post anyway.

Go to shower thoughts, say something obvious, reap the gold.

Also, I heard a rumor that Reddit Gold and GAF gold is interchangeable, but I am too poor to try =(.

Just think of things you like and go find the subreddits for them.

For instance I am subscribed to Star Wars, Doctor Who, Metal Gear Solid, Movies, things like that.

Unsubscribe from every default sub-reddit. Pick out a few subjects you like. Search them out. The heavily moderated, subject specific sub-reddits are among the best content on the internet.

This. For example I am subscribed to porn, mayonnaise, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, earwigs (it seemed interesting), and bicycles.

Reddit is great place really, just don't stick with the big subreddit groups and try to find the things the interest you most.

Lots of good content in reddit, specially on the smaller subreddits. Choose communities based on your interests.

Ignore the idiots here telling you to avoid reddit.

Reddit is a huge user content driven site so it has a ton of awesome and bad shit at the same time. The bad shit tends to exist on the large default subreddits and dedicated ones like racist/sexist/homophobic stuff. Good news is you can avoid that in its entirety and you'll not come into contact with it - reddit does pretty good in that regard where you can easily curate. To make use of reddit, visit subreddits of your interest by subscribing to them, if you just subscribe to your interests then that's all you're see on your homepage/frontpage.

For example, my favourite subreddits are /r/space, /r/astronomy, /r/historyporn, /r/askhistorians and /r/gamedev. They cover my main general interests and there is amazing content on them, historyporn has tons of history pics - even stuff submitted from personal redditors like what they parents/grandparents may have had. Remember the neogaf history photo thread? Well it's a subreddit dedicated to that. There's a subreddit for every interest whether popular or niche (and I'm talking niche to things like a subreddit dedicated to videos of train derailing). /r/artisanvideos is good too, cool stuff you can learn about there. I love some of my gaming subreddits where OTs don't exist on the same level on GAF, like the /r/EVE subreddit (EVE Online), /r/KerbalSpaceProgram, etc.

Also it has a ton of good porn subreddits. Also the "SFW Porn Network" is amazing too, it's basically a network of subreddits dedicated to stuff like historyporn, earthporn, engineeringporn, you name it.

Basically if you have an interest, look if it has a subreddit and that's all there is to it. You can then see its popular posts along with other subreddits you're subscribed to show up on your frontpage/home (the default reddit.com you visit), and you can go to specific subreddits from there as well. I highly recommend you install the reddit enhancement suite plugin for firefox/chrome, it enables you to customize the top bar with specific subreddits as easy shortcuts as one of its features.

I don't post on reddit, but I read it somewhat often. What I like about reddit is there are thriving communities for very specific subjects. Most of what you're interested in can be found there.

There's also a lot of games (mostly MMOs and MOBAs) that GAF doesn't have much of a community for. Most of the threads for games like ESO, SWTOR, Smite, etc are slow/dead. While reddit is very active.

I mean how can you possibly ever want a more helpful and supportive community website than NeoGaf? With replies like this I think you can see you don't need one.

x2.

Anyway:

Unsubscribe from the default subreddits.

Subscribe to the NSFW subreddits.

Done.

Same with Tumblr.

This is a shockingly good subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/unresolvedmysteries

Missing people, John/Jane Does, murderers and rapists who haven't been caught, and the occasional post on paranormal phenomena (usually considered from a skeptical perspective -- check out the comments in this post for an example:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Unresolved..._july_1954_a_man_arrives_at_tokyo_airport_in/). The discussion is very civil, there aren't many crazies, and occasionally experts come in to do AMAs (for instance, the former police chief during the Jon Benet Ramsay case did an AMA... then went back and deleted his account and responses a week or so later when the media picked up on it...).

Do you have interests? Search for subreddits for them and start browsing and interacting. Each has their own unique community. Add some default subreddits for extra content. Just browse, post, chat, etc. It's basically an elaborate discussion forum.

I have various IT-related SR's for my interests, like healthit and powershell. I like film and particulars genres, so I browse film and ghibli and others. For reading it's asoif, readyplayerone, lovecraft, and others. For fun I like silly shit like firstworldanarchists and cleganebowl.

Just poke around and find shit you like.

Gaf has ruined me for the crappy threaded layout of Reddit topics. I generally just wait for people to link me to a thread on Reddit and read it too to bottom
