How to use Reddit?

Reddit always confuses the shit out of me. It's like a list of threads that just link to an image an im like what da fuq im so old oh god everything is terrible. minecraft, instagram, cereal, myspace what are kids doing these days. damn clouds.

Honestly it amazes me that the people who struggle to use Reddit because of the layout manage to get dressed everyday.

Most of the posts in this thread are straight up confirmation bias

"Oh, all the posts in r/circlejerk are fucking stupid, what's the point of reddit"

No, all the default subreddits have pretty terrible things constantly said in them. Its not just in /r/circlejerk

What are you interested in? Like fishing? Subscribe to r/fishing. Looking for gaming stuff but want the discussions to be more similar to NeoGAF? Subscribe to r/games.

Whenever there is a topic I am interested in, I will google reddit + what I am looking for to see if a popular subreddit comes up.

Do people who can't use reddit browse 4chan? Because that site layout is completely incomprehensible to me.

Yeah 4Chan is baffling to me. Don't see why people say reddit is unreadable when 4Chan actually is.

/r/redditfox is awesome for seeing stuff that's going to hit the front page before it does. Actually fascinating as it shows the inherent biases of the reddit community.

Meta subs are great as well: /r/subredditdrama, /r/circlejerk, /r/circlebroke. I also like the sports communities.

The sports communities are usually good, especially the baseball one. Subscribe to the subreddits of the professional teams you follow, they usually have good discussion threads for each game.

If you play any popular games (Dota 2, LOL, WoW, CSGO, Smash Bros., Destiny, etc), then subscribe to that subreddit. I really like the CSGO and Smash Bros subreddits.

*Goes to subscribe to The Vampire Diaries subreddit*

Only 2 topics. :(

I have never entered 4chan. But it seems like I can get something useful out of Reddit.

Step 1: Search for a sub-reddit on whatever topic you wish.

Step 2: Find it, because there's a sub for everything.

Step 3: Marvel at the convenience and simplicity of finding an active and supportive community for even the nichest of subjects.

Yes, you can make a thread and have a constructive conversation about something instead of having it turn into a thread about counting the ways something sucks. Yes, that shocked me too.

I'd like to know too.

Whats the difference between a reddit and a subreddit?

reddit is the website.

www.reddit.com/r/spacedick--s

is an interesting community based around the retelling of pranks astronauts do to each other while on space missions.

the /r/ indicates a subreddit. and it's like a mini website dedicated to a specific subject.

your first step in using reddit is to completely ignore half the shit on there, and subscribe to stuff that interests you. It's an amazing site, backed up by a bullshit comment system that sort of ruins the community due to karma whoring. It makes the entire community seem like a pack of assholes, but the information in specific subreddits is outstanding.

edit: I was making a funny link joke. but I'm not actually sure how horrifying spacedicks really is, therefore I broke the link :S

These are mine.

Games is good for gaming related news stories.

Gaming is good for just silly shit related to games.

Woahdude has a lot of cool pictures and videos.

ArtefactPorn has a lot of cool artefact pictures.

Art has, well, art.

You just gotta think of stuff that interests you and that you'd like to follow. Is there a game you play a lot? Probably a good idea to subscribe to their subreddit if you do.

Unsubscribe from the default subs, except maybe AskReddit and NotTheOnion. Because of their popularity, such subs tend to attract white supremacist and MRA recruiters, even getting their submissions to the front of the page. And even most of the non-bigoted material from those subs is mediocre.

Install Reddit Enhancement Suite. Unsubscribe from crappy sub-reddits. Subscribe in good subreddits. Don't browse the comments in topics that might be volatile.

http://redditp.com/ is nice if you just want to look at images

Any recommendation for an Android app? Or just use m.reddit.com?
Relay for Reddit

It has the main feature which makes Reddit enjoyable to me: it allows me to browse r/all while filtering out certain subreddits (usually r/pics, r/funny, r/AdviceAnimals, etc.). That way, you see ALL the interesting topics that pop up while getting rid of many of the reposts and meme-y stuff.

The alternative (as offered by any other app) is to only subscribe to certain subreddits, but then you miss out on the great stuff that you didn't know existed, which kinda ruins the point.

Overall, I don't like Reddit. That said there are a couple of subreddits I do like (/science, /philosophy, /neurophilosophy and some others) where the quality of discussion is far beyond what you'll get on this board. I'm sure there's some other good stuff there, but I don't really care enough to look through it.

Make list of personal interests.
Look up related subreddits.
Done.

That's all. Reddit isn't magic, you just look into the parts that complement your interests.

Ignore the huge subreddits, look for subreddits focused around specific stuff you're interested in.

This + RES.

I subscribe to the sub for my city, a bunch about food/cooking, music related, travel, and a bunch of others revolving about my interests. Sure, there's all kinds of things wrong with reddit but there's also a bunch of great stuff on there.

So admittedly, I have only been a member of Reddit for a little over a year, and before then just been lurking around. One thing is, that the design has always scared me away, as I have been overwhelmed with information, and even more options as a member. Just today, I found out about subscriptions of Subreddits, and that I can cancel them, which have made me clean up in my list of subreddits to make it all more clean.

But which subreddits are you guys using? And which ones are worth following? Currently I have only subscribed to Plex, and I don't even know if it is worth it with the community over there. Are there any subreddits with quality discussion and not just spamming?

And which app are you using for your smartphone device to keep up with your subreddits? Any easy ones.

I really just wonder, how I can use Reddit most effectively, as something I have besides NeoGAF, as this will always remains my place for everything.

I'd like to know too.

Whats the difference between a reddit and a subreddit?

Subreddits

A subreddit is a community/forum about a single topic. For example:

Subreddits can be general or specific. So for example, if you're a Lakers fan, you could visit any or all of the following subreddits:

Think of any topic you're interested in and there will be a subreddit for it. A new game was announced? Its subreddit will probably be its most active community simply due to the fact that it's easy for a subreddit to be created.

Each subreddit is located at reddit.com/r/________. The "r" is for reddit.

You can see how popular each subreddit is by the first number near the top of the right sidebar. For example, /r/explainlikeimfive has 6,354,384 subscribers.

Subscribing

The front page of https://www.reddit.com/ is like a feed of all your subscribed subreddits. Subscribing to a subreddit adds it to your feed and adds a shortcut link to the thin bar at the top.

By default, Reddit subscribes you to a bunch of default subreddits such as todayilearned, askscience, funny, movies, etc.

If you're not logged in, the front page will be these default subreddits. Everyone who's not logged in sees the same content.

If you are logged in, and you have subscribed to other subreddits or unsubscribed to some of the default ones, then your front page will be different than other people's.

Note that you don't have to subscribe to a subreddit to view its content. You can simply just go to the subreddit directly.

How does the Content Work?

Reddit uses an algorithm that pushes new or highly voted submissions up to the top. As time passes, the strength of each submission (even highly voted ones) decays, and it continues falling down the page until it's completely overtaken by newer content. This keeps things fresh. So as an example every day you'll see new stuff in each subreddit, and maybe the highest posts from yesterday on page 3.

Reddit Enhancement Suite

http://www.redditenhancementsuite.com/

Once you get more familiar with how Reddit works, I recommend everyone install this browser extension, which improves the Reddit experience and interface. It's extremely popular and everyone uses it. One of my favorite features is you can add shortcut links to the top bar without having to actually subscribe to the subreddit or log in. It also has endless paging, and you can open images inline, etc.

I love it use it 3 times a day no so much for posting on engaging with the community because that is what GAF is for but few quick news, fun, what is going on in the internet etc.

Total agree
Some of my subscription
R/funny
R/gifs
R/gonemild
R/explainit likeimfive
R/todayilearned

The r/gif sub is awesome, I wish Neogaf would support gifv format already!!

Discussion on the huge subreddits becomes super stupid and confusing at times when there are like 5 different discussions going on under every comment.

But reddit is fantastic for very particular and niche interests. Basically unsub from all of the default subreddits that you don't care about and find one that interests you. There is bound to be a handful that you really like.

Me personally I use it for book related interests. The reddit community in that area is amazing.

Ignore the huge subreddits, look for subreddits focused around specific stuff you're interested in.

Also the porn subs are pretty good.
Porn subs? Like, which ones specifically?

I love r/todayilearned. I usually go through these while I am at work and have nothing to do.

Avoid anything involving gaming. It's a cesspool.

Why so? Since I primarily use my Xbox One vs my PS4, I find the /r/xboxone subreddit very helpful. The sidebar menu gives pretty much all the information I need when it comes to gaming on Xbox that includes:

Released and Upcoming Games
Common Issues
Xbox Support on reddit
Games with Gold
Frequently Asked Questions
IRC Chat
Previous Developer AMAs

I love the gaming section here on GAF and it is primarily why I joined, but if you're not looking in the OT, discussion can quickly get derailed.

Yea and I bet they are also saying how Ryse is really a 90/100 MC game and how much better it is than Bloodborne.

Any gaming subreddit is just a haven for delusional fanboys.

I like subbing to local city subreddits. It's a good place to find local happenings. Even if you are traveling searching a local subreddit will sometimes net you good recommendations for local food and stuff to do.

Woah, I must have subscribed to the wrong subreddit then. I am using be search engine on the site itself though. Google is better? I use Google for NeoGAF already.

Don't waste your time on the built in search engine, its a piece of shit.

Any gaming subreddit is just a haven for delusional fanboys.

He says on NeoGAF.

There are delusional fanboys everywhere. You take the good with the bad and roll with it. I enjoy GAF for opinions on gaming subjects from all positions with the possibility of things turning negative with arguments, drive-by posts, troll posts, etc. Sometimes it is better to gain information about a topic from individuals where, you can assuredly bet, that they have the same game and system as me rather than opinions from someone who does not.

It doesn't always have to translate into fanboyism. There was as much uproar in that subreddit over MCC as there was on GAF.

Unsubscribe immediately to the crap that's there by default, and subscribe to subreddits based on your interests or how interesting some of them can be. For example, some of mine are History, Irish History, Retro Battlestations, Ireland, Hurling and so on.
