How would you deal with matchmaking the top 0.4% of elite players (Apex Predators)

Should the elite only be matched against elite and wait for full lobbies? Should unbalanced teams be introduced or should a Predator take 2/3 slots on a MM team?

Apex Legends players are turning to mob justice to resolve their matchmaking woes in the battle royale game. The Apex Legends Season 14 release has proven very successful so far, with the new update pushing the game to a new Steam concurrent player record. However, many players have recently expressed dissatisfaction with the matchmaking system in the ranked mode for the FPS game.

One of the most highly upvoted posts on the Apex Legends subreddit at the time of writing is the latest in a series of rants from players at lower ranks who say they are fed up of dealing with Masters and Apex Predator rank players appearing in their lobbies. Another popular post urges developer Respawn to “stop worrying about matchmaking times,” claiming that players would rather sit in queue for a little longer than end up in matches with players of vastly differing skill levels.

Now, it appears that the community has taken matters into their own hands. A viral clip shows a huge group of rival players seemingly teaming up with their enemies to eliminate a Predator rank player in their lobby. Inqo, the player in question – who goes by datemike97 on Reddit – posted a short video of them dropping at the start of a round only to realise that a huge number of players are trailing behind them in pursuit.

Season is currently 14 but latest data (season 13) taken from: https://www.esportstales.com/apex-legends/rank-distribution-and-percentage-of-players-by-tier

Hahahaha.
I know its annoying for the player but that video is amazing.

The community always finds balance.
A player who is vastly more skilled than everyone else in the lobby will probably ruin the match for most players, might as well group up and hunt them down.

I think that the expectation of separating people by skill is the problem here. If people manage to identify high skill players and gang up on them that's also fine. The high skill person is being challenged and it makes interesting content for viewers.

That dogpiling is funny and actually what Apex Predators should expect when they queue public lobbies - Respawn should encourage it and give additional visual cues which teams are Master and above.

Alternatively, get rid of SBMM. The fair way to matchmake casual games is fully random.

edit: P.S. I would actually like it in Battle Royales if groups could find alliances mid-match until the end zone. Most BRs are missing the social component.

For BR games, alert the lobby. Reward the lower ranks for successfully hunting them down while providing a new challenge to the elites (having to take on the entire lobby 1vAll).
