Is there a nuclear plant located over there?

Hopes no one is hurt or killed.

Nah those aren't built here because of possible earthquakes causing a meltdown.

Just read on a local newspaper site that a tank full of jet fuel is very close to exploding. The flames are also growing in size.

Will go to sleep, I have to say that the image of a HUGE smoke tower with an orange backdrop is definitely one of the most daunting things I've ever seen.

Off topic, but ...love the irony or coincidence..
3 days ago I got a new TV, but forgot to buy HDMI cables...and I don't want to pay $20 for them, so I went to eBay and bought one for $3, with the promise that they ship fast...so I've been the rest of the week, basically expecting the weekend to come because: 1. Is one of the few/rare weekends I'm off from work (usually work Saturdays also) and 2. Expecting the cables by Saturday, to play PS3 and finally finish uncharted 2 (plus test the PS3 for the first time at 1080p)....

Well, back to the cable...they do ship fast...just checked now the tracking number and the package was received in Puerto Rico today and processed just a few hours ago......in Cataño (around the place of the incident). :lol

Anyway, yeah..everyone's worried about the "jet fuel tank" being so close and expect that if it explodes the explosion could be bigger than the one from nearly 24 hours ago...so let's hope everything's fine. My (only) 2..and old-ass friends (for over 15 years) ironically are in there. One is a firefighter and was called just a few hours ago to report there...the other lives relatively close to the place of the incident (this one called me the very moment of the explosion yesterday, thinking something bad happened. We were talking on MSN, but I went off to play some PSP..at that moment, so he thought the worst.. :p )

Whoa. My friend on facebook just posted pictures of damage at my high school on ft. Buchanan. Fuck.

This is seriously bullshit that the media doesn't care. It really does seem like there are only 10 or so states the national media give any shit about.

Where are you going?

holy shit. My middle school and high school Is right where that cluster of buildings is south of the refinary.

Where is the "no press coverage" angle coming from? A quick Google news search for "Caribbean Gulf Petroleum" brings up a ton of results, some from the BBC and CNN. How much coverage is an explosion supposed to garner?

Scroll through the thread, it took around 6 hours for an AP wire story to appear.

Go to cnn.com

And its not just "something explodes" its that the fire is ongoing, there are evacuations, there may be further explosions and the cause might be criminal.

The BBC at least has something written up
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8323569.stm

But they didnt report on it until long after it was "news"

But how many of those are breaking stories like an explosion story would have been? "There has been an explosion and we don't know what's up" doesn't seem like a story that demands news outlets to fire-up the troops. It's visually spectacular, but why is this explosion a pressing news story of global interest?

If anything, I'm glad we avoided the talking heads talking about possible airplanes that might have crashed and unknown death-tolls and eye witness reports of burnt bodies and UFOs.

Usually the cnn website runs a "breaking news" thing when something like an explosion happens. They did not. Usually the scrolling bar on TV says something. It did not.

"Large explosion reported at Puerto Rican oil refinery" for a start. Id expect a story with facts soon after.

There was nothing.

How many hours of television time are devoted to every wildfire that pops up near LA?

Ive seen "45 houses are under mandatory evacuation".

How is that news?

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the US but my goodness you have to take into consideration its a country very for from the mainland. Its not like its another state in the US so to be so focused on why there was not quicker coverage 2AM in the morning or the fact its not getting as much attention as say a California wild fire is kind of silly. Some it seems want more screaming headlines with scores dead and missing to make this story bigger than what it is. Get a grip.

I'm hard pressed to find some scrolling text worth worrying about, but (more to the point) I'm not sure how realistic it is for CNN/BBC to get useful coverage from PR at that hour. Do you happen to know how long it was after the explosion that PR's local news got cameras and reporters to the scene and had them saying something that went beyond scattered eye witness accounts?

As for the bit I quoted, that seems like the first tangible news that should be important to the US as a whole. What was the delay between official making the announcement, and CNN reporting it? If the evacuations were in fact overlooked (especially by CNN), then I'd consider that a major issue.

Have any other tanks blown since the fire first started, or have they been able to keep it under control?
Yep..under control, in some way..still...original number was 11 out of 40.
Last number was between 15 to 18.

From people around he area:
  • The fire seems to be more intense now than yesterday (and higher too).
  • Small explosions can be heard every now and then.
  • The "jet fuel tank" is sill in danger and the one they are trying to protect the most.
  • It has been nearly confirmed that it was indeed a criminal attempt rather than an accident.
  • There are twice the amount of firefighters, but few were removed from one of the areas because it's expected another tank could explode at any moment.

So, the fire has been going on for a full 24 hours now too I take it?

All I saw on it on the news today was them saying 11 of 40 tanks exploded, and showing some 15 second stock clip of the fire a bunch of times.

On a tangent, did they ever get proof of why those two airline pilots missed there mark by 150 miles?

THIS!

Who the fuck cares if the news is on CNN or not? How is that relevant to anything other than being an attention whore? The people that needs to know already know, is not like anyone can do anything to help put out the fire or something...

If we all band together we can put it out with the power of our hope! Grab the guitar, and we shale start a song of hope, to save those grand people in the small commonwealth of Puerto Rico!

This is like the one that happened in Toronto.

The media would normally be all over this, but they aren't, just like with the Toronto case.

My guess is the media has been over the years asked not to cover such events too much because it may incite some people. There's no reason why this wouldn't be on the news, yet some surfing-squirrel would be.

They are starting to control it. Only 5 tanks are burning. The smoke cloud is still up there. Some acid/dirty rain fell earlier though. Gotta wash the car.

I just don't know, they should be able to squeeze out a 15-20 minute segment on it. My only guess is that they can't get anyone over there quickly and have no good way to gather information on it.

I don't know. Since 9/11 I felt like the news media would never cover things like this like they used to, unless it's a natural disaster.

Well, it's over!
Around a few hours ago they finally controlled the fire, they are still around in case some spark or soemthing else could reignite the fire, but heck there were videos of the inside ..the aftermatch ..and a press conference detailing things about it.

Over 600 people were evacuated, starting tomorrow the yare going to need to go their houses and then see if tehre were any damages to claim..

What is irnoic in all this is that the incident, there were no death or injures..yet, 16 people were killed ..assassinated (drugs, vengeance, random, etc..) during the weekend.

So yeah, everything seems to be back to normal. Now to wait and see what the investigation reveals, as of right now everything's pointing to a criminal attempt and there are tiplines in place and emails just i ncase people know something about it.

Talk about irony on the bold part. Disregarding that sad part though, good news! I do hope we get to find out what was the actual cause of this with an official announcement.

Good news. Nice. Humans being Humans again, not nice. Oh well. That could have gone a whole lot worse. Gotta be thankful for that.
