I cannot play anything but Ubisoft games or similar open-worlds

I have a similar problem with linear games. I don't enjoy them as much anymore. I prefer open areas to explore. As for Ubisoft games, they have made great open worlds no matter how much some people try to deny this

Ghost Recon Wildlands has a fantastic open world with different biomes and cities, I love that game. Same goes for Watch Dogs 2 open world, it's awesome. They definitely have talent but there is a decline in terms of quality in their latest games, Watch Dogs 3 open world was quite underwhelming, same goes AC Shadows or Avatar.

I love me some good open worlds and Ubisoft has provided that in the past but lately they seem to have lost their magic
Man, Watch Dogs 2 had a great open world but story and characters were meh. I did like to tool around it it though.

I still need to try the new Ghost Recons. Which one is decent for SP, Wildlands?

Edit: Best recent open world game is KCD2, no question. Well, and of course RDR2.

Cyberpunk has an interesting setting and design but the "City" is pretty dead due to severe lack of interactivity. This can be remediated with mods a bit.

Yeah I agree that the story and writing in WD2 is not the greatest but I think it's a great game nonetheless

As for Ghost Recon, Wildlands open world is awesome and one of the best tactical games in the market

Thanks, going to try it out. And yeah, I did like WD2 which is why Legion was such a let down. What the hell were they thinking?

And the whole "Dogs" thing reminds me of Sleeping Dogs. That's an open world game that was really well done.

I don't hate Ubisoft open worlds but they really need to look at Where Winds Meet for a better idea at how to populate the world with things to do and see. I'm currently playing through AC Shadows for the first time and while I am enjoying it (mostly), there is SO MUCH NOTHING in between points of interest. Even in Kyoto there are only a select few people to interact with, which really makes the world feel less alive than WWM

What's weird is that Watch Dogs 2 and Odyssey had a lot of things going on in the Open World. Ubisoft's design degraded since those games, IMO.

I've been trying to play Star Wars Outlaws. I can't do all this sneaking around. Can I simply go into an area blasting? I heard that removing sneaking got patched after other complaints.
I'm about to bail on SWO and look for something else. I wanted to give it a try since it's on Gamepass but this is more frustrating than fun.
I need to go back and actually play that game, I hear its better now after some fixes. I am very disappointed that it did not sell well and that the sequel was scrapped. I am not a huge Star Wars fan but I did enjoy the new Jedi series from Respawn Entertainment and Star Wars Outlaws I feel like could have had a great potential.

Every time I used to play an Ubisoft game, I think "this is fun" for about the first 10 hours and then I realize that is pretty much everything the game has to offer for the next 100 hours. They are the kings of bloat for the sake of bloat. And I used to be a hardcore Ubisoft fan, I literally own every game they made up to Valhalla and a few since. They don't care about making good games anymore, they care about MAUs and engagement and hours played and all that other bullshit that has infected Western gaming.

The Ubisoft hate isn't really about the games being overtly bad or anything. It's more about their complete and utter lack of any kind of originality.

While I personally find the games you listed (the ones I've tried anyway) to be extremely tedious, the same can honestly be said about large parts of Death Stranding 1 for example. Yet I hold that game in very high regard simply because it was original.

Most people can appreciate devs who swing wildly and strike out, you know they're trying and they're bound to crush one eventually. Few people appreciate devs (especially huge ones like Ubisoft) who try to bunt 20 times in a row and still strike out pathetically. I guess they may hit a goofy-looking single every now and then but they definitely ain't hitting any dingers.

Say what you want to but Ubi perfected the formula for open-world games, milking them to the maximum.
I found out I was playing recently almost exclusively Ubisoft games: Outlaws, Shadows, Valhalla, Avatar, Far Cry 6, etc.
Linear games do not give me any fun anymore.
And I still don't understand the general hate towards Ubisoft. Their stocks are hit hard but I do not see the reason for that in their low performing games.

Am I the only one loving Ubisoft output?
I partially agree with you OP.

You can criticize Ubisoft games but you can't fault them in these areas:
  • Visuals and art direction, industry leading world building
  • Mission freedom and world design, you can approach a mission in many ways, liberate a garrison in many ways or use many tools, sure it's the same activity but it works
  • Performance and optimization after AC Unity is incredible, most Ubigames are very well optimized and run flawless, very stable and very performant given the visuals. AC Shadows is imo the most optimized game I have seen in years and has some of the most fun and fluid combat and vibrant, lush amazing world, Avatar is also extremely well optimized given the visuals. Division 2 looks incredible and plays great. FC6 has really really good animations and fluid combat.
  • Very generous with discounts
  • Industry leading accessibility options.
  • I had no problems with Ubisoft Connect for any game (all Steam purchases)
  • Really comfort games, familiar, fun and they do have cool moments.
The problem however with Ubisoft games (not old ones like AC2, etc) is that they are not MEMORABLE. I like to play them but that's it. Complete the checklist, slowburn the huge world and tasks in a few months, be done with that 100% and move on.

Ubisoft games are nice, warm and familiar but nothing unique or memorable apart from the visuals and that is the biggest problem Ubisoft has, it doesn't take risks and I'll be super sad if it goes down but hey, maybe if it's dead, I'll remember those games. Bittersweet. If Ubisoft finally manages to make their games memorable by dying, so be it.

I have a soft spot for Ubisoft too. I dislike Assassin's Creed though, I think it's a pretty subpar franchise. But Ubi occasionally puts out a banger or two. The new Prince of Persia was great. Rayman is always cool. Star Wars Outlaws was pretty good, even though it suffered from the usual Ubi bloat and terrible main character. I like Ubi better when they put out smaller games like Child of Light or Valiant Hearts or Immortal Fenix rising. Unfortunately they've ruined their reputation with their shitty micro transactions and anti consumer practices.

If you enjoy it, why do you care what people think??

But to answer your question, UbiSoft games used to be fun but forgetable, I mean I played every Far Cry, Watch Dogs, AC game until Shadows, I can't for the life of me remember a single quest or mission from either of those games, had fun playing them though

I only like their farcry 2, 3 and 5, then wildlands, the best is wildland in my opinion. as long as not trapped in their MTX

I was gonna slag you off but then I realised I'm currently playing AC mirage and I'll be playing Star wars outlaws soon.

It's a great formula. People just get sick of them after a while. Strangely I don't.

I've realized I just cannot play open-world games. Too much time spent traversing, doing meaningless shit...

The 'ubisoft game design for open world games' is easily the most influential 3d game design you can see today... that idea of 'mark a point to open a part of your map and explore that part of the map' is used almost ad nauseum for other games... problem is other games were able to iterate on this conpect, and Ubisoft is stuck on it until today, and does not know how to make other things on the SAME concept.

I find myself in a similar boat. Although I find most of their games painfully average, but just being there is usually enough to get my money's worth.

Give me a big world to explore, streamlined combat and a progression system and I'm yours for at least 20 hours.

I have to admit, I love Ubisoft open-world games!^^

I played all the Far Cry games from part 3 onwards pretty much in one go, and I really enjoyed them!

But I can also understand that others find this kind of thing boring, after all, most missions are pretty much the same and all the game mechanics are almost identical, but hey, tastes differ!

The last one I really enjoyed from any developer was ass creed odyssey. It was really good.
I second this. Odyssey (and Origins) are the best open worlds from a Western company ever.

Compared to Odyssey a game like Horizon is an amateurish open-world game, it's bad, really at that. Far Cry 3 and 4 were great too. All the others FC and AC after those more or less sucked, mostly because of their new political agenda that killed creativity.

I also enjoy some Ubisoft games, OP. There are many things to criticize but also they are many things that are well done but I don't see myself playing mainly Ubi games. They are very repetitive to the point that sometimes they can feel like reskins. Once in a while, however, they can be very enjoyable.

There are so many options if you want to continue playing Open World games that I think the best approach would be to visit Steam and search under that category or Open Critic if it does have that option.

Opposite here, I crave a more curated experience.

I was disappointed when I realized nioh 3 went open world, aimlessly wandering around in the demo hitting map markers felt boring

Not a fan of open world games. I do like them when done well but the vast majority give no reason whatsoever to explore outside of the narrative driven gameplay.

It's funny because I find open world games to be boring and a complete chore. I have enough work to do in life. I don't want to feel like playing a video game is a job.

While the majority of their stuff is bland I always respect their first attempts.

AC, ac origins (first nu ac), Division, Wildlands, FC3 (the first real ubi for game), even the first watch dogs i look back on fondly (i wish people didnt shit on it because theres a great series that builds and follows Pearce and his gritty shenanigans, instead we got clown world stuff)

But they always fumble when they franchise it

Rayman (although no open world), Ghost Recon, Far Cry, The Division, AC, yeah those are all pretty good franchises.

But there are also plenty of jank in some of them, sometimes way too much. Far Cry enemy respawns is comical..

Been waiting for the perfect Ubi game for ages. I mean, with so many games to iterate from, how has it not happened...

Were you kicked in the head by a horse? Games are utter shite. Have been for years apart from rainbow six siege. Bring back the old Ubisoft for fuck sake!

The division series is probably the only open world of ubis i can stand because you have builds and loot and whole bunch of things with strategy and tactics with coop and such. I was like wow this is great!

If the OP enjoys it, I guess that's all that counts.

I just wish their side-quest content wasn't so bland and repetitive. The move to make their worlds bigger has also diluted that variety, and I think all of them would benefit from being smaller.

What you describe is near-exactly what videogame hell would be like for me.
