I can't do portable gaming anymore.

I feel you OP, I love my vita and I have dozens of games on it that I would love to get to, but I just can't, because although my oled vita is a beautiful, black, sexy beast it's also an ergonomic disaster, the buttons are too tiny and too close together, keep touching the rear touch pad no matter what, my hands fall asleep every couple of minutes. So frustrating.

I find the ergonomics of every portable gaming system, especially phones, to be complete and utter shit.

While I don't feel this strongly, I do find myself always purchasing some type of controller-like grip for handhelds under a certain size. I understand they're meant to be portable or fit in a pocket, but I find myself usually playing my handhelds at home so having a hunk of plastic attached to it isn't a big deal. I was skeptical about grips before I used them, but they really did make a big difference for me and made it much more enjoyable to play.

Rumor is portable systems and phones work while laying down on the couch/bed/floor or in more casual sitting positions. I don't think I have ever seen a human use their portable or phone as you describe so I'm thinking this is just exaggeration on your part.

Ultimately it will come down to what you enjoy playing. If there are great games you want to play on a portable then I suspect you'd be playing them by now. Maybe your taste in games has simply shifted to genres not typically on portables?

I agree with OP 100%. Playing on a portable blows. Problem is, 3DS has some incredible games that can't be played on anything else and it's worth the suffering.

This is where I am. I want the games but I hate the experience. I have both N3DS and Vita but I've completely switched the Vita gaming over to a PSTV with whitelist hack. The actual Vita just sits in a drawer. So that leaves the N3DS and the 30 games I have for it. I know I'll never play them all. I want to, but there's not enough time and a full console/PC gaming experience always trumps the portable one for me so it's barely played. The only time I ever do any serious handheld gaming is on vacation. I take comfort in the fact that even if dedicated handhelds completely die in lieu of phone games (yuck), I've got enough 3DS software to last me the rest of my life.

Yep, I'm finished with handheld gaming (for now) as well. I don't have a whole lot of gaming time these days and made the decision that either the 3DS or PS4 had to go.

If Nintendo still make a handheld when I'm retired, then I'll get back into it. For now, I had one last play through of Link Between Worlds then gave it up.

My boy inherited a royal blue Fire Emblem: Awakening 3DS with a wonderful library of games.

I have that problem too with Vita, except maybe every 15 min or so I have to put it down for a second. I guess it's the hard/sharp edges.

I think I'm a little older too now so it's harder, I love my Vita still though, but I do have trouble keeping my eyes on a smaller screen these days.

Everyone loses accomodation reflexiveness when they get older, so I'm probably there now. It's harder, but I still try to play my Vita when I can.

I shall love my Vita forever though, even if only for playing PS1 games on the go, that's just a dream for me.

I prefer portable gaming. I play my vita and n3ds a lot more than my ps4/x1.

Love being able to just lay back in bed and play and relax.

I recently bought the jxd7800, it's a portable that plays almost every game between commadore64 and dream cast all the games are free for download. And u can download all the games in the device itself(also a lot of Android games you can download for free) the great thing is that it has a 6 inch screen. And you can hook it up to your TV with hdmi.

Can't believe that I bought it for 100 dollars.

I'm playing fzero for the n64 almost every evening before going to sleep.

I really recommend it.

Nintendo's been kind of shitty at ergonomics since the Wii/GBA SP. Square-ish shapes aren't comfortable to hold, and the tiny d-pads on the Wii and 3DS are the worst. My hands actually start to hurt if I play the 3DS for long enough periods of time.

But I find portables to be the one platform where I actually finish games. I'm too distracted at a console or a PC. With a handheld, it's often all I have on me (commutes, bathroom breaks, etc.)

bought this last week. How do I add emulators?

Vita TVs are $30 on clearance at a lot of places. I got one from Walmart the other day so I would have no excuse to not play Persona 4.
Not in EU, though. They still sell it at 50€ or more on internet. Somebody offered me an us one at that price, but between the shipping costs and buying a second memory card... Plus the fear of getting caught again in customs and having to pay a massive VAT.

Mmm, come to think about it, one of the reasons I played the hell out of GBA (and gb/gbc) was the gameboy player. Being able to play it while commuting and then on the couch at home was the best thing ever.

The OS and 'experience' of playing a game on one feels about 3 gens old compared to my iPad. Not to mention the difference in display quality, pixel density, horsepower, etc.

It's a bastard because lots of the 'traditional' games I want to play come out on dedicated handhelds, I just can't drag myself to play them anymore.

I sometimes need lots of battery life or a good place to sit to play mobile. I use mobile for mostly internet browsing. If I could have a device that had multitask, dedicated gaming, maximum comfort, and battery that lasts for long hours I'd never put the thing down.

What's the point? If I'm at home I have my PC and more than enough good games to play. If I'm not at home there's a good chance I can't be playing a game.

Handheld gaming was awesome as a child, but that's about it. The games overall are just not as good as console/PC games and the graphics and controls are always bad.

I think the point is that portable gaming should present an experience that cannot be replicated or would be subpar on your pc or console at home. Unfortunately that's not usually the case and you end up with shit ports like hyrule Warriors legends on n3ds or iOS games with virtual buttons and analog sticks just because it technically runs.

I've played almost exclusively on handhelds for the last 10 years due to the fact that I either had shitty, tiny TVs set up way too far across the room or no TV at all.

When I got a new monitor I bought a 360 and a cheap Ikea lounge chair and started discovering the console games of the last generation.

Buying so many fantastic games for dirt cheap while still being wowed by them due to limiting myself to handheld games for such a long time is such a great experience.

Just in the past few months I played all the Platinum titles, Fallout NV, GTA 5, Saints Row, Forza Horizon, Resident Evil 4 and Remake, Red Dead Redemption, Just Cause 2, the classic Devil May Cry series, the Cave ports... Almost all of them for under 10€ each.

It's like waking up from a coma. I can easily keep playing my 360 for the next couple of years. It really has its benefits to be so late to the party that everybody has already gone and you can keep eating all the leftover pizza.

Have some fantastic memories of my handhelds, though, and I still love sitting on my bed with my handhelds as a complementary experience. Proper grips are a MUST, though.

Yea, hard to compete with pirated roms I guess.

I'm the opposite. I don't have the time or patience for a home console, but I can definitely get down with portable gaming. It's fun, fast, and I don't need a TV to play.
