I can't get over how bad Metal Gear Solid is

That reminds me of another two complaints I had.

1. The torture scene was awful. Being forced to press a button super fast is stupid.

2. The backtracking. Ugh, it was awful. Please, someone try to defend the backtracking in this game.

1. I always looked at this as a nod to the Track & Field games, another Konami series. It doesn't defend the mechanic, though.

2. The backtracking did tend to dull the pace of the game at times for me, but I rolled with it just to see what happened next.

The game that got me into stealth was Splinter Cell Blacklist. Since then I've played Dishonored and the Arkham games. Nothing has topped Blacklist though in terms of pure stealth.

Ah, you shoulda hunted down a Gamecube and played Twin Snakes. Easily the best way to experience MGS1.

Others with the rosest of rose tinted glasses will tell you otherwise but don't listen to them. Twin Snakes is the best Metal Gear Solid game and it wasn't even made by Kojima. Dennis Dyack made it.

If you hated it this much, you wouldn't have taken the time to beat it.

Oh, this is powerfully wrong. Super wrong. There are two kinds of games I am absolutely guaranteed to complete:

1. Games I am loving.
B. Games I am hating.

It's the middle-ground, dull stuff that gets tossed aside. To hate a game is just as powerful as to love it. And to understand your emotions is priceless.

Incredibly overhyped series and director coming from someone who actually loved MGS and MGS2 back then. Just finished GZ, thought it was dog shit, then decided to give the older titles another shot before V comes out and turned out it was a huge mistake.

The music is still great, though.

Yes.

Question: Is there more stealth in the rest of the games? I wanted to play a stealth series, but really I was forced into shooting almost everyone after the half way point. A perfect example of this are the elevator sequences.

That means you even failed the torture (despite getting an arm massage!) and got yourself the alternative ending. Most people prefer the other one I think. (at the very least it would have reduced your complains about the love context).

There is already a lot of stealth in MGS1, but I would say the stealth in the later games is more what you would expect compared to Splinter Cell. There are still a ton of bossfights which I've never heard anyone complaining about...
Though it depends highly on the difficulty setting. On high/extreme you will get severely punished for getting detected, there are more enemies, cameras etc.

Twin Snakes is an abomination and to suggest it over the original is ridiculous.

I'm not even going to bother cut-and-pasting my argument again this again, I'm just going to point out the ridiculous, opinion-nullifying hyperbole that is "an abomination."

It's a remake of a video game. It didn't murder your entire family.

I'm so curious. How old are you? What was your first videogame system? What was the first game you played? When did you starting gaming?

I'm not here to make fun of you, I'm just trying to understand how everything seems like an enigma to you.

What a troll post.

If you hated it this much, you wouldn't have taken the time to beat it. And then posted about how you completed a game you hate so much, with a click-bait title no less.

The fact of the matter is you just wanted to get a rise out of people, in which case you've succeeded without fail.

My bias aside, a lot of the specifics you mentioned aren't untrue, but they did nothing to take away my enjoyment of the game.

If I'm playing devil's advocate, I'm guessing you are of the younger generation and weren't playing MGS when it first came out. In that respect, I suppose I can see how the clunkiness of the game compared to modern games could turn you off.

With that said, if you didn't think the game was stealthy enough, you were playing it wrong or on too easy a difficulty. If you didn't like the melodramatic dialog and story, that's just part of Kojima's charm. If you thought the controls clunky, well... you're right, but... "get gud?".

I hope you got what you wanted out of creating this thread in the manner you did.

You're wrong on all accounts. I'm not from the younger generation... I bet I'm older than you are. Anyway, I made this thread for two reasons:

1. To vent my frustrations over this game. I wanted to beat it tonight, and I just played for about 4 hours straight.

2. I want to know if I should bother with the rest of the series. I bought the collection with the intention of playing the whole thing because I had heard such great things.

His criticisms are extremely hyperbolic...but they aren't wrong, really. A lot of rose colored glasses in this thread.

How could there be so much wrong in just one post?

A lot of it was just growing up with the series and see it evolve. Look at resident evils tank controls, games in those days just weren't as fluid as they are now and we're cutting edge at the time and MGS still is.

MGS4 might be closer to what you want but MGSV TPP is for sure going to be the kind of stealth and gameplay you are looking for.

Ps: check out STYX for an amazing stealth only game. It's free on ps+ and always on sale on steam!

I've played MGS and MGS2, I enjoyed them although I've always found the dialogue, voice acting and story to be pretty unbearable. SO convoluted. I guess it might just not be for me but I don't wanna accept that because of how loved the franchise is, I'm gonna keep trying I swear!

Don't want to be that guy, but yes, you can still get a strong impact out of an old game :/ Just because it's old doesn't inherently inhibit a response from you. Needless to say, I agree he shouldn't be judging it on modern standards, because if you do, it becomes a lot harder to enjoy it.

And nah, 3/4 don't need remakes. 1/2 I would argue are fine as is, but that's a diff argument. But yeah, 3 especially, it's pretty perfect as it is, weird controls and all.

I never said you couldn't get an emotional impact out of an old game...

Listen - MGS1 was a game that invoked "its like a real hollywood movie". It was renowned for it's cinematics, it's engaging voice acting, cheography and detailed presentation. That has since become dated, and the suspension of disbelief in that sense deteriorates significantly.

As for MGS3, it's one of my favorite games ever, but the game is flawed to shit. The AI is dumb, the game is oddly restrictive, wrestling with the UI (health, consumption, remedies) is a pain. The story and concept is way too good for what it is. It's totally hold back by its hardware and time it was made in.

When is the last time you people have played MGS? I literally just finished it tonight. I went in with an open mind (afterall, I committed to $30 for the Legacy Collection) and I was extremely disappointed.

As for my comment about the writing being done by a 15 year old virgin, I am talking about the discussions of love in the game, as well as how the characters fell in love with people they didn't even know. Am I supposed to laugh at Otacon's love for Sniper Wolf? It didn't seem that way at the end of the game, but it was really pathetic.

I played it for the first time in 2012 or 13. It's a classic.

And you've missed the point. One of the themes explored in the game is the conflict between legend and reality. Specifically, people rarely live up to the idea of that person we've built up based on limited information. See "the legendary Solid Snake," "she's a good person [because she likes dogs]," "Frankie said that?," etc.

3. GO PLAY METAL GEAR SOLID 3! Apologize for your insulence and be gone!11!11!11

Jokes aside, are you one of those people to call old movies boring?

I'm 30, and I've owned NES, SNES, N64, GC, PS2, 360, PS4, Gameboy, GBA, DS, and 3DS.

This has very little to do with the age of the game, despite what everyone wishes.

"Your opinion is different than mine so F U OP!!"

It's not even that at this point, this happens all the time with MGS around here. It's kind of different and an acquired taste so it's not that hard to rip on, but people get mad defensive and baited pretty easily when it comes to the series.

You're right.

As a troll, the OP is...pretty good.

No, I think any fan can admit that there's basis for some of these points.

The hyperbole is exactly what makes them wrong.

I could call you edgy or something OP. But I won't. The series just isn't for you and MGS1 I feel is one of those you had to be there things. That or you need a certain amount of patience for old school games.
Either way you didn't enjoy it and that's cool. Hyperbole aside.
The series is one of the best in gaming, in my opinion, but not everyone will like everything.

In the end Big Boss > Solid Snake. Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 and 4 never managed to capture my interest at all, but MGS3 is one of my favorite games of all times, Peace Walker was good, Ground Zeroes was a really good demo and MGS V is shaping up to be another one of my most favorite games.

I agree that Big Boss is a better more well rounded character that showed more range in his emotions, but let's not get overboard here.

It has a lot to do with the age of the game when complaining about game mechanics that were a staple for the time.

I think I'm in love with this post. Bravo!

While I do not like MGS much, I can understand why people like it.
(I actually enjoy Peace walker quite a bit, maybe because it's more action packed and I skipped most of the story? Other previous entries not so much.)

3. The dialogue. Christ, what a disaster. I'm sure everyone who's played this knows what I mean, so I won't even go into detail here. The dialogue felt like it was written by a 15 year old virgin in an honors English class.
This is my major problem.
The dialogue is fucking horrible most of the time.
I bought MGS3 HD because people say it is the pinnacle of the series, but gave up playing after 30mins of teenage melodrama bombardment.... Christ I have heard people saying "the dialogue is so cheesy it becomes endearing", or something, Good Lord.....

Honestly, MGS also becomes a lot more beautiful after playing MG2 because you can realize what the "Solid" part was about.

Original MG is a stretch, MG2 is gold.

MSX versions, obviously.

STAHP! Seriously, everyone needs to stop suggesting OP play the other games in the series if OP disliked MGS1 that much he will not enjoy any further games in the series. MGS1 was the pinnacle to suggest that MGS3 is this total revolution that will change his opinion on everything is just insane. OP just stop playing, clearly the series isn't for you.

Why did you play all of it?

Because I'm hoping the rest of the series is better. I expected this game to be dated, but I expected the game to be a lot different. I'm super disappointed in the backtracking, and how the stealth from the first area is completely removed for 75% of the game.

There are only 2 or 3 sections that require any sort of backtracking, and at least one of them (getting the PSG1) can be skipped if you explore/know about it beforehand.

how do you get the psg1 before sniper wolf? I'm fairly sure the elavator button to go to the weapon warehouse doesn't work once you get the n°5 card from Meryl.

OP did you just run around shooting everyone with your FAMAS and unsuppressed SOCOM?

You probably won't like MGS2 as it literally doubles down on MGS1. Literally.

I'm probably the youngest on this topic by a mile and I still can go back to games, so yeahh, it's not that :/

MGS3 is great still ;-;

And yeah I edited my post like 2m later I realized I misread yours ;-;

Haha! Alright OP. Resell it on eBay or something. Not everyone will understand or appreciate the series, I suppose.

I think MGS is without a doubt one of the greatest games ever made. And it's not nostalgia because I only played it for the first time about five years ago.

In particular, I think that the writing and dialog are among the best in any game. Some of the codec conversations are absolutely enthralling.

The level design is brilliant and it is one of the only games I have ever played where the backtracking really makes sense because you're infiltrating a base.

Also, the controls aren't great by modern standards but my guess is that the OP forgot to turn on "analog" controls so he was stuck with 8 directional control.

All in all, the game is an absolute treasure and masterpiece and I feel really bad for anyone who can't appreciate its brilliance because it's that good.

The game that got me into stealth was Splinter Cell Blacklist. Since then I've played Dishonored and the Arkham games. Nothing has topped Blacklist though in terms of pure stealth.

So we've got two piles here.

Great stealth:
Batman
Dishonored
Blacklist

Worst game I've ever finished:
Metal Gear Solid

I mean congrats, you got the replies you set out to catch.

It doesn't work immediately but you can go back at some point before getting to that fight. I remember doing it more than once.

You beat Sniper Wolf with the Nikita, didn't you?

Hmmm fair enough. But now you're probably not playing any more right?
