Don't listen to what anyone says, just read it. Also start at the Golden Age arc. Chapter 9? The last chapter of volume 3. Gut's birth.

The earlier poster was right that the first couple volumes are very weak by the series standards. It's kind of like how a lot of people get turned off of reading The Lord of the Rings because of all the boring birthday party cruft at the beginning. You want to start reading Berserk at the Golden Age arc.

Yeah. The first two volumes don't have the weight of the later ones because you don't have all that rich backstory that explains why you should care about any of the action.

Most of the Berserk influence in the Souls/BB game doesn't come until later in the series and unfortunately it hasn't been animated.

The Tower of Latria stuff is in there isn't it? Should be just before the end of the anime series.

Short term interest in things....I prefer shows that arent too long as they tend to cut out the BS.I did really like reading One Punch Man though, so maybe id like this.

EDIT: I thought Sandman was a book or two too long, Transmetropolitan though I thought was the perfect length

I don't know, I read one of the mangas as a 10 year old where he got
raped
, very disturbing. Bit I also want to read the mangas, is there any guide on how to start?

I don't agree with skipping the first two volumes and going directly to the Golden Age arc. I say just start buying volumes and reading.

Just keep in mind the truly great stuff begins in the Golden Age arc, which is in flashback.

Don't watch the movies, watch the anime or go straight into the manga. You can watch the movies afterwards, if you want. They're not the best way to experience the story, I'd say.

No one liked the dreamcast game?

Gut's Rage was a fun game. Pretty decent beat em' up that actually manages to keep pretty true to Berserk. It kinda feels like a decent filler chapter. Bad guys are bad, Casca's in trouble, Guts kills a bunch of things and the dark gets grim but all in all the day is more or less saved. The gameplay is REALLY arcadey which might turn some people off but it's got a decent skill ceiling, even if it is really difficult and cheap sometimes. Only downsides are that its pretty short and doesn't have a lot of replay value if you aren't the kind of person who sees a higher score as reason enough.

I LOVE Berserk personally, it's my second favorite manga sitting just behind Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (and it's best parts blow JJBA way out of the water).

I've had trouble getting into the recent anime films. I watched Berserk '97 way back and I think it's still my favorite anime ever. Obviously had to check out the manga afterwards but I stopped years ago due to the extremely slow pace with no end in sight. I'm afraid we're never going to get a solid conclusion.

You were intrigued by mere fluff based on the first movie alone. If I had to compare using a gaming analogy, it'd be like being exposed to Mario with Super Mario Sunshine instead of a Galaxy game. I got to see the first movie this morning way after reading the manga and watching the anime (which is superior to the movies in some ways and inferior to others) much earlier.

Berserk's world and characters really continue to be best presented in the manga. I love it, but I'm not a purist who'd be opposed to a superior animated adaptation. It just hasn't happened yet. A single game could probably cover the entirety of the golden arc in a stunning fashion. What could come after would work even better since the gaming industry really excels in fantasy worlds and gory stuff which the conviction arc and millenium falcon arc contain in wonderful amounts.

Just read the manga. The films and anime suck in comparison. Btw is the manga still ongoing? It's been like 2 years since the last volume :(

Berserk is probably my favourite manga of all time.

Just start to read it and if you'll like it, you won't be able to stop. :D

Why don't we have a continuous anime for this manga like naruto or one piece. ot was not possible before but whats the excuse now

I'd be cool with Dragon's Dogma-like as well.

that is actually what i dream about daily..but whoever gets the first go I'm so down, it's bound to happen eventually.

we see all these images of the armor/signs in games they really should just go ahead and do it.

Or an I thinking of the wrong thing? ;p

Glad I'm not the only one that thought of this when seeing the thread title lol

I just read the first chapter after getting in the mood from the Souls series as well. It was okay. There were some cool bits, but so far it hasn't really hooked me. I'm assuming it gets better though so I'll stick with it.
It didn't sell me either at first. I got the first two volumes as a trial on a whim, enjoyed it, but didn't like it enough to continue. I was gifted the rest of Eclipse and the Golden Age for Christmas by someone near and dear in 2013, and upon getting around to reading it, was blown away. It's now my third favorite comic/manga ever. Fucking love it, fucking in there.

I don't think it's perfect though. Some panels I find to be completely unnecessary, sloppy, lazy filler. While I think the translation is excellent overall, the occasional roughness is very distracting. Finally, this is a personal problem I have with all manga though it may be a valid one--when compared to Western comic books, scenes in manga tend to last too long, occupy too many panels and pages for my tastes, with insufficient dialogue. Scenes in Western comics are usually resolved quicker, I find.

Aside from a few issues, it really is a wonderful read, like people've said. One of the few books that's moved me to tears, actually.

Seinen is not Shounen. The latter is more popular and more marketable to young audiences.

The OVA and movie formats suit Berserk's epic story much better anyways.

A lot of the content would make it more suitable for movies/ovas which would make it hard to cover all the content without cutting any material. If it could be done on TV, it'd still be smarter to just wait until it finishes.

Is there an arc i can just sort of stop at? Like Death Note where the first season is a fine conclusion to the series rather than the shit in season 2.

I read every Berserk released since it started. It would be the best manga ever if its writer wrote more than a few episodes per year. It's ridiculous that the manga is running for 26 years and it's not even close to being finished.

With this tempo, Miura will probably die before finishing it. Personally, I have gven up hope of ever seeing the end.

Maybe its a stupid question, but why doesn't Miyazaki adapt the Berserk manga into a game. He always refer to that manga in his games, why doesnt he ask permission to create game from that universe. Everyone would be happy.

Eh making adaptations tie you to the rules and limits of that universe. Being inspired by an IP allows you to grow your own ideas that arent held back by the IP.

You can try to stop at the end of the Golden Age arc; that's where the TV show ends.

It's also the apex of quality in the manga. The series has been pretty disappointing for, what a decade+?

;______;

OP, read the manga with this repeating non-stop

Thanks for this. Making this post felt awesome with this music in the background.

The conviction arc's end is okay since Guts manages to
get a hold
Casca and Griffith can continue where he left off after the eclipse. The
second eclipse
is just as amazing as the first in my opinion too. The Millennium Arc is epic (as is the art, holy crap), but it builds up to the realization of Griffith's dreams and the culmination the inner turmoil brewing inside of Guts' years as the black swordsman literally
becomes an inner demon
. I personally feel like Casca's
reawakening
could be a great stopping point that should be coming soon. It depends on what she plans to do once she finds out about what happened during and after the first eclipse.

The Conviction Arc is a great rest point imo.

so he is japan's george r.r. martin.

Eh...We still get a couple chapters every year and have a sorta consistent release schedule aside from recently where he did some other short manga series. His work's also shown through the art put in to the manga itself.

Most of the stuff in the manga after where the first anime left off couldn't air on TV these days.

At least r.r. revealed entire major plotline and ending to GoT screenwriters, so even if the man died, we'd see the end.

I highly doubt Miura did anything like that. I would advise against reading Berserk. It's fucking amazing, and when you get completely hooked, it stops and then you get to wait several months for an 18 page episode. If we are lucky, there is an episode every 3-6 months. There is no fixed schedule.

My only real experience with this series was through that Dreamcast game, Sword of the Berserk. I rememeber thinking it was a really good game, but I don't think I've touched it since 2001 or so. I recall the graphics and voicework being particularly good (for games of the time.)

The difference being Miura started to write Berserk at a young age. Then he became lazy and pervy and now he does nothing at all. Good for him, he is living the life, bad for the rest of the world :(

He did give us Gigantomakhia though, and he actually finished it :P

It is very good. But also it is probably the most gruesome work of fiction I have seen. No one is sacred. Horrible things are done to innocent people quite often which is a real bummer. Like if you are someone struggling with depression Berserk isn't going to be uplifting.
I still sort of cringe thinking about the fake fairy insect children, their designs and lore is so disgusting

That said the series is awesome. Really well done characters. Absolutely tragic characters . So many things from the Souls games come from it. Another downside is no ending yet. Hopefully it gets wrapped up one day.

Why did you only spoiler-tag that one bit?
I felt like that was a pretty important bit. Outright naming new characters, specific deaths and concrete accomplishments are spoilers. Saying someone's "dream's came true" is hardly a spoiler imo.

Thank God I did mention
the Skullnight
,
Griffith becoming a demigod
or
Guts/Casca's possible child
. Now that would ruin days.
You should spoiler tag all of it, I own every book and you manage to spoil me...
What are you doing with them after 26 years? I actually understand it might be a bit too much (despite vagueness) for a new guy, but someone who owns all the books?
