greatest manga to exist.

Read the manga (no excuses) or watch the anime (ignore episode 1 for story reasons). The new movies are okay.

What happened to the anime BTW?

They produced a number of episodes like over a decade ago and then stopped after like one season. Did they ever continue?

Greatest manga ever.
If you do not have the time to read it all you can just read the different ages in the manga that are arcs that can be viewed somewhat standalone.
The movies are horrible and the anime ends in a cliffhanger that will test your resolve and calmness.

Yeah. The first two volumes don't have the weight of the later ones because you don't have all that rich backstory that explains why you should care about any of the action.
Yeah but reading it gives much more impact when the later chapters DO happen.

What are you doing with them after 26 years?

I watched the 3 films 2 years ago and decided that I wanted to own every books, that was before I knew that Miura will most likely not finish it.

Nana by Ai Yazawa takes this one for me, similarly forever to remain unfinished.

One of my favorite anime too, didn't know it was in the same state as Berserk.

I thought that the anime was the end of the manga but I watched it a long time ago.

The anime aired in 97/98. They'll never make anymore because there's too much violence and sexual content to air on TV, and it wouldn't really help the manga sales at this point.

Read it OP. If you can't do that, at least watch the 25 episode anime. It covers the same arc the movies do but a lot better.

My bad

You are one of those few people who actually knows how to pace themselves lol. Everyone I know blazes through the damn things in a month and start complaining. When I made my post I tried to provide enough information that it would "intrigue" him without spoiling things in a major way. I got the impression that convincing him to read the manga would be pretty hard otherwise and getting more people interested in the manga versus the movies is a major win in my opinion.

Berserk was great at first, but turned into classic fantasy after the witch arc, so I bailed out. No idea if it returned to its dark tormented origins as of late.

It is very good. But also it is probably the most gruesome work of fiction I have seen. No one is sacred. Horrible things are done to innocent people quite often which is a real bummer. Like if you are someone struggling with depression Berserk isn't going to be uplifting.
I still sort of cringe thinking about the fake fairy insect children, their designs and lore is so disgusting

That said the series is awesome. Really well done characters. Absolutely tragic characters . So many things from the Souls games come from it. Another downside is no ending yet. Hopefully it gets wrapped up one day.
Yeah, it's funny, that. Or not funny, rather. The backside of every volume always sells it with the closing line of "gruesomely hilarious, black comedy, not for the faint of heart," or something like that, and honestly I hardly find any of it funny at all. I can see elements of black comedy, and it's certainly not for the faint of heart, and it is schlocky, but it's also really tragic and potentially really depressing. Seems like a strange way to sell it, no? What's up with that? Looking at you, Dark Horse.

I've read some of the manga, I couldn't say up to which volume since they were scans given to me by a friend who was a big fan. I got the point where
Guts's buddy finally comes back and basically takes over the kingdom or something like that, the details are a bit muddy because it's been so long

I'm not hugely into dark fantasy, so probably part of it was it just not being my thing, but I didn't really get a lot of the hype for it. The art itself was quite good, probably a set above most manga I've read, but the story itself was just...eh. I don't know, it started out interesting enough, but I started trailing off at some point and every arc had a "samey" feel after awhile.

I started reading on a friday and finished on sunday. Worth it.

Skullknight is the coolest. Only good thing that came out of the movies was seeing him in action.

Being strange makes sense considering it was made during the 90s in Japan of all places. I don't think it was drawn and written with Americans and Europeans in mind. That's probably would made it so interesting, just like anime was to early adopters.

SK is pretty cool. We could probably get a manga offshoot of his story alone if it were actually possible for Miura to handle both series at once without his hands exploding. Everyone goes through phases with Berserk and the final one is probably realizing that pleasing us at the pace we'd like would probably send Miura to his grave. It's not all hookers, blackjack and idolmaster. Drawing this stuff takes a lot of work.

Nah the mangaka became depressed and went into treatment for close to a year and since then there's been only a few short updates but that was years ago and it doesn' seem like it will ever continue.

You could actually feel the change in the manga which got pretty depressing towards now the end.

People who enjoyed Berserk should check out Vinland Saga.

Oh Skullnight, we'll never know who you are/were. We suspect, but we don't know :(

One of my favourite manga, but the slow updates really kill it. I hope that I get to see it finished, or Miura appoints a new illustrator to complete the story (if he decides he's done with Berserk).

Haven't seen the movies, but I'll give them a watch. I tend to like what fans seemingly hate (Evangelion 3.33).

I get that, but I just think it's a weird way for the American publishers to sell it to American audiences. They are the ones who wrote the backside synopsis for the translations, right? I mean, what I'm saying is it's not like decieving, dishonest, or even incorrect technically. It just doesn't seem entirely on point to me. It's a book with graphic depictions of child murder, rape, and mental illness, and they're like "you'll have a wonderfully fun time reading this ultra violent, chaotic, fun madness, you'll be sure to find it gruesomely hilarious." It's not a big deal, I just think it's a little weird, is all.

I enjoyed watching the TV show, minus the intro of course (yeah, I "don't know why" either). Tried watching the newer movie adaptation and was really turned away by the odd CG inclusions. My understanding is that they both cover what is essentially the same content.

There's also a Dreamcast game and an unofficially translated PS2 game.

I'd say it is sort of the same reason people like the Walking Dead or Dark Souls or horror movies, people like inescapably hopeless situations with cool morally questionable protagonists. Thank our Thanatos.

Ah

You're not wrong. I'm sure a few people might have been misled in that case. Makes me think we're sick in head when you put it like that lol.

Should just read the manga imo. I started it a few weeks ago and it's incredible.

Dark Horse does a great job with the English version and all the volumes are readily available on places like Amazon and InStockTrades. No excuses, read that shit!

The reason why Miura takes so long is because his art is very detailed and meticulous, something that the adaptations never really can showcase.

He's too busy with Idolmaster or doesn't know how to proceed the story anymore is the reason Berserk will never finish.

Idlemaster this, Idlemaster that. Miura is still young, he can easily finish the series in his lifetime, if he chooses to. But maybe he's largely moved on. Said his piece, made his money. Drowning in Idols.

Berserk is unfinished, but what is there is among the greatest the medium has ever produced, imo.

Most manga artists also have assistants who help them draw to keep the schedules. It's a much different system than American comic artists.

I'm watching the anime now with only two DVDs left. I also ordered the first manga and plan on watching the films (one's on Netflix, so why not).

I'm loving the anime.

I marathoned the original anime one night for like, no apparent reason. I liked a lot of it, but that ending sure was out of nowhere! I understand that the manga is quite different.

Anywho, the one thing I did notice is that, aside from Dark Souls, I'd say Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn take some cues from Berserk. Nothing too huge, just some small stuff like characters being similar. Oh, that and Radiant Dawn Ike is literally Guts.

Maaaan, the Berserk movies are so bad. What a crushing disappointment.

They totally nailed a lot of important scenes though (the ones that were hand drawn at least), and man that ECLIPSE THO
Also I don't think comparing ike to be "literally guts" is a good thing :/

Just in design. Character wise, quite different. However, both are pretty much concerned with getting stronger, but that's hardly unique to either of them.
