I don't know what Berserk is but Im intrigued

Berserk along with Hiatus x Hiatus are the only manga I know of that took the (years) timeskip to power up approach literally.

I feel like people painting Berserk as an entirely bleak, desolate, world of despair don't realy get the story fully. Berserk's world is definitely dark, but the story is thematically more about perserverance and moving forward despite all the shit life throws at you. This is strongly embodied by the main character, and even his name, Guts, is a reference to this theme. I'm positive that Berserk's ending, if we ever get it, will not be a total downer ending. It won't be a fairy tale ending either, mind you, but it'll be more about hope than despair. I'd expect it to be bittersweet honestly.

Aren't they working on a new movie? At least what I heard back then was that the final movie of the Golden Age Arc was not the last one.

The reason why Miura takes so long is because his art is very detailed and meticulous, something that the adaptations never really can showcase.

That doesn't really explain why the production rate has gotten so much slower than it used to be. It also doesn't excuse the fact that he spends years worth of production on filler stuff like ghost ships or mermaids.

Hearing about the Dark Souls/Berserk connection also got me interested in Berserk. I've read the entire manga now and love it.

For the record, though, I think some people find too many connections between Souls and Berserk. There are some clear inspirations, but some of the connections people come up with are a bit tenuous at best. Also, people say that Miyazaki is a huge fan, but we really don't know that. All I've ever been able to find is one comment he made about how Siegmeyer's armor looks a bit like Bazuzo. I think it's just as likely that the concept artists for the series are the ones who are the big fans.

Read it if you want, but Miura (the author) is dying before it's finished.

Where do you buy your Melange?

Another problem with Miura is that he has no assistants. Many of the big Manga-Ka have three or four assistants to help with a chapter to make the weekly release schedule of the major magazines.

I was somewhat obsessed with the manga up until about volume 16. It is an impressive work, and the art at times is truly immaculate. But I feel that it is just kind of meandering at this point. I hope Miura will finish it.

Dragons Dogma was way too traditional fantasy for me

People say that due to the Berserk armor. Dragon's Dogma was otherwise not nearly comparable to Berserk, in my opinion. I'm not calling it a bad game, I love it very much, but just the overall tone is very different from Beserk and even previous Berserk games.

I would advice you to watch the original anime instead of the movies, sn00zer. It is vastly superior and has a legendary OST.

In my opinion, the best way to experience Berserk is to watch the original anime and then read the manga right after. You'll want to after the ending.

I unironically love this song.

People always mention Berserk but rarely mention Weird Fiction as a major inspiration. Don't just read Lovecraft's stories, check out Clark Ashton Smith, who Miyazaki seems equally inspired by. Robert E. Howard as well... to a lesser extent.

Also, to those with no patience for bad writing I'd recommend NOT bothering with Berserk. The writing is juvenile, horrible, sexist, and so on. Fantastic art though, so if you're interested in Berserk for that you won't be disappointed.

So where do people read manga? I've never read any manga, but reading this thread really makes me think I should at least read Berserk (which sounds amazing and totally up my alley).

Berserk has definitely been a big inspiration for a lot of game designers. I remember reading about how Yoko Taro was partially inspired by Berserk for both Drakengard and Nier. Both from some of the weapon designs and some of the dark fantasy elements.

It's not really the berserk armor , Dragon dogma had several places that are VERY similar to ones in berserk ( witch forest hut is the best exemple ) and many build possibles are reallly , really close to berserk characters.

Plus fighting monsters in the dark with a Very big sword is ...

PRICELESS.

I mean , you don't think that fighting hordes of etherals wisps at night is kinda similar to ... that ?

Ps: i agree with you , the tone IS different , but the nods to berserk are clearly there.

Let's not forget that there's also a certain brown waifu that's eerly similar to a certain crazy woman from Berserk.

The anime aired in 97/98. They'll never make anymore because there's too much violence and sexual content to air on TV, and it wouldn't really help the manga sales at this point.

I heard they made a new anime since then, in like the last 3 or 4 years.

The sword design that the main character uses is very bad. It annoys me that it is so influential and many games have awful lumps of metal for the "best" swords in games and think that it is awesome berserk design. Look at real European swords for inspiration. I guess that just for this reason alone I prefer Rurouni Kenshin because the hero has a better sword.

The chapters are short as well. Some panels still have amazing art, but overall progression is way too slow.

Just like hunter x hunter it never seems to end. Ultimately I don't think it benefits from this at all, although it's still a fun read.

I wish the anime actually finished the season but yeah, I think they had to pull the plug middle of a peak due to EXTREME violence and sex. What a shame because it was getting incredibility interesting. I havn't seen the manga yet but I can tell GUTS is that one last hope that tells you need to push on or die like utter trash, eaten, or dissolved into nothing.

My introduction to Berserk began with the anime series last year, the ending pissed me off so much that I had to read the manga, at first it was amazing one of the best things I've ever read, Guts is a fascinating character and his relationship with Griffith compelling, and I really want to see where the road ends, that's if Miura ever ends it.

And whilst I do enjoy the manga, the amount of rape, misogyny and occasional violence that women are subject to in the series is really starting to roll my eyes, it's beyond juvenile and just plain cynical, perhaps I'm over analysing.

Sure, but they're nods at most. Doesn't really fill the void of a proper Berserk game :(

I thought that was publisher meddling; goading him to make ANYTHING and try to keep it light?

And for the same reasons (with the addition of an absurd amount of racism and classism), I'd recommend not bothering with Lovecraft.
Unless you're interested in finding out what gross garbage horror fans have managed to turn into an icon and a posthumous merchandise empire. It's quite a fascinating, if deeply disturbing.

Point about his sword is that it is just a huge lump of metal that no one could use and was just rusting away. Till he showed up that is.

A giant slab of iron's actually much how it's described rather than a sword like the pic above mentions.

You don't sound like much fun :(

If you're not willing to read years of manga there's no point asking because that's what it is. The movies/anime only cover one arc. Like maybe the first 90 something chapters or so. Or 7 years of a manga that's been running for 20+ years.

I burned through the manga for the first time in like a few weeks span years ago. You're dedicating time to read a comic book not some thick text. They're a quick and great read.

there's 37 of them and they take like an hour to read each, if that. not exactly Infinite Jest

Atleast the super long chapter updates give you time to re-read the manga over and over again. 2013 was crazy in that regard.

How many times can one man re-read a manga? Apparently alot.
