Just because the DS' hinge cracks doesn't mean all is for naught. To paraphrase what someone else said on this forum, just dab a little two-part plastic epoxy into the hinge and wait for it to cure in 24hours- now the rest of your DS will break before that hinge ever does. It's probably best to use this while the crack is still the hairline type to nip the problem in the bud. If it's a clean separation all the way through you might want to use a quick 7-min setting epoxy.
FWIW, I used Loctite plastic epoxy, costs less than $5. Just be careful when using any type of epoxy, of course.
