"....I hate your face." Ever refuse to play a game because of the MC?

the design didnt make any sense in Nier, because
the project gestalt in nier was meant for kids, where the original nier was involved. The people in the game arent humans, more like perfekt copys. So the original japanse design of Nier make much more sense in the game.
The Design was totally out of place

This isn't actually true.
Project Grimoire was meant for children and child soldiers, Project Gestalt involved people of all ages. Hamelin sent out clones of Noir around the world to find someone capable of becoming an Original Gestalt without consideration for age.

Not so much me, but anybody who says "No," I wish we could reverse 7 years to see what people had to say about GTA:SA. I was enraged at the internet then, when people made every excuse in the world that they couldn't 'identify' with a 'ghetto thug' main character or something... Yet somehow could identify with a Miami, Italian mafia gangster.

Oh God yes.

"I can't identify with a young 24-year-old living in a rough neighborhood in the 90s!"

*is shown a 1980s 35-year-old Mafia enforcer and 30-year-old Eastern European immigrant and former soldier*

"Oh yeah I can identify with these dudes."

I refuse to play games, regardless of their quality, if the artstyle is pretty much moeshit (like Racettear).

Look, artstyle will last the whole game. If I'm not going to enjoy what I'm looking at for the rest of the game, then screw it.

Most of the games with characters unappealing to me (Gears of War, God of War, modern warfare FPS, etc.) are in games featuring gameplay unappealing to me so I don't have to worry... games with unappealing characters that I played anyways because I liked the gameplay would be a bit more interesting for me to think about. Wind Waker, FFX, Nier, Planescape, and Vanquish being the only ones I can think of ATM.

Surprised to see both Geralt and CJ mentioned in this thread. Even though I'm not normally big on western games, I didn't see anything wrong with their designs. Neither of them were generic-looking (CJ you could pretty much set up to look however you want) and both fit their worlds. The main problem I had with San Andreas was its ridiculously long and frustrating missions without checkpoints :P

Hey man, don't generalize. Maybe they do work for the mafia and were just happy to see games giving their people appropriate representation.

No. Ill refuse to play games that don't make sense to me though, like emptying a clip into a human soldier with no real armor like in most Battlefield games.... That to me is a much bigger turn off. Have it make sense god damnit!

Especially frustrating. And no direct restart if you fail the mission, no, you have to drive the whole way back and stock up first again. But that's OT now.

I can't remember one game where I didn't play it because I didn't like the main character, and there are games where I don't like the main character, like FFX.

Just shameful.

A character designed solely for manchildren who like to see a woman pirouetting around in tight clothing showing her crotch.

Bayonetta was an awesome game. I thoroughly enjoyed its shamelessness. I don't understand why people get so worked up over sexual presentations in games. Who the fuck cares.

Just wondering, as they seem to the most repeated posts in the the thread, do find the people who hate bayo's design enough to not want to play the game the same people who don't mind the Dante redesign (at least in this thread) and vice versa?

While im sure there are many that are ok with both, I have found there is some parallel in the people who found Bayo too much and like Dino as well people who love Bayo, but hate the DmC redesign on a pure asthetic level.

Me personally, I cant discount a game purely on a MC but honestly I mind Drake to smarmy and smug for my liking. It helps that I don't like that style of game anyway to avoid the uncharted series.

El Shaddai:

Oh god, How could I forget this? Bought the game couldn't even finish the first level. Its actually a cool game but the design just irritated the fuck out of me. No. just fucking no.

CJ is my favorite GTA protagonist. I never felt any sort of disconnect because he was black

The animu dorks in Hard Corps Uprising dissuaded me from playing that game for a while. I wish I could replace their sprites with some 80s dudebros

Bit off topic, But re: Bayo

Much as i love the game and will defend it to my dying breath, There is one point in the game that I nearly put the controller down in disgust. Even Kamiya himself cannot defend this :- it was soooooooooo not needed.

I still think the majority of the game was a parody, but for me, this pushed it a little too far.

What irritates me is that people try and call out the Bayonetta character for being overtly sexual or slutty (which isn't the case at all imo), yet I haven't seen the same vitriol being leveled at the character designs from Dragon's Crown

Gross.

*stupid design*

Gross.

Here: they're both awful and embarrassing, though DC's is probably worse.

So is this Anakin Skywalker's and Justin Beiber's baby?

I thought I was the only one who thought that.

Gross.

I've always thought this was the stupidest design in gaming. Yes, including Luso.

It's kind of funny, even my mom loved bayonetta and she actually played through half of the game...and she hates all videogames that arent Centipede or Vigilante 8.

You mother seems like a smart lady with good taste.

I wish more in this thread were like her.

I liked Bayonetta despite the main character. Such a stupid looking design. I swear the charcater is modeled after one of those inflatable wavy tube guys you see at car dealerships.

Kagamin! LOL, fantastic!!

Let's see, I LOVE Raiden from MGS2 (its probably my favorite MGS game), Vaan from FF12 didn't bother me at all, Final Fantasy 8 is my favorite, gasp, a protagonist who actually has a character arc! Nier looking like a caveman didn't bother me, and Bayonetta is the character action game of the generation.

I literally can't understand what this means, maybe its your tag confusing me, but "moeshit" seems incredibly condescending. What to your mind is "moeshit?" aside from a doujin game, like the Atelier series? Japanese design in general?

I can't stand Daniel Craig as Bond and I don't care to play as him either. Especially when it's an eerie representation of a well known movie but with black toques and Liverpool accents and everyone dresses like an 18th century pauper because it's 2012. If you guessed I was talking about the new Goldeneye game you were right.. Too bad Brosnan would have told them where to go if they had tried to get him back for the game.. Long live Jason Bourne! errr, Bond! James Bond!

I thought I was the only one who thought that.

How could I forget Dragon's Crown? Sorry Vanillaware, I would buy this game if it weren't for those designs. Truly frightening stuff.

Actually, I've found that I like characters simply because they're the main character. When I spend that much time controlling them, they tend to grow on me. It's like, "I'm you, and you're me, so let's get along." I naturally identify with anybody I can control.

i always thought that the point of bayonetta is that she's so over the top and silly that her character is mocking the oversexualization of women in games.

you're given so many fetish outfits as unlockables, but they don't make her look sexier, just sillier and even more over the top.

She's modeled after typical fashion sketches or manga for women. If you hate Bayonetta's design that much there's a pretty good chance you're male.

Yeah I agree. She isn't a horrible character. Hell, I thought she isn't even porny because her style is exaggerated.

War in Darksiders is probably my least favorite designed Main Character. I played the whole game, but the only time he got any better was when I unlocked his end of game super armor. It wasn't great either, but if I remember right it was at least a simpler design.

Another +1 for bayoneta. My brother loves the game and I tried playing it. But I just couldn't get past the sexuality of the character =/

I absolutely hate every single thing about Bayonetta. Glad it didn't do so well.
Vanquish on the other hand, is excellent despite the difficulty.

Playing through the most recent Prince of Persia atm and this guy is a posterchild for this thread.

Looks like Squall needs to step his game up. Even this dude's belts have belts. And wow, that face... it's like half-way between "dat ass" and "derp".
