I just watched this Studio Ghibli film called The Cat Returns

My friend recommended it to me. I had never heard of it, but it was Studio Ghibli so it must have been good.

Well it was entertaining to say the least. It was nice to watch a lighthearted movie after my streak of watching tense ones. I actually found it extremely funny how silly it all was.

Who's seen it? I've never really seen it talked about.

I've seen it. I mostly watched it because of its loose connections to Whisper of the Heart. Thought it was a fun movie but not particularly memorable.

The way the topic is phrased makes me think it's the lead-in to a stand up routine.

As far as Ghibli goes, I thought it was an average c-tier (below god tier Miyazaki and overpowered Takahata) effort.

Pretty clever "spinoff" to Whisper of the Heart though.

It's actually one of my favorite Ghibli movies. I love it, flaws and all. It really helps that the English dub is just so charming.

I don't know why but when she saves the cat
and he just stands up infront of her
always cracks me up. I dig it, it's set in the same universe as Whisper of the Heart and works as a fantastic double bill with that film since it's a spin-off.

Yeah I was laughing at the silliness of the whole movie and this was definitely one of the highlights... lol

Watched it recently, wasn't very good. It's not underappreciated or anything, just not memorable like their other works.

Now, Porco Rosso and Only Yesterday, those are underappreciated Ghibli films.

I've wanted to watch it for a long time, but never get around to it, like most Ghibli films :(.

I loved Whisper of the Heart and I love Kaze ni Naru, so one day I'll finally watch it.

wow someone hasn't seen Eartthsea

Forreeeaal. The Cat Returns is more of a very pleasant distraction than something that I would wholeheartedly urge people to watch, but it's fun and well made.

Among highly rated Ghibli films, I guess I go against the grain on Arietty. It has 95% on RT but I didn't find it all that memorable aside from the great Ghibli production.

Cat returns is good and enjoyable. Not epic or emotional like other Ghibli films but its fun. I agree Pom Poko and Earthsea are the worst.

it was weird how she wanted to rail a cat

NO, it's totally not. That fucking cat was explicitly designed to be a "charming gentleman [cat]" --- just with the face and body of an upright-cat. Still a bit weird, but honestly I "get it" to some small extent. I'm sure most viewers found him 'charming' (just, y'know, hopefully not wanting to bone a cat).

I mean, look at fucking Simba here, that cool 90's hair wave was totally drawn into his mane to make him 'human appealing' -- I mean he's practically got bangs for chrissake.

It's so weird that animator's do this, but I'm not surprised when people find animal-like characters appealing (and I don't even like 'furries' or any of that). :S
On a semi-related note, great choice to get Cary Elwes for the part (both times).

The title of worst Ghibli movie can only belong to Pom Poko. Even an excellent english dub couldn't save that testicle-tacular train wreck of a film.

Yeah I hated this flick. It felt like it goes on forever, and for the most part the Tanooki are a bunch of assholes. I get their plight, but not really the story I wanted to follow. I liked that 'mockumentary' style it had going for it, but...bleh.
(and yeah, testic--- "pouches"...super distracting, super weird).

Yeah I think "pleasant distraction" is the best way to describe it

I like Arietty, but it's also really tame (despite the major themes behind it), a little slow, and not that much happens. I do think she's one of Ghibli's prettiest leads (and of the rare cases where the lead character doesn't have short hair), and the music is top shelf.

Its a spin off to whisper of the heart which is imho also great. The artstyle is,not, very ghibli like but its a,good, movie

Howl is Bad? Really?

Can't say I'm a big fan of Howl. Loved the setting, art and ideas but it didn't come together for me. In a weird way it felt like a retread after Spirited Away.

It was half-baked, underdeveloped movie. I was not at all surprised at all to learn of its origin as a short, stretched into a full-length movie. Definitely one of Ghibli's lesser efforts.

cat returns is ok but earthsea and howls make it look like high art

man what the fuck are you even on

"In Eddie's defense, they draw them really sexy!" lol

The Cat Returns in fun and light-hearted. Not one of Studio Ghibli's best or most memorable, but certainly not their worst.

Ghibli must be reaching for ideas if they're adapting Canadian short films now. I mean: "The Cat Returns"? "The Cat Came Back"?

AT LEAST TRY TO HIDE IT, YOU FUCKING HACK STUDIO.

(I think I maybe have seen it, but not sure. If not, well then, I want to see it. It looks interesting and not as talked about.)

It's good, like all Ghibli movies I've watched, but it's easly one of the more forgetable ones. It doesn't "feel" Ghibli enough, starting with the character designs.
Whisper of the Heart is my favorite, which is odd because that too is not a Miyazaki or Takahata movie.

It's probably the weirdest Studio Ghibli film I've seen (I've seen almost all of their feature-length ones) but it's weird in a good way. That said, it's probably one of the studios weaker films but we'll worth watching for fans. It ties interestingly enough somewhat into Whisper of The Heart too. Or, I suppose, the other way around.

I'm slowly gathering a collection of Ghibli films on blu-ray, so I look forward to a second viewing soon.

One of my favourite Ghibli films, but I recognise its weaknesses - it's rather twee, for one thing. The English dub is really good though and I loved the kingdom of the cat king.

It ain't Ghibli's best by a long shot, but it's still a very good film.

What the fuck is this shit I'm reading about Pom Poko though? It's not even Takahata's worst film, let alone the worst of the studio, fuck me.

It's smooth as hell when Baron Humbert von Gikkingen takes off his Zorro mask at the ball and runs off into the night.

Watch Whisper Of The Heart also, since it's a better movie and has connections to this one.

Love The Cat Returns. It might be my second favorite Ghibli movie (first is Totoro). It's got flaws, yeah, but it's cute and charming enough for me to see past that.
