I lost a job on a thank you note

Jesus, he still haven't responded. I woke up this morning to check this very thread!

Now I realize, he's just guaranteed to massively disappoint at this point. :(

I've sent thank you notes but it's never led to getting a job. At the same time, I don't think it cost me a job either. I did just get a new job and I start in two days, after looking for over 3 months. I think the difference between this job and every other application was that I got on really well with the interviewers.

When you guys say note, do you mean email or a physical piece of paper with writing on it?

Because if it's the latter, I have NEVER seen anyone leave a note before.

I would assume it's by field. I have given ones in the tech field and everyone else in the hiring process is around my age, a thank you note would go directly in the garbage. Same as a cover letter... But again in other fields they are more common

The only one I ever sent was this week, and mostly to remind the company to act quickly because I already had two offers on the table.

Posters do this shit on purpose.

Who the hell doesn't check their thread at least 10 or 20 minutes after posting? OP will wait til the thread is long dead to respond
Oh, the horror. He made you read a 8 page thread. He's a monster.

He's been around again. While demanding an explanation when he hadn't even been back might be a bit much, it's not unreasonable to expect one eventually when he's hanging around GAF.

Stop it. No need for the internet detective. He could have easily just looked at gaming side. I don't think this is the type of thread that demands certain actions.

If we can start expecting certain actions with certain posts, I demand everyone who post anything related to a 'first post' be forced to quote their very first post.

If you're going to make a thread about yourself you should at least have the decency to come back and contribute to said thread. I mean if he's got the courtesy to send a stupid thank you letter then you'd think he would also have the courtesy to contribute to the thread he created which we've bothered to take an interest in.

Just curious, which fields? Maybe there's a pretty clear divide between fields that do and don't explaining why some of us not only don't/haven't but are dumbfounded that some people do? I'm pretty sure it's not skilled technical fields like software development or any type of engineering that do this.

Higher education, certainly. It's common in business as well and other field requiring high levels of interpersonal communication.

Look at op's post history.. he's very sporadic and infrequent in his postings. He also gets confused when a hooters waitress scratches his back. Give him a few weeks.

OP probably plans on letting this thread die, and then do an epic gravebump 3 years later. Gotta earn that GAF legend status somehow.

I actually don't get why people needed more info than what's in the op.. I read it as the employer thought sending a thank you note in 2013 is super lame. Why would they hire someone who is super lame. I'm sure the contents of the letter were super lame as well, but the act itself was reason enough.

There is really no rhyme or reason as to why people choose to hire or not. The person reading your note could have bad gas the day they're reading it and deny you or they could be happy as hell hire you. Its random man so don't give up.

Why the witch hunt? Op was just posting he was feeling down about the situation, he doesn't owe us anything. This is ridiculous, he doesn't have to tell us what the note said if doesn't want to or felt embarrassed.

Is the OP from the US?
This thank you note rubbish must surely come from the land of mandatory tips.

Yes he does. This isn't his fucking personal blog, this is a discussion forum. Him being vague does not add anything to the discussion.

No he doesn't. That discussion part is bs. If there's nothing to discuss then it shouldn't be discussed, the thread should have have just died out; but it didn't because some have to get on other people's business in their quest to know everything.

I'm sure he didn't expect the thread would grow so much.

It's not a worldwide phenomenon, I've worked in a couple of European places where it's seen as a bit needy and uncommon. I have interviewed a few Americans in Europe and they've got quite a different point of view about interview processes.

This is called Off-Topic Discussion, hes not giving any input but whining about losing a job because of a letter. A letter which we have no idea whats in it. And people want to know whats in it because he posted about it, wtf you think people arent gonna ask?

Thread should have been closed by now anyway.

I imagine the last thing interviewers in the UK want, is to read through 200 shitty thank you emails.
