I never see people portable gaming.

I seen students popping them out when they get to class early.

Hell I just went out to dinner and saw a kid playing his 3DS as his parents were ordering his meal lol

If by portable gaming, you mean just handhelds, then while its not where near as common as smartphone gaming, I still see people doing it daily.

I commute to work on train, and alternate between bringing my Vita and 3DS with me. I've just had my 150th unique Mii via spotpass. That's just from people on my same train, as I never have the 3DS in sleep mode - I turn it off when I get to the end station. They'd be from adults, not kids, as schools have already started by the time I leave in the morning.

I've seen a few PSP players on the train, but only ever seen a single other Vita owner in the flesh. I'm sure there are more out there, as there's a lot of activity on Near. If I knew what the fuck was going on in Near, I might be able to see how many of my neighbours are Vita owners.

The problem I have with phone gaming is... well it's on a phone. If I'm going to be out and about I don't want a game to drain the battery on my phone when I need it for calls and text.

Dear sir, I salute you!

Dude, I'm 19. lol
But yes, due to my job, I am in a suit most of my time at work.

No one ever cares. The group I'm in right now plays Angry Birds, and such. Another guy plays DS and such quite a bit. I'm the only one with a 3DSXL.

It's alright to play games, even if you are in a high-priority position. Don't sweat it.

I see them occasionally at the grocery store, small kids riding in the cart and playing. I take my 3DS out with me a lot, though, and get a fair amount of streetpasses for someone who doesn't live in a big city. I've gotten streetpasses when kids get out of school and walk past my house on their way homes. I sometimes get a couple when I take my 3DS to church (this I assume is from areas for small children). My best haul is from Busch Gardens though, where I usually get 5+ people from a ~6 hour day, and mostly people from out of state or country.

I see more of them than I ever did past hardware, DS excluded. I think I would probably see even more if I was a kid, going places where other kids hang out. I don't see too many adults playing them, and I think that has more to do with smartphones. The interest and market seems to still be there with kids though.

The only Vita I've ever seen was a guy in the break room at work.

I catch shitloads of public transport to get to work and back, I've seen the DS and PSP gamers disappear, and iOS gamers are multiplying exponentially. I do see the occasional old PSP and DS, the occasional Vita, but rarely see any 3DSs for some reason.

I love iOS gaming but I can't stand some fair-weather freddy furiously swiping his screen when he's sitting next to me, annoying twat,

Man, where do some of you guys live in, I find that very hard to believe that people rarely see kids play on their little DS systems.

I see a lot of people in college play on the DS and sony machines too, probably because it's an art school.

Well, I'm in my mid-30's and I play my Vita on the train every day. I don't often where a suit, but I'm typically business casual. There are always a few people playing on their phones, but rarely do I see anyone else on portable gaming device (unfortunately).

There must be some people at my office with the Vita though as I always get a few Near encounters when I'm working.

Well, I see my son playing his 3DS all the time. ;-)

I rarely see it either, apart from on smartphones.

A lot of it is to do with smartphones being way better entertainment devices than phones of the past. People get caught up in how inferior smartphones are for gaming itself, but I don't think it's just about that. When you had a phone that only did calls and texts, it offered nothing in terms of "time killing potential". I had the original Gameboy because it gave me something to do when I was out and about. My phone did fuck all and I had no other devices that I could take with me to keep me entertained. So even if you couldn't play games on a current smartphone, the fact that you can watch movies, listen to music, browse the web, go on Facebook etc. means that it would still affect handheld sales because that device is now the "portable time killer" for the person that isn't a huge gamer. The fact that smartphones do play games only makes that worse.

Working in a doctor's office, I always see kids with 3DSes. Never seen a grown up playing on a handheld while waiting for the doctor though.

Either way I get at least a couple of streetpasses daily.

I've seen it once this year so far, I commute every morning and night, and play my 3DS on that commute. A year into 3DS launch I would street pass a lot of people, now I barely have passed 5 people.

Would it not be possible to make a Vita where you pop the screen part of it out and it's a phone? So the controls are like a frame that the screen part drops into? I would buy a device like that for sure as it kills 2 birds with 1 stone.

Browsing neogaf on my phone kills my non fully charged battery before I get home after one class. I couldnt imagine playing a game on it.

My honest opinion? A mix of phones becoming ubiquitous, the difficulty/hassle of carrying an extra device, and the subtle, but continuing sense of public shame people tend to feel while gaming in public. These reasons are the things currently holding me back from getting a Vita.

I see 3DS/DS pop up a lot more often on the trains. Few PSP's here and there. Not a lot of PSV's though. :(

PLENTY of iPhone and Android gaming going on too.

I think he is just using common sense.

I will admit, I've really been getting into games on iOS lately. Hell, I bought Luigi's Mansion 2 the day it came out, and haven't played a minute of it.

Part of the problem is that I've been busy, and the only chance I have to play portable games is during breaks at work, and I don't want to lug my 3DS with me to work.

Only time I see them is near bustops close-by the local engineering university.

I hate supporting a stereotype, but there's a high correlation between socially-inept individuals and portable systems. At least from what I've seen.

You know, I can buy that. With a phone, there's an expectation of some sort of inherent social interaction, even if they're just gaming on it. Whereas with a portable system, it's more like shutting out the world and disappearing into a video game.

I get streetpasses on the regular. Maybe I'm just lucky though.

I do know that one of the older female cashiers at the supermarket plays wipeout on vita during her breaks. haha

I see people game on the bus every once in a while, they're usually teenagers, but most rather just browse on their phones instead or message their friends.

I see children or kids in their early teens play the DS at restaurants all the time.

I've seen young adults or adults playing games on the bus every once in a while, don't know what they're playing though.

Just spent a month in Japan. 3DS' are everywhere, PSP's are everywhere. I saw one Vita :(

I should also mention I spend an 1.5 hours on the train everyday for work and in 6 months I have only seen one Vita. (thats in Sydney though)

I've seen some 3DS's at my university. There was a guy playing pokemon before class and a group of kids behind me definitely were making jokes about him for it. I've seen more people running emulators during class than anything as far as gaming goes.

Playing my vita on the subway one morning a dude stood right next to me playong his... To this day i regret not talking to him.

It was the only othe vita ive seen in public besides my own

I see lots of portable systems at sit-down restaurants, like IHOP. Lots of families waiting to be served and kids playing DSes to pass the time.

I've seen a couple of DS's out in the wild, but I have never ever once seen a single Vita :( I think I'm the only one in Ohio who owns one.

I play my vita at home and hotels on the road. I will sometimes play it on the plane to Europe and back since pretty much every seat has USB ports and I have seen pretty much every movie in the seat back twice now.

I did bust out the 3DSXL at the coffee house a few weeks ago because I am in my 40s, on vacation, and don't give a shit what people think.

Im terribly paranoid my vita will get stolen...only take it outside on long trips

everyone everywhere is holding a phone worth more than your vita
live free

edit: I catch the train everyday, never seen a DS, saw a vita once but it was a hipster using it for music. Rarely see anyone play phone games. I play 3DS/Vita everyday on the train like some sort of oddball :/

Brought my PSP and now my Vita to work everyday. And even before that, was using the PSP as a MP3 player after my MiniDisc unit died so NOBODY saw it. Lost a Memory Stick once, but had everything backed up thankfully. Know of two other people with a Vita at work, but outside some monthly mini-cons, mostly phones and some nature of DS and the odd PSP. No Vitahz! :(

There IS apparently a double standard on portable game consoles being kiddy though. I throw it right back at them when they fiddle with their phones or iPads for non-communication purposes. ;)

I see very few, here in Vancouver. Maybe every month ill see someone in their 20s playing a 3DS or a Vita.

I work on a college campus and only recently started bringing my 3DS with me as I hadn't really played it much for quite awhile. I usually get a few street passes during the walk to and from my car (1 mile each way) and during lunch. Haven't seen too many people playing them though. I'm sure I've seen at least a few other people with Vitas before but nothing really stands out.

I very, very rarely game in my phone these days. Just GAF, Twitter and Instagram primarily. Anecdotally it seems like gaming on iOS is declining a bit -- kind of aligns with the decline of Draw Something.

I have seen several 3DS's. Used to see PSPs back in the day but have never seen a Vita in public (I'll be shocked if I ever see it here to be honest). Honestly, the future of handhelds in the West is pretty bleak aside from the 3DS. Here's hoping it at least survives.

I pull my Vita or 3DS out at home (obviously), in the car, or if I'm traveling. Sitting in the park, on a bus, or walking with it outside are things I will never EVER do. I'm just very cautious and weary about carrying them around because I'm paranoid someone will try to steal, or snatch it from me. The Vita is one expensive device so I don't want to lose it, also you put so much crap on the Vita that almost all your info is in it. If someone steals your Vita, you might as well give them your wallet and phone too lol.

I may be overreacting but this is just my pet-peeve because I hate to lose things that were hard for me to obtain. A $200 and $350 (got the First Edition Vita Bundle) system that took me 4 months to get, yeah I care about it.

Public transports. I commute to work by train and make an abusive use of my Vita and 3ds there. I even came across other people with a Vita too, which is kind of a miracle of it's own (3ds prevails). And I am referring to adults here. I must admit that much more are carrying their tablets around though (watching series and movies)

I've seen multiple instances of mobile gaming going on at my university, actually. It's quite common to see someone sitting with an iPad in their lap, as they play puzzle games or social games. Also, I've seen quite a few 3DS's, usually in the cafeteria and the computer labs. Just the other day the guy at a nearby computer had his 3DS in front of him while he was working on a paper. Couldn't remember what game was being played, though. Oh yeah, a couple PSPs were sighted while in between classes as well.

And while it doesn't count as "mobile" gaming, people are playing games via their laptops in the study lounges, so...yeah.
