Boring, yes. Also, the page loads faster, posts are more compact. Somewhat important on 100 posts per page viewing mode. No avatars generally means I won't treat anyone's opinion differently just because I recognize the avatar. Sn00zer is a lost cause because he's so prolific, and site staff have differently colored usernames, and sometimes tags stand out.

I tried it for an hour yesterday, but everything felt so lifeless. For me, half the fun of GAF lies in its diversity. Go to an anime forum and almost everything is an anime avatar; go to a sports forum and they're all sports avatars; etc. That still happens in the community threads to an extent, but the freedom, if you will, to run with whatever keeps it interesting, especially when it ends up being iconic.

This is still possible with avatars, at least for me. I read every post in the threads I go into and I don't make a point of the person's avatar (even if I recognize them) until the post makes it relevant.

Also, I remember someone complaining about my avatar's nose, so I can't possibly change it now. The nose stays. Just for them.

I do recognize a lot of people by their usernames since I turn avatars off for Mobile GAF. Also once upon a time I used to frequent the GAF Plug.DJ and know most of the people there. I should start going in there again

I do this too. I look at the avatar and go "oh it's Salsa", or... "Oh, It's Grief" but it sucks when someone who's avatar I'm really familiar with changes it and suddenly I have that adjustment period again.

Or when someone has almost my same avatar so I have to change it up so I don't get confused whenever I see their posts.

I toggle images on/off in Firefox from time to time and see this. In fact I'd say I remember users more by handle than avatar, but that's probably due to spending the time making a lot of them, so it's like 'ahh, mhs004, I remember making something for them.'

Changed my name four or five times and my avatar even more so.

Name changes were because lol, drunk. And the avatars get mixed up depending on mood. I do however miss my old name Infinite Ammo and groovy 8-bit Urdnot Wrex avatar.

Wish I stuck with it now, was most known by that.
