I disable avatars....am I just weird or does other GAFfers do this?

Not weird. I disable avatars and pictures when I'm on mobileGAF (which is like 95% of the time).

It forces you to remember usernames.

I do not change my avatar. Ever. I really like it, for one, and it does help to let people remember who I am.

I've changed mine 4 or 5 times since I joined. I kinda want to change again but I can't find anything I'd like to use.

I do not fully change my avatar, I only tweak it a bit to reflect what is going on or if I need a slight change of style. I usually recognise most Gaffers by avatars so fully changing avatars makes it harder to recognise them when posting, although I recognise some of the names of posters in threads who change their avatars regularly, or Gaffers who are regular posters in communities that I visit regularly. I would prefer them not to, just for simplicity.

Also having a standout or unique avatar helps to differentiate yourself amongst the thousands of avatars, so it helps if you do not choose a popular or generic image (or no image at all).

I can't help but change mine every once in a small while. But this time, I think it could stick for pretty much ever since I'm happier with it than any previous one I've had. Then again, I don't think I'm much of an influence here so I don't think it even matters in my case.

I used to use a fairly recognizable Hades avatar. Only after I swapped from it did I realize that someone else was using a variation of it.

I recognize around 20 people by their nicknames and I can connect certain posts to them. So that's no problem with changing avatars.

It's easier to remember an image than a username. I only remember usernames if it's something unique like crazy buttocks on a train or I see your name often like on the jdrama topic since I often post there.

I'm only keeping this because I was finally avatar quoted with it. Else I would probably change it to one of my favorite recent movie I saw.

This current one seems like it might stick but I think the color scheme makes it fade into the page. Might not be that much better than having no icon.

I don't post often enough to be recognizable though.

I had blocked avatars back when we still had animated avatars here. Those things were incredibly annoying.
Eventually turned them back on, but disabled animated images in my browser settings.

Even still I tend to ignore them most of the time.
