• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

I played it for the plot: Games this gen that has a solid story beginning to end.

It's strange how many reponses here are "X was great! ... until the end". I wonder why that is? Why are there so few Keyser Söze moments? Is it because, with the increased scale of games vs Movies, you can't have a T-Rex-Bursting-Through-the-Wall-and-eating-the-Raptor moment, because it seems to be blowing your load too quick for a 12 hour game?

Then again, there's a very similar moment at the end of Portal 2 that works incredibly well...

A lot of people failing to make this distinction in this thread.

Whilst a distinction can be made, in the context of this thread, should that distinction be made? A world that's created can tell you a lot of what's going on - story is about far more than dialogue and plot points. Rapture tells you the story of a society that's undergone a massive change just using the visuals - there could be no dialogue whatsoever, and that would still be the case. I don't think that should be ignored when looking at a games overall "story".

It's because the vast majority of people don't actually play a game through the credits so not a lot of development goes into the ending when there are many more important things to focus on.

I suppose you are right. But then again, the story of Rapture also happens to be the story of Bioshock the game. It does a great job with its setting showing you what happened but I also happen to dislike the audio diary part of the story. It is just a weak way to present the story for me. Not sure how I would have done it but these logs all spread around are a bit incongruous with the excellent story-telling of the environment itself.

Uncharted 1.

We can complain about the shooting, about the boss, etc... but if you take out the action, look the plot and dialogs and you'll enjoy a 80's adventure movie. A good one. The "what is El Dorado really" plot is much better than, for example, the one of Romancing the Stone.

Good call on Uncharted, really loved it. I would put U3 on here but I believe they rushed the ending and the cast were busy with other projects which hurt U3 a bit unfortunately.

Uncharted
Catherine
Heavy Rain
MGS4

Metal Gear Solid 4

Miles ahead of everything else in the pack. No other game had a quarter of the profound impact the story of that game had on me.

I hate to be 'that guy' but I sincerely believe that the reason people don't appreciate it is because they didn't realize what the real story was about. Figure it out, and it's pretty awesome and one of the best this gen.

How can this thread be three pages long and everyone thus far has failed to mention Deus Ex; Human Revolution!? It has a well written plot where characters develop and you either grow to care for or dislike them, has a greatly realized setting and issues that stem from the political and social climate of today. Its themes of tranhumanism and the struggle to be free in the face of governmental control just struck a chord with me. It actually seems like a satire for race relations in America during various parts of its history whether it be from civil rights, suffrage, lgbt rights or the situation with immigration/Hispanic population. In addition to that theres also the race/superpower struggle occurring between America and China, not to mention the economic collapse that effects the powerful and impoverished. Wish more games were like it and made players think.

HR is right there at the top for my personal GOTY, and I did love everything you mentioned, but I didn't really like how they handled the ending.

i love what the designers did with the story in 999, but i don't know if i could call it solid from beginning to end. i enjoyed portal 2 a lot though.

I don't really remember the plot to Uncharted that well, but I would say that "from beginning to end" may be called into question when the
supernatural aspect comes into play with the creatures attacking you. It kind of felt like THIS IS A VIDEO GAME
.

Heavy Rain

The whole game was a movie-quality experience. Having (some) influence over the plot was awesome too... it really made you feel like you had choices instead of experiencing it the one way the dev wanted.

Heavy Rain
Heavenly Sword
Red Dead Redemption

Nothing I've played fits the bill of being completely solid, story-wise from beginning to end though. Every one of them stumbles at some point, but they all kept me engaged with the characters.

A lot of games I play going in knowing there's a shit story that I would probably enjoy. It's just my love for the ludicrous way JRPGs explain everything. I guess I'm like those people who like B grade movies.

But for a solid story that actually felt compelling and made me wanted to find out more I say Portal 2.

I thought the original idea for Alan Wake, plus the open world format, sounded much more interesting.

Alan Wake is a bestselling horror writer. Early on in his career, his fiancée Alice, was his muse. When he'd first met her, he had started to see strange dreams which he used as material for his first book. The book was a big success. It was a dream come true.

But then Wake's fiancée vanished without a trace. Wake was devastated. After that, he couldn't write anymore. His dreams stopped and he began to suffer from insomnia.

At the beginning of the game, Wake travels to a sleep clinic to seek treatment for his condition. The secluded clinic is located near the small town of Bright Falls, Washington, far away from the stressful urban lifestyle. Receiving treatment at the clinic, Wake is able to sleep again. At the clinic, he meets a mysterious woman who is the very image of his missing fiancée, uncannily so. At once, his dreams return, this time as terrible nightmares. Wake begins to write again: a new book based on those nightmares.

But something is horribly, horribly wrong.

Impossibly, the town of Bright Falls starts to change to something awful that bears a close resemblance to Wake's new book. Wake ends up fighting for his life with a gun and a flashlight in his hands, trying to understand what's happening.

Deus Ex: HR was probably the most disappointing attempt at storytelling and doing anything with its themes. Transhumanism and the usual cyberpunk themes were completely dropped to the ground - Not much was done with Jensen's transformation. Furthermore, the antagonists are severely underdeveloped (they just show up and die without any idea who or what they are). Meanwhile, the "ending" is a horrible mess, indicative of the designers rushing it and thinking they need to have some sort of "decision" for the player, when in fact every single one of these decisions are completely counter-intuitive. There's not one ending that makes sense in terms of what Jensen has been doing the entire game.

I am sorry, but DX:HR is far from a good example of storytelling - it just seemed like they had different teams doing different areas with a little bit of story, without having any consistency or red thread that kept the areas together. The E3 2010 trailer was much more interesting and appealing story-wise than what we ended up getting.

I can't take anybody that lists Heavy Rain with all of it's plotholes or God of War with Kratos being nothing but a screaming three year old in a hulking man's body, seriously.

I've had enough of your anti-Romancing the Stone rhetoric.

Kratos comment isn't true. He plays out like your typical villain. Bent on destroying anything in his way for revenge. Refreshing compared to always being the plucky hero.

I haven't played the PSP version and there are changes from the original game but assuming they haven't changed the story, the PSP Tactics Ogre LUCT game of this gen has a solid story.

Mass Effect too.

And I liked Bioshock's story as well.

And Witcher, Witcher 2 too.

I guess they wanted to stay faithful to the original Deus Ex in that respect.

Mass Effect for me

I agree. I find Heavy Rain very overrated.

Btw, the story in Too Human wasn't too bad...

Three or so plot holes (most of which were explained in an optional video interview) don't mean much if the story has an emotional influence on you.

Heavy Rain's dark, brooding atmosphere was intriguing up to when they unveiled the killer, in my opinion.

Most of the time it is because dev have to leave the ending open for a possible sequel in case the game sells well.

Enslaved was great, though the ending was a bit... strange. But overall the interactions between the two leads were quite well done.

Portal 2 is obvious I guess.

Uncharted 2 and 3? Uncharted 1 had that stupid fucking twist at the end, so that doesn't count. Uncharted 2 had one too, but it was somehow less obnoxious. Uncharted 3 developed the characters more, which I liked.

Zelda...? The story was pretty decent, even if it didn't connect as much / at all to the other games like I would have liked.

Bioshock 2 is a much better story for me than the original, and probably my favourite this gen.

Dead Space was great too, but I think DS2 dropped a few balls on the story side.

I enjoyed the Modern Warfare story lines from the first till the last. I was satisfied with the end of the game and I thought it had a good conclusion.

Super Paper Mario. I was wow'd by the story, completely.

Alan Wake's plot was more foreshadowed than a freakin' Harry Potter book and what story I got felt like it was trying way to hard to pretend to me it was grand scale mind blowing stuff when it was pretty much watered down jr high suspension horror.

Games I played for the plot are in short supply really since most have failed to impress. Bioshock felt right due to the atmosphere, but it didn't really fill me with suspense with twists and turns to the plot until the one big twist at the end we all know of.

Assassin's Creed's games however are topping my charts for story. I love history, art history, and its twisted plot surrounding them. Great series of games.

Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. Nothing else from this generation even comes close to that level of sustained excellence. Everything from the characters, to the setting, to their interactions is strong, and the true ending of that game will blow your mind. I really believe that it is one of the greatest games ever made.

Trials and Tribulations is pretty strong, too. It works best as a culmination to the Phoenix Wright saga, though, so I would caution people against playing it without having played the first two games first.

I liked Tales of Graces plot. The beginning part that ive seen so much said about (friendship pact) is more about letting us get to know the characters before one of the most emotional scenes I've seen in a jrpg. A little later it reminded me heavily of Final Fantasy IV
get to the crystals before the crazy possessed guy does

And the ending is great and not how I expected it to end.

Ghost Trick's story was awesome from beginning to end.

The same can be said about both Zelda Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword.

Dead Rising 1 and 2 as well as the recent Off the Record had pretty good stories, too, which weren't interrupted that often (in comparison to most first person shooters).

Metal Gear Solid 4 gets a mention, because the game consists of 80% cutscenes anyway.
Sadly everything turns to shit after the "fake" credits.

Yup, had me hooked all the way through, of course people will disagree (as has already happened in here) but for me, it was so good.
