I really wish Valve would publish and secure AAA exclusive content for Steam

One of the biggest issues people have with Valve is that they don't really make games themselves anymore. Sure they release one or two from time to time, but they don't actively publish and build/expand studios to create exclusive content for Steam. Obviously everyone understand they don't NEED to do this.. but if their goal is to build up a hardware base, then having some exclusive big AAA titles to show off would build excitement.

Valve has a lot of money and could surely build and acquire some teams to make great high quality games for their platform. It would be amazing for Valve to publish a new AAA RPG IP, or other types of single player games alongside their MP games. They have all the data from the store which shows exactly what types of SP games sell best on Steam.



There's some rumors out there that Half Life 3 or whatever it ends up being called could launch alongside the Steam Machine. That would obviously be an incredible title to launch with. Valve publishing exclusive titles which target the hardware would go a long way in advertising and selling it. It would be nice to see Valve build and curate some higher quality games and new IPs exclusive to their platform to bring up the excitement. It will probably never happen, which sucks, but they need to start treating Steam like the incredible platform it is and take it to the next level with exclusive bangers.

That's my wish anyway lmao.

Edit: I don't mean exclusive Steam Machine games.. I mean exclusive games to Steam which could be used to generate excitement for the Steam Machine (and other Valve hardware)

Valve doesn't do AAA games anymore. Only GAAS. Pretty obvious Valve's entire strategy is to get users to eventually play their GAAS games. You don't need to spend $100M on AAA games for that.

That is why Steam is winning, they are embracing GAAS more than the other guys. And Free MP.

No thanks, artificially limiting where a game can be played is bad.

They should put maximum focus into the store itself, better to have a store for thousands of games that isnt shit rather than take away games from others.

Exclusives arent just bad when it's the ones we dont like doing them. Their games being exclusive is obviously fine. Them publishing games in exchange for exclusivity isnt any better than EGS doing it. So no thanks.

- Steam Machine is just mid-range at best standard hardware, there is barely anything to "Target"
- Valve is less interested in making a mass market hardware device than the people on this forum it seems
- Their goal is to compliment their big money maker, Steam itself, not try to boost a hardware platform they'll probably never produce beyond 1-2 million units a year of at best

It's not really that, Gabe just doesn't really want to run a big company. He likes his cushy company that's been 200-400 people. They don't use a lot of outside contractors even. They have their own motion capture studio, audio recording studio, it's just the nature of the company he wants to run.

It's to some extent disappointing, it's a lot of money to hoard to not produce a lot of games for gamers, but it is what it is.
 
Why are people so hung up on exclusives ? Are they so insecure about thier platform's future that they need to deny stuff to people outside of it in order to secure its survival ?

Its so fucking weak.
 
I like that they nurture projects internally with a team of staff that enjoy working in their own little groups on projects.

I honestly think if steam / valve were to do this they'd probably just fund some games kinda behind closed doors and not want to make a big song and dance about it, as long as the game launched day one on steam kinda thing.
 
Can't say that any of this bothers me. We get almost all the games, we get to keep them forever, we get mods, and we get the best version. And Valve has the best store on any platform. Don't care at all if they're not making games themselves or getting exclusives.

Besides, Steam has a gazillion exclusives. Valve doesn;t even have to pay for them. They just get them by virtue of being the best store on the best platform for gaming.

Fuck PC store-specific exclusives, whether they be from Epic, Valve or whoever. Every game should be on all stores and available to buy on third party stores.
 
Why? We can almost say that Valve is not even a gaming company anymore, but a computer gaming distribution platform (and SO GOOD and the DE FACTO distribution platform in that regard that zealots almost beg that a game is releated there).

They can make games and sell them on Steam only, they do in fact.
But this isn't why Steam is popular (as can be seen by countless examples of exclusive games doing jack shit for other platforms).
And nowhere in their strategy with Steam is the mythical "build up a hardware base" point present.
Steam is not a console.

Honestly, I want to know what an exclusive Valve game would look like. They have the money, resources, a platform and now they have their own hardware.

I realize that now. But I mean if they are going to fund the games, why would they put them on other platforms? They literally have hardware coming out and they're trying to build up and install base for SteamOS.

You seemed to be implying they should make it exclusive to their hardware.

Nobdoy really wants that as Steam Machine is just a budget niche device.

Genuinely curious, what is not to like about Steam? I like GoG too and buy many games there but Steam has the best features of any platform by a country mile. Workshop, access on multiple devices, free online and cloud saves, enormous library, etc.

Well, the big difference is that Valve isn't a console maker. They're not going to have to figure out an incentive to get people to buy a PC 2 in another few years. PC games are forever, as long as there are people figuring out how to keep them running.

Steam has all kinds of features for developers that Valve didn't have to include, like free multiplayer matchmaking. It's been great for all of gaming, because it encourages other platform holders to do the same, like how recently Microsoft has been copying Steam features as fast as they can

What they need to do is to compete with Unreal Engine. They used to do this and should return to it. They have data on system specs and could give indie devs something far better optimized for pc only development than unreal does.

Framing it as having anything to do with Steam Machine, a niche product, is what threw people off.

Well obviously if they're going to release games they're going to make sure it runs on the hardware they're trying to sell. That's all I meant by that. Obviously it wouldn't be a "Steam Machine Exclusive" lol.

I never said it was the same thing as selling a console. SteamOS is clearly a platform they are building and their hardware releases support in building up that platform. They're not doing all this just for it to remain irrelevant. Thus why I mentioned it at all in this thread. It's something they could tie a launch into to help sell the device. HL3 launching at the same time as Steam Machine and getting that publicity as "HL3 running on the Steam Machine" does a lot to garner excitement for the device.

They are not selling h/w. Their h/w sales are less than a spec in overall PC h/w sales, and they'd be completely irrelevant if they'd try to lock themselves to their own h/w.

Industry is in the gutter and funding is getting pulled left right and centre. We don't need more platform features. We need private companies like Valve who's whole shtick is they do things for the greater good of the industry and the industry could really do with a bit of cushioning with the wasted cash they're sitting on

No I'm not. I even give the example of HL3 being a title that was rumored to launch alongside the Steam Machine. "Valve publishing exclusive titles which target the hardware" doesn't (or at least didn't in my mind) mean exclusive to Steam Machine... but rather games exclusive to Steam which are designed to work well with the hardware.

My bad if that's the impression people had. Fuck no I would never want Valve to make exclusive Steam Machine games LOL.. That didn't even cross my mind. All I'm saying is exclusive games to Steam which target the device and could be used to generate excitement for it.

I'm not gonna say no to Half Life 3 if they wanna make it, but it's not really urgent imo. Every big AAA PC game will already be coming to the Steam Machine, even if it's through a Proton layer or whatever, and Half Life 3 would also be on PC. There's no such thing as a Steam Machine exclusive, and there never will be.

So what's the selling point of the Steam Machine? I think the idea behind the Steam Machine is to streamline the experience for people who want a more console-like way to play PC games, and the bigger goal for SteamOS is to eventually provide an alternative to Windows for gaming. I don't think they expect to sell Playstation 5 or Switch numbers, and they don't really need to. That's how I see it, anyway.
