I stopped buying games because of PS+

Does anyone else have this feeling of, "Better enjoy it while I can, 'cause this shit is not gonna last."? I mean, how far can they keep this up?

There's no reason for it to end. As Netflix is to film studios, it's an added source of revenue, something developers and publishers understand and will remain happy to support. The fact that it exists is a sign of a maturing industry. While some people will simply not buy games and remain content with Plus, many others will buy games with Plus discounts they otherwise would not have purchased, so it probably balances out nicely. The more subscribers there are, the better the terms Sony can negotiate, the better the deals they offer, etc.

I'll buy games that I want to keep or if there is a good sale on.
PS+ gives me games I wouldn't actually buy in the first place so it actually works better for me. I would never have bought Sleeping Dogs but after trying it, I'm quite enjoying it and even bought some DLC which I think is the intention of some publishers.

Hey, if you're the type who is willing to wait a year to play a game, then PS+ could well be the one thing that you need. Then again, if you're that type of person, you're not a particularly valuable customer to Sony anyway. PS+ is a good way to derive revenue from you.

Don't get me wrong, I liked it too and I think it's a great deal, but if you're the sort that likes to play games in the first few months of their release, there's a good chance you'll already have played what's on offer on PS+ for any given month.

Eh I've found waiting 6 months or a year, you get games for dirt cheap.

Aside from a few big launches, I wait for all my games now. I usually don't have much time to play either, so it helps me to wait.

I think I picked up red dead redemption complete edition with all the dlc for less than $12 in November of last year.

Even a month or two and the games drop nearly $20+ etc.

I think PS+ will be changed for ps4. If it still allows for the base psn to play multiplayer for free, I could see ps+ being the upper tier service.

Sleeping Dogs was on there after two or three months, and holiday season months, when backlogs are at their peak and the second tier stuff is always on the backburner.

I used to say I'd be upset if I bought something and it turned up free on PS+ afterwards...but it has been such an insane value I don't think I could be mad at that...

I haven't bought a Vita game since Plus started in the handheld. I dint intend to buy any either, Plus gives me enough games to play that it's not really a issue.

Plus on PS3 is wasted on me though due to my heavy purchasing of content in the past, if/when they announce it PS4, I'll probably reign in future purchases.

EU PS+ Seems to be practically headlined by SE/Eidos. It's a great thing because a lot of Eidos' Games have been fantastic so far. Hitman Absolution, Sleeping Dogs, Deus Ex, Just Cause 2. I'm probably missing a couple. It's only a matter of time before Tomb Raider goes up on it I imagine. I can't remember what my original point was. Oh yeah, something about game diversity. You're a very fortunate gamer if PS+ sees to all your gaming needs :) Great service. I'd almost prefer it to be split up into different genre subscriptions though, that way it could cater to a wider audience for thsoe who find the base package doesn't meet their needs, like a few people in this thread.

I have a terrible problem and keep buying games day 1 :[ for some reason, I think of games like figures and think 'oh no they'll run out!'

They NEVER run out. And then when I'm really bored and nothing's out soon, I've got nothing to do.

My backlog due to me trophy whoring and PS+
Which is a backlog onto itself...
Which created a backlog for Discounted DD titles for the PS3
Which created a backlog for Vita games

BACKLOG! R' Us Me

=/

Too much shit to play through

I have PS+ till 2017 in NA and have a free EU account going by overlapping freebee EU PS+ codes since November...

Fuck my life!

I'll be getting PS4 Day 1... Backlog Ahoy! for that too

Amateur hour mate. That backlog isn't even in the 100s.

definitely allows me to play LOTS of games that i would otherwise skip over.

i still buy the games i know i want 100%...

also it's made me buy more games due to the great discounts

Between GameFly and Plus I've been covered on 1. Huge new releases I want to play the week they come out (Gamefly), and 2. Games I didn't rent from GameFly that look interesting (Plus).

I haven't bought a new $59.99 game in years and I play everything.

When i first got ps+ i stopped buying games but with all the sales they've had recently ive been buying games. Those sales are good incentives, hope they keep it up.

Meh, the idea that the games are rented, and not owned by me, is what basically stops me from becoming a PS+ member.

It's great value, maybe, but it is more of a principle of the matter for me.

Nope. Sleeping Dogs came out in August 2012 and it hit PS+ in February 2013. Not a year, but that's a 6 month gap. I do however agree that it is great for second tier games you'd otherwise not pick up.

Your paying a small price for a huge amount of experience, your not paying to own anything.

It's excellent IMO.

I like PS+ but I won't stop buying games that interest me. I see it as a rental service. I pay a yearly fee and get games to play in return. When my sub ends, that's that. Some games I bought might be on the service one day, but that's not an issue for me.

I have pretty much stopped buying DL games because of it. After having several games go free after I bought them at a discount, I just quit adding money my PSN wallet. I'm not angry about it, its just that its almost the same whether I "own" it or not.

My bigger problem is finishing my + backlog while also trying to finish my retail backlog to sell most of it off before november. I'm not going to play every game on there, but there are some big ones I haven't even started.

That's um, kinda the point of PS+?

It was to qualify the rest of the sentence which was basically that the longer you you use it, the more you depend on it and the bigger a worry it can be if you're not intending on being a permanent subscriber. Entire chunks of the library would vanish. You don't want that, you are tied. It's a good system, but nowhere near traditional or as secure in principle anyway.

Are you going to keep paying ps+ when the offering becomes less during PS4 and PS3 releases dry out, you feel you don't need it now...but wait, you can't go back to your old games on PS3 otherwise, so you keep paying. [Something not everyone considers.]

As one possible scenario. I like to not rely on it too much. But I know it is so good that many people are happy to and I can't blame them. I'm more paranoid and like some ownership, less subscriptions etc. Not that I don't get one every now and then to try some new games, play some old ones and for the discounts.

Since I got PS+ I have been buying more games than ever. The sales are so good and I'm willing to take more risks when purchasing because if I don't like a game it was cheap and I have a huge PS+ backlog to turn to at any time.

I haven't stopped, but I'm more cautious. I'll still buy big retail releases. I can't wait 6+months for them to be free. I only purchase PSN games if they're discounted (with the exception of BloodDragon and Terraria).

I love PS+. But, to be honest. The biggest value are the discounts. The games I've gotten for free are ALL games I considered, but ultimately passed on. I'm happy to have them for free though. As an early adopter of Vita, all those free games are lost on me because I own 90% of them :(

How does PS+ make money?

Well, we pay for it. We don't know subscriber numbers, but imagine one million subscribers at $50, that's $50,000,000 in revenue, or just over $4,000,000 a month. Provided their expenses each month are less than that, it'd be profitable. That's why more subscribers will equal better games.

I stopped buying games because of my PS3/360 backlog (as I vowed to not buy any new games till I got through it). So ever since that moment, I've been adding games to my "to-buy" list, some that I never got around to buying before, and some that newly released.

Due to the PS+, there are a good amount of games that are no longer on my to-buy list now. So yeah, in a sense it has also contributed to me not buying games anymore.

But anyways, when I finish with this backlog, I will buy games. Especially ones that I want to play near release. And there are quite a few on my to-buy list that have pretty much a 0% chance of coming on PS+.

Also, I tend to buy games that I really like from the Instant Game Collection anyways since I prefer a physical copy/don't want it tied to my subscription.

I try to clear out atleast one PS+ game a month before the next month rolls around but some of these games rewuire a lot of playtime (not that I am complaining). I have so many in my backlog and currently playing through Arkham City. However, with most of my retail games in storage I am reluctant to download some of the games to play that I own when the saves from retail to digital aren't compatible, eg; Demon's Souls and ICO/SotC. (yet to complete all three).

I stopped buying most games because of ps+

Only thing I bought recently is Monster Hunter and I bought Guacamelee yesterday cuz I just couldn't wait.(sooooo good). I was also gifted tomb raider but haven't touched it.

My backlog is so big that I can just wait for PS+ or prices to drop really low. Plus I'm over 200 hours in MH and haven't even played it in over a week.

games im some what interested in but not quite sure i dont buy until i get through other games i need to play at that point they are cheaper and i wouldnt buy them at full price anyway. Now with ps+ i hope they become free on ps+ before i get to that point and now with Plus i have even more games to get through so they get pushed back farther and really have a good chance at coming to ps+. Games that i really want like the last of us i will buy day 1. Thing is there are not that many games which i buy $60 brand new anyway, they have to be really good in order to do that.

PS+ is probably the best service that came out of this generation. I love it. Yet I can only wonder how it will work for Sony in long run. I don't want to buy games anymore for their systems. Newer and newer games are getting added to the service every month. Poor Hitman got like what less than 6 months on the market? The selection is solid from month to month growing your backlog to remarkable measures. Vita is getting 2 free games per month. I'm not sure how many good games will actually miss the service when all is said and done.

Now I understand that developers actually approve of their games appearing on the service and they think it's a good way to get new fans and free marketing but how will it work for them in long run? If PS4 gets similar PS+ output than PS3 and Vita it might be feasible to actually just wait until your PS+ backlog is sizeable until jumping in. It doesn't sound very healthy.

Thoughts please.

My thoughts are you stopped buying and are renting instead, and you don't make the rental selections but instead play whatever is given to you.

Sony has said members actually spend more on average than nonmembers. I'm sure that is a combination of discount offerings and increased engagement by having to log in every week to the store to register your purchases, plus a knock on effect of making multi-console users think of the ps3 as their primary system. Of course there will always be people who do spend less, but the overall trend appears very positive for Sony's bottom line.
