I don't really feel open world made elden ring made the 'souls series' a better game for me. The exploration was cool until you realize that most of the zones are pretty much structured the same with just a slightly different theme and doesn't do anything with it. You go, ride around, search for catacombs that have a loop design to where you hit a switch to open a door to get to a boss that's by the entrance, chariot dungeons, evergaols, some ruins with a staircase underground that houses a medallion, and maybe a unique dungeon or two. A lot of people may disagree, but I don't feel like the 'open world' made Elden Ring good. It was the unique areas like the town with the dancing ladies and some of the other unique environments but they were too spread apart with filler inbetween.
If the map was smaller but more dense in terms of unique dungeons, ala Volcano Manor, then I would be in love, but I feel like Elden Ring has a lot of filler. Due to the open world and the horse, the environments become generally less dangerous because you can just ride past most things. You lose the constant feeling of tension because you can get on your horse and ride away or fast travel.
I wouldn't mind another open world 'souls game', but there needs to be a lot more carefully crafted dungeons/towns.
