I think HBO's True Detective is overrated.

The show is about Marty and Rust, it was never about the case or any other character. Rust and Marty went from hating each other, well maybe just Marty (he couldn't stand Rust at the beginning) to full on bros at the end, and it was AWESOME.

The show is also superbly acted, shot and directed. It deserves all the praise it gets.

Yes.

Of course, everything is either best ever or worst ever. Very little middle ground.

Didn't realize "overrated" meant something is terrible.

overrated means it's not deserving of the praise it receives. In this case, the praise is deserved. I could be wrong (opinions and all that), but it sounds like this dude wants to break away from the pack and have a negative article about the show rather than be mixed in with all the positive reviews that'll be up tonight/tomorrow.

Not all characters are meant to be representations of real life individuals either. If that's what you think Rust or even Marty should be/are, jokes on you and you actually haven't been engaged in the series as well as you think you have.

That's true. But you said "terrible". Overrated could still mean a show is very good. Maybe not "THIS SHOW HAS NO FLAWS 10/10" but merely a 9/10 or w/e.

This show had me hooked from the first episode. As for Breaking Bad, I couldn't get past the first couple of episodes. I must've tried starting that series at least 5 times. I'll probably try again since it gets so much love.

Not at all. One of the better shows of recent memory on television.

And "mass hysteria"? What does that mean? I'm not sure why lots of people enjoying something equates to "hysteria".

If we're talking about hyperbolic fans, then I think people just need to learn to ignore that. Every single show in existence has those. There are people out there who think Two and a Half Men is the greatest achievement in modern TV. It means nothing and doesn't in any way make True Detective (or any other highly praised show) overrated nor does it make all of its fans "hysteric".

Like I said, if we're actually going to take those sorts of fans seriously then every single show, movie and book in history is overrated. All entertainment has its fanatics.

Well, to be fair, it almost seems as if the author doesn't even get the point of the show:

But the level of reverence for and devotion to “True Detective” seem out of proportion to the material. I mean, this isn’t “Twin Peaks.” The show is just another stylized serial-killer whodunit with a pair of oil-and-water detectives, right? Yes, it’s gussied up with Louisiana Gothicism, a classy title sequence, and existentialist notions, as McConaughey’s Rust Cohle natters on about how people “labor under the illusion of having a self” and about “our sentience just cycling through our lives like carts on a track.” And show creator Nic Pizzolatto has also thrown in a few obscure references and meta-nods for the smarties out there.

wut?

How I feel about this thread...

The best single season experience I've ever had the opportunity to see.

I kinda agree on this. I think the wire and breaking bad are the best shows ever.

But I don't know if either show had a One season from start to finish that was this strong.

Maybe the last season of breaking bad and 3rd or 4th season of wire...But still...this one season was just Beast all around.

remember the outcry over the article that called episode 4 overrated not 48 hours after it aired? this writer said "imma do one better."

Idk if True Detective is overrated, but I'd say lots of TV shows are underrated. It's a travesty Terriers wasn't given the love that True Detective got.

I don't think it's overrated. It does a lot of things really well, and has some very strong acting from the two leads. I also liked that it was a self contained story that ended in one season.
I only wish it was a bit longer.

No, I do not think it's overrated. This is coming from someone that is a TV buff, and have a deep love for dramas. But I suppose it depends on what you mean by "overrated". I think the one thing unique about this show, is that it's gotten a lot of praise right out the gate. Most TV shows take multiple seasons to finally catch on. Even shows that start out great, time allows people to become connected and digest things. But True Detective was pretty much loved right away. Critics love it. Fans fervently praise it.

So I totally get why some feel like the hype is being blown out of proportion. But honestly, even if you don't think this show is that great. The acting is amazing. The cinematography is great. The show has a lot style. Even if you ultimately felt the writing didn't live up to the overall premise of the show, or didn't care for it how all wrapped up, you can still understand why people love it. No? As far as WHY I think this show got as much praise as it did early on, is because..well the format of the show. It was basically shot like a film. It's not really episodic (at least in the traditional sense). And the story comes together at a faster pace. TV shows generally aren't made this made this way, and purposely structured for a longer format, so the build up to characters and themes are slower. The fact that people were able to fall in love with this show so quickly, is a testament to all the things they did right.

The only thing I don't like about True D is that it's so serious and brooding all the time that it doesn't have a human voice. Even in horrible circumstances there are light moments here and there and room for a laugh. True D is just grim and foreboding from minute one and there's never any let-up there.

A small knock on an otherwise fantastic show.

Haven't watched the last two episodes. Either way this is extremely premature and insane quite frankly. It's a very good show, doesn't need to be GOAT man, Christ.

Harrelson's performance is underrated though, I will agree.

Hopefully the last two episodes aren't disappointing :[

Jesus, I hate strawman shit like this. It's acclaimed, and people are loving it. That doesn't mean everyone thinks it's GOAT status.

What it is: hopefully a turning point for how prestige television is created in the States. Following a BBC model of tight, contained stories would be great and open up the field to more film talent biting on shows of this level.

Season 3 is pretty damn strong, but the Wire's quality is based on the whole story of a city and the institutions that overwhelm individuals. The narrative is only a means to an end, where as a miniseries like True Detective can afford to be concise.

last episode is kinda eh. but overall it was a good season. everything's the GOAT until the next year comes.

In all honesty, I don't think the show is getting enough praise. I think the writing, directing, cinematography, music, editing, and acting are all extremely top notch and blow every other TV show out of the water. Very few shows even come close to comparing, IMO. I really think it is all thanks to the singular writer and director. Having one of each allows for a more singular focus, and far more stylistic choices.

That being said, I can understand how it isn't for everyone. True Detective is just one of those things just does everything right for me.

Don't blame True Detective for the internet's hyperbole problem. Should be common knowledge by now that the internet rates things on a GOAT or shit scale.

The first season was so strong I'm actually worried about them following it up with something different but good in its own right.

I would agree with this. Its gotten a lot of hype because of the mystery. Now that the show is over we'll see if it gets the recognition it deserves...

"Good" and "bad" can be largely qualified, but "overrated" and "underrated" are such subjective appellations that I don't even know what it really means. You're telling me that people who are not you, with tastes and interests that are not your own, like something more than you do?

"It's good, but it's not that good. It's overrated."
"Nah, I know what I like and I think I rate it just right."
"No, you're wrong."
"Oh."

For me the show just really clicked. It's so rare that a show seems to hit all the notes perfectly. The writing was suburb, editing was downright amazing, cinematography, and music were all just spot on. There have only been a very short few of them that I felt like I couldn't blink for fear of missing something.

We are all entitled to our opinions though. Meh.

I'm just glad a dialog heavy show with a molasses pace and very few set pieces was a sweeping success with viewers. That's definitely a step in the right direction for American viewers.

Time is a flat circle. The show just ended, but its also been off the air for years.

Actually, time is a flat circle, because trolling is something that is a never ending occurrence. There will always be that individual willing to put their name out there in the sake of "clicks" to rile people up and make a name for themselves. It has happened with True Detective, it will happen with your favorite show, movie, book, game, etc. It's an unending loop.
