I think HBO's True Detective is overrated.

I think its a good show and I like watching it.

Actually, time is a flat circle, because trolling is something that is a never ending occurrence. There will always be that individual willing to put their name out there in the sake of "clicks" to rile people up and make a name for themselves. It has happened with True Detective, it will happen with your favorite show, movie, book, game, etc. It's an unending loop.

hehe

So far this show is on the same level as Hannibal. Both are good, but they can be so dull at times, that your brain goes into a coma, but then it wakes up when the good bits happen.

I don't see the inherent value in a character that "seems like he could actually exist."

I think the show is very good and so are the performances, but man it gets my fucking goat when people use "reslistic" as some bullshit metric to measure anything in filmmkaking.

That's what I enjoyed most about the show. The characters were theatre-like, I felt.

I could totally roll with everything the show was doing when it seemed like we were getting twisted perspectives on what really happened, but everything we've seen is how it really went down, apparently; the thought we're supposed to take Cohle seriously is an unreasonable demand on the audience tbh.

What is the point of arguing if something is overrated anyways?

It's not you trying to convince someone why you don't like a show. It's not someone else trying to convince you why they like the show. It's you trying to tell someone they're wrong for liking something.

I disagree with this and you are an idiot for not agreeing with me. I will say this over and over again until you are swayed to subscribe to my viewpoint.

Because if someone just said "I don't like True Detective" then it's not trying to get a rise out of anyone and is easily ignored.

Overrated has no real meaning. All it boils down to is that someone doesn't like something as much as they perceive everyone else does. If you're not in love with Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Wire, or True Detective then in your mind they are overrated. Heck even if you are in love with them but prefer a less celebrated show (like The Shield or something) then you will think so and so is overrated.

It's a term that inherently is looking for an argument and assumes that one's own opinion is more objective than everyone else's.

Pretty much. I've done what I can to move away from the word and the misuse of it.

Heh, I think the show was pretty good, not great, but good enough. Don't see the point of this thread though. Especially when the OP ran away without replying with any argument :P

Nothing good can happen when you throw in:

Not to throw cold water on NeoGAF's rabid True Detective fanbase, but I'm in full agreement with Matt Gilbert. There are shows more deserving of mass hysteria.

All this article did was convince me to check the show out; sounds like it is right up my alley and I need something like it now that Breaking Bad is over. I'm still looking forward to Mad Men and GoT, but it's just not the same.

People are calling this the best show ever.

Ever!!

It was okay. Elevated by the performances. Nowhere near best show in the history of the medium.

we always have one of these stupid threads after a finale hits.

in a week from now, we'll have the, "is True Detective the greatest show of all time?" Or something along those lines. Then it'll become full on tv show wars, where some gafers start waving their dick, and acting like they should be writing screenplays for the entertainment business.

it is not overrated, and even if those said shows still aired.. i'd still be invested in this show. it's well made and thought out, from beginning to end. that whole argument about marty is bullshit. yeah he was human as fuck, but we eventually saw that in all the leads. not to mention.. a character like walter white could never exist, but i guess since he was "human" he was realistic!

While I feel the show lost some steam in the final eps, it was still pretty good. My personal favorite series right now is 'Rectify', very underrated series. It's on Netflix now, your missing out on one of the best series airing right now if you haven't seen it.

Partly for me True Detective doesn't stand out enough to be groundbreaking when so many 'prestige' dramas out there have a similar 'Zodiac' bleakness to them. It started with the Danish Killing i guess, then we have stuff like Broadchurch, Top of the Lake etc. that are similar.

It is a far cry from when the top shows on TV were The Wire, Sopranos, Deadwood, FNL and Rome.

There are always going to be people who find a remarkable thing particularly unremarkable, partially (or entirely) because they're subjected to constant praise. And that's fine.

What gets me is when those people aren't capable of providing some analysis/thoughts, but instead copy/paste those of someone with apparent authority and pass them off as their own.

For me the show lost steam after episode 5. It was still solid but the proceeding episodes were much better than the last 3. And I actually didn't even like four that much.

I can see the argument for it.

True Detective is firmly rooted to a specific vision and style of storytelling/character building, and by that virtue it's not a widely-appealing show. It's an extremely methodical show that gives a lot for the viewer to chew on, and rarely rewards the viewer with the gratification of twists and action that many compelling series do. But for the people it does speak to, it's exactly what they've wanted.

The Americans is one of the most critically over-rated television shows around.

Odd that it's mentioned by the writer in the same sentence as truly great shows.

Man, just imagine the frenzy among critics to be the first to get out the inevitable "Overrated" article.

Emily Nussbaum got out first but hers was so silly what with not understanding the show is about two men and not a feminist ensemble piece.

It's one of the few shows I don't mind not having multi-faceted women at the forefront because the themes are about ignoring them and putting them into boxes.

Wat?

I think the formula is too simple. How many interesting serial killers you can create and track down? Things got stale for me even during the first season but the Hannibal/Will plot line kept me interested. Now it seems to follow same formula except
Will in jail, eventually somebody starts to suspect Hannibal and he does him in, rinse & repeate.
There isn't enough background to work anything beyond already established formula.

Could be that the writers come up with something awesome and turn the ship around, but I suspect it will crash and burn like Prison Break did back in the day.

*Prison Break wasn't even half the show Hannibal is but I think they will share same faith. They try to do superficial improvments to the formula and when it doesn't work they hit the full retard button and show turns into steaming pile of shit.

No.

Spoiler about the last episode:

The serial killer was a bit too much of a comic book villain though, at least in the last episode. That's the only thing I have on the show.

It's an opinion that isn't worth more than any other. It's not really a surprising one either, as there will always be diverging opinions on everything.

By creating a thread though, it seems like you want more than just give an opinion, which is weird. Do you really need this much of an audience?

I really didn't care for Hannibal but is there any word how many seasons they are going to make? Even having second season seems too much.

But the character development is amazing. Will's fall is one of the most crazy things I have ever seen on TV!
