I think it's time for Don Mattrick to come back to XBOX

No. Don Mattrick can go fuck himself. Dude was responsible for letting Age of Empires and Rise of Nations go dormant. You can say about Phil what you want but at least he gives those franchises a shot, with Age4 and Age3: DE being in development as we speak. I also like that MS are now actually putting their games on their biggest platform: Windows. That's how it fucking should be.

Of course it is. You'd have to publically declare yourself an ass clown if you think any exec, who directed people to a previous generation console because they weren't happy, and then went on to do even worse with Zynga is worthy of any position in the industry.

Is this a joke thread?

Mattrick was the shittiest thing to ever happen to Xbox.
Phil is still repairing the damage and on a good way.
Just because Phil says he’s repairing things doesn’t make it so, indeed Xbox strategy is slowly moving towards a future detrimental to the industry as a whole. Device independent, never ending games because it’s bad business to have users subscribe just for a month to knock out the latest AAA story game.

Its time to move back to what makes console gaming great. It’s time to Make Xbox Great Again. MXGA.

Mattrick sowed the seeds of the problems MS is dealing with today. Their first parties were GUTTED. They allowed other companies to also buy their second parties out from under them. Remember Mass Effect was actually an Xbox exclusive back in the day. Remedy was a second party, Bungie was owned by them. Lionhead (RIP) was too. RARE was gutted under Mattrick, they had Japanese exclusives as well. Those studios were bought out from under them, sold off or shuttered. Those that remained ended up working on one specific franchise, or Kinect games. They also basically pissed off their premier first part off SO MUCH that they asked to buy themselves out and by asked, pretty much said "let us do this, or we walk anyway." Destiny SHOULD have been an MS first party, or something like it anyway.

Phil has had to basically rebuild from nothing, and while he was running things, I consider the fruits of his labors really only beginning with the BoneX. That did actually seem to be a turning point for MS. It was a hell of a piece of hardware, and it, and the BC, as well as Game Pass have been great. The problem is that they can't snap their fingers and have AAA games ready for launch. Games take time, sometimes they don't even work out and get canceled before we even see them. That and the studios that are active, 343 in particular, have had some major issues. But he has been at least picking up studios again, MS HAS an actual first-party presence again but a lot of these teams had games in development for other publishers or promised to other platforms when they were purchased.

With a better person running the division during the Mattrick years, we'd have Bungie, Bioware, Lionhead, the actual Rare, Remedy as first parties to compliment the newer acquisitions.

So no, keep him the fuck away from the division.
Valhalla Games should have been bought out almost immediately, or at least moneyhatted for a few exclusives like Platinum Games got from Sega with their initial 3 game deal.

LOL Don would have forced a Kinect 2 bundle with every Series X driving the price of the console up 100 more and he would make everything all digital no disk drive and he would show TV lmao you cannot be serious with that.

I think he would bundled just the Kinect 2 alone, and the Xbox consoles would be a separate add-on to it. And the new slogan would be HDR! HDR! HDR! ;D

The xbox brand is finished, you have to accept it and that's it, this is not saved by anyone, it will be the last xbox.

OP please take a deep breath and let go of Don Mattrick. He's bad for you.

Usually it takes a year to get over from a relationship.

Did MS really have first parties. Gears was from Epic Games, they paid off Rockstar and Activision for exclusive deals on GTA and COD..... Mass Effect was from Bioware. Bioshock was from 2k Boston, Ninja Gaiden 2 from Tecmo and a whole list more......These were the games that mainly shaped the 360. They weren't directly from MS studios. Halo was still popular and Halo 3 did well. so after Reach Halo began a steep decline. Forza got good scores but didn't sell all that well. 343i is not doing as well for the franchise, It seems MS wants a Halo to absolutely tank in reviews and sales before they get the message. Same for Gears. They need to focus on new franchises/ip that have the same impact as these games from their first party studios. Not on SOT, SOD, Everwild etc.....

The problem is when your best games don't come from your first parties studios is that they can leave. Even a first party opted out in Bungie, Remedy cut ties, Insomniac had a one and done exclusive. The real question you need to ask is which of these studiops at MS do you see giving them a new game that is on the level and status of Gears and Halo in their brighter years, that's what they need, yet all they have are mostly Indie Studios....Phil loves Ori and he's porting it yet again, but that is not going to sell Series X machines, neither is cuphead despite those games being decent games, they are not hardware sellers...

Also if we go by "should have been exclusive "Assassins Creed 1 should have been PS3 exclusive, that is, if we listened to Jade Raymond and her speech, but it was actually better on 360, so your only guarantee is when your actual first parties is making your best games....In the 360 gen, all the high profile timed exclusive games came to PS3 eventually, even RDR, which I did not even mention earlier...XBOX subsisted on these deals, not because of their first party......It's a different situation for Sony though, with the PS3, it was just an onslaught of Warhawk, Uncharted, Demon Souls, Killzone 2, Motorstorm, MAG, GOW, LBP, Journey, GT5, LOU etc...And the third party exclusives that usually never get ported to the XBOX, like MGS4 and many Japanese games like Persona are Goty calibre games which round out the library......Yet MS needs some franchises to come about hitting homeruns out of their own stable. The Initiative is too small to compete with ND, the studios MS bought are just not in the same class, so much so Sony let go of a high calibre studio in Evo, especially if we talk graphics related, whilst MS studios struggle to make a visual footprint....

People are still saying give them time. but MS has had nothing but time. Crackdown and SOT were in development for years. Even Rare is not sure of what they're doing with Everwild yet, so it just shows they are behind, when all media was saying they are ahead for next gen....That's why Phil in his interviews always say things are on track, but it's rarely ever the case, he has been saying give him more time from the time he took over and it's not like he wasn't around before then too, he was second in charge....All the time he got for Crackdown and SOT and he still did not deliver, this is why he piggy backs on another port of Ori or singing about older games ported up to 4k 60fps, which PS5 will do also....Yet PS5 has shown us gameplay of many next gen games already. When PS5 hits in November, BC is not going to save XBOX, people will be marvelling at Miles Morales, Destruction All Stars amongst others, that ship will sail very fast. And the issue is Phil always giving his customers a false sense of security..."we got this" but hey never do.....That's a setup for wearing away the little goodwill you have left and sinking the brand into obscurity.....

IMHO the best Xbox era was the OG Xbox and in particular the Peter Moore 360 period. They were not without its problems of course, RROD stands out there.

I’m probably in the minority of Xbox fans who isn’t a fan of the Phil Spencer reign, the game output, the messaging, first party and so on. That showcase yesterday did little to up my enthusiasm and as someone who has the 100k + gamerscore, spent thousands over the years, all I can do is spend my money on stuff that I actually like elsewhere.

Who was in charge for the first half of the 360 gen?
I forget who held which positions but it was either J. Allard or Robbie Bach, from what I recall. It wasn’t quite as clear who led the Xbox division outright until Mattrick, since you also had Ballmer and Gates being hands-on and directing the division’s major moves.

Riiiight. Phil just acquired a bunch of studios. The games just aren't ready to be shown yet. The future looks very promising with Hellblade 2, Avowed, Everwild, Forza,SoD3, Fable, The Initiatives new PD etc...

Games need time. GOW was in development 5 years? GoS was like 6 years?

Xbox had a certain identity I really liked as a PS veteran.

I love the first Xbox for example. It set a new standard for console graphics, and ofcourse online. It wasn't as diverse as Playstation 2, but i still had loads of fun with the system. Mainly PGR, DoA3, NG, PD Orta, JSR:F, Otogi, Halo CE... I think the first Xbox was an amazing system. There was this Sega brilliance, and Tecmo at its peak. Along with Bizzarre, Bungie... When I first powered the console it felt like a generation ahead of PS2 and even GC. The console had a built in HDD, online play and some sick 6th generation visuals. They had Crimson Skies, Fable, best third party versions (and timed exclusive, like Splinter Cell that couldn't be properly done on GC and PS2 anyway). There wasn't much wrong with this system other than the fact nVidia sucked them dry.

The 360 was good at first too, though I never liked it as much as the first. But it did have PGR 3, Kameo, PDZ, DoA4 all around launch. PGR4, Halo 3 were solid and so was NG2. After this they cut their library and relied on their famous pillar (Halo, Forza and Gears). And Halo wasn't done by Bungie anymore. I felt Forza didn't need so many sequels, its a racing sim like game. I think GT was better off with 1 release and GaaS as well. Gears is done by different studios too, and didn't get better. Crackdown, same story. And I think Fable got worse too. Do you see a pattern?

There is something wrong with their approach towards their IP and handling IP in general. I think Spencer tries to fix it by signing software houses but this shit is going to take time and I don't think what he signed is that great. Obsidian is very good, but they aren't the studio that makes killer apps. NT I think is a shitty studio, but thats me. Sony for example signed Insomniac (who did have a third party stint and even an Xbox exclusive at some point), thats a jackpot.

But don't you know that Phil Spencer saved the Xbox brand from anti-consumer Don Mattrick and subscription based services are pro-consumer and the only thing that matters anymore?

My god it's deja vu all over again.

"MS messed up the launch but they've so many games in development. Crackdown 3, fable, recore, Scalebound and more".

I've never seen a fanbase fall for the same shit hook line and sinker.

Sadly they are both incapable to offer good competition for Sony. Phil promises competition but he is obviously heading xbox towards a different direction than Sony.

Hence me mentioning second parties. They had a lot of second party releases. Epic, Bioware and others were parts of that. But when Bioware was up for sale Microsoft was an idiot for NOT picking them up and letting EA buy them out from under them. Mass Effect was one of the big new IPs that gen and they lost exclusivity. MS needed titles immediately for the 360 and did what it had to do to get them fast, but they never capitalized on that. Look at Sony, they bought a second party like insomniac, they let their first party studios flourish. MS under Mattrick did the opposite, their Japanese studios all shuttered, they treated Bungie like shit, and pretty much went from there.

As far as giving them time, Ok, let's look at the 15 MS studios that exist:

Obsidian: Acquired less than two years ago, November 2018, was in the middle of finishing The Outer Worlds during that time, as well as PoE2 updates. So assuming they were able to move on to Avowed immediately, well a year and a half development on a title isn't going to be close to being shown, especially a Skyrim style game.

InExile: Also November 2018. Still working on Wasteland 3, which will likely still be multipolar. Just released director's cut of Bard's Tale 4 last year. So whatever they have is also likely early in development.

Ninja Theory: Bought in June 2018, so two years ago. Hellblade came out initially 3 years ago, and the team has been growing. Hellblade 2 is likely late next year, but it has been said to be a XSX exclusive, and we have the smaller arcade-y game coming in the interim.

PLayground Games: WOrking on Fable, bought in June 2018, had DLC for Forza Horizon 4 to handle.

Compulsion Games: Also bought June 2018, small team so likely working on smaller projects, new game not announced.

Undead Labs: Bought June 2018, working on State of Decay 3, another very small team. Not sure if they are hiring for next gen.

The initiative: Founded in 2018 No idea what they are working on, rumors have it as something big.

Mojang: Will keep doing Minecraft, it will never be doing anything exclusive, but might as well mention them.

Rare: Everwild and Battletoads. Sea of Thieves has been a big success for them. But no one can say that the studio was handled well. MS screwed the pooch with them, and hey... also under Mattrick.

343: Microsoft's biggest studio. Halo Infinite, and well that is what it is. Hope it comes out well, but it was also designed for this gen. Has been in development hell for a long ass time.

The Coalition: Probably their strongest Studio. Gears 5 was great, and no doubt they are working on Gears 6 right now, but it will be at least another year before that is ready to be shown, if not longer.

Turn 10: Forza.

Double Fine: Bought by MS last year. Psychonauts 2, a last gen game that is promised for all the current gen systems. Won't be able to do anything next gen until that is done. Thye are NOT a big team.

So looking over all of those, see a trend? They started buying these studios in 2018, which is also when they started working on more Xbox studios titles. It can take YEARS for that to bear fruit. Yeah, Crackdown 3 was a mess, but other than that they have been pretty good over the last few years with what they HAVE published. Ori was a hit, Forza remains strong, and Gears 5 was great. The problem is that you cannot snap the boneheaded decisions of killing their first and second party studios (or letting the second parties go. Remedy SHOULD Have been held on to, because it filled a niche even if they weren't pulling Halo numbers). They started righting that ship two years ago, and the sad thing is that we aren't going to see the fruits of that until MINIMUM late 2021, likely 2022.

As was said before, it took Sony YEARS of purchases and nurturing their teams to be able to deliver the consistent quality they have now. MS has essentially had to start from scratch as all the work they did for 360 and even the OG were burned to the ground.

TBF, Sony showed much more than what you just mentioned, like Kena, Ghostwire, Sackboy LBP, Pragmata, Little Devil Inside, All Stars (which you should go look at the latest screens they are bonkers)...Then there's Returnal, Destruction All Stars, Stray, Project Athia and we all know there are games in development like Lost Soul Aside.....

The thing to note is that Sony has not announced their full launch lineup.....Rumors are that this would be revealed at their event in August...I think from their batch of potential launch games, we can say that it's a higher graphical ceiling with more variety and quality to choose from...

Then we can expect the best games this gen at 4k 60fps. I'd say that's potential for a pretty solid launch overall...
Rumour has it that's why Microsoft held back most their important announcements yesterday to encounter Sony in August. (Which was rumoured beginning of this month.)So yeah, you only got some of the stuff yesterday.

I think Xbox should do a reverse-Sony and take its main HQ to Japan.

Once they're there, it's obvious who the new head of Xbox should be:

Don't make sense around here. Its Phil's fault he did not have a budget until 2018 and it his fault a studio can't put out games in 2 years. Look at Sony naughty dog , sucker punch and santa Monica will all have games at the PS5 launch yep.

Your an absolute moron if you think giving don back his old job would change anything every xbox would have LOCKED EA levels of DRM and a over priced kintect with ever xbox this is where the gap in logic comes you want xbox to have games that haven't been around for a little over TWO decades. And most of those games were 2nd party exclusive deals they weren't set in stone to last forever + some of those people that used to work at those companies like ninja gaiden itagaki and Masayoshi Kikuchi for jet set radio dont even work there any more. Same thing with rare most of the people who made alot of the rare from the 64 to OG xbox days are gone. If your going to hold companies to 20 years deals whats up with sony not having any Castlevania, MGS, Devil may cry, Xenogears, o right it doesnt matter it also doesn't matter when sony censored JP games into the ground and killed the vita either it also doesnt matter when games like Evolution and liver pool close up either right who needs racing games or variety just make some hipster art game or another Cinematic narrative TPS.

The only game in your list thats a launch title is kena and Lost soul aside is or was a ps4 game all those other games arent coming out for years.
Project Athia could be another square tech demo that doesn't manifest into anything.

Some of their big guns have games in development, but remember these bigger studios handle two games now. Insomniac is working on Ratchet and Spiderman. Naughty is handling LOU and UC4. If UC has shifted to San Diego, it means ND has room for a new IP........

As for first party or exclusives for launch. I think Destruction All Stars, Sackboy, Spiderman are all locks, which speaks to more variety than simply Halo. Then you have Godfall and ports from some of the best games this gen which all happen to look better than Halo Infinite on Series X, So ports/patches to UC4, TLOU2, Tsushima, GOW, Death Stranding, Detroit, Astrobot etc......Who knows if Demon Souls Remake will make launch or if Sony will surprise with a Driveclub Remaster at 4k 60fps, but we know they have lots of games in development, We know of Lost Soul Aside and Project Awakening......

We will know more later...There should be some exclusives from Japanese Studios as well.....I guess we wait and see for the final list...

So just like what MS is doing with oblivion, playgrounds.
I think Destruction All Stars, Sackboy, Spiderman are all locks, which speaks to more variety than simply Halo.
Bold assumptions so MS has nothing but games that have no release date in sight are now auto Launch games for the ps5 is this logic or fanboy speak
Then you have Godfall and ports from some of the best games this gen which all happen to look better than Halo Infinite on Series X, So ports/patches to UC4, TLOU2, Tsushima, GOW, Death Stranding, Detroit, Astrobot
Godfall so only thing Xbox has is halo but sony has 15+ ps4 games that are not even confirmed to be BC with the ps5. But Gears5,halo5,Forza horizon 4, ori,K.i getting updates along with games like Gears tactics, MS flight sim, Phynasy star online 2, and Yakuza 7 dont count OK then LOL.
Who knows if Demon Souls Remake will make launch or if Sony will surprise with a Driveclub Remaster at 4k 60fps, but we know they have lots of games in development, We know of Lost Soul Aside and Project Awakening......
Demon souls isnt coming out anytime soon, Sony closed Evolution for good why the hell would they remake when the majorit of the ps fanbase didnt even support Driveclub also all the devs left for other studios like Codemaster,Turn 10 and Ghost/criterion games. You might as well put Lost souls aside in the same vain and Granblue re link there not coming out anytime soon
Project Awakening is no where near anything past a visual tech demo and its square so the games not coming out for another 5 years min.
We will know more later...There should be some exclusives from Japanese Studios as well.....I guess we wait and see for the final list...
O yea which ones the ones that have there games censored into the ground like Atlier,DMC,Senran,DOA or are you talking about games like RE,Yakuza,FF,DQ that are now multiple platform.

As was said before, it took Sony YEARS of purchases and nurturing their teams to be able to deliver the consistent quality they have now. MS has essentially had to start from scratch as all the work they did for 360 and even the OG were burned to the ground.
To be fair, since the PS1 days Sony has had PD with GT and Omega Boost, Liverpool/Psygnosis with Wipeout and Formula 1. they had Clap Hanz with Hot Shots. They had Japan Studio and others........So they always had good studios and of course we all know they greenlighted and published some real classics Vib Ribbon, Intelligetn Qube and Jumping Flash to name a few.....They always had a knack for picking up and signing quality games......Which is an art in and of itself. Something which they do better than the rest...MS on the other hand especially, really don't know how to pick a game...They always choose the wrong ones...
Rumour has it that's why Microsoft held back most their important announcements yesterday to encounter Sony in August. (Which was rumoured beginning of this month.)So yeah, you only got some of the stuff yesterday.
It was also said that MS's first show in June was held back to show their real first party games in July. This July show was to show the Series X in all it's glory. Games uncompromised by XBOX ONE because it was being built on Series X first and down ported to XBOX ONE. People were never short of suggesting that games scale up the higher you go and you would not see the limits of the older hardware as you scale to the higher spec......So are you saying we have to wait for another MS show? to show us next gen, because based on all the hype and from all indications, this show was to be that...

What are you talking about, we have seen gameplay of Lost Soul Aside. We have seen Project Awakening's trailer. We can at least attest that Project Awakening looks very similar to the UE4 demo relative to graphical complexity...So we know there are many games in development.

The problem with Phil's position at launch is that his best looking games will come from third parties and not from XBOX studios working on Series X hardware and pushing it to spec. You best looking games on Series X come this holiday will be COD, BF, NFS etc....Not their first parties...
You best looking games on Series X come this holiday will be COD, BF, NFS etc....Not their first parties...
The COD coming out this year is running on the last gen source engine by treyarch going by the leaks
BF isnt coming and NFS now has a 2/3 dev cycle wrong again.

The 2013 launch lineup of xboxone was really impressive. So many promising titles.

For xsx, well for gp should i say not so much.

Plus don is fit : what happened to phil ? Looks like he doubled volume in 5 years. That striked me yesterday during the show. He used to be handsome...

Lets stick to Phil, imagine the next guy getting another 6 or 7 years cushion just blaming everything on our guy Phil.
