I think I've discovered the best "modern" instrumental band.

I put modern in quotations because they (Ozric Tentacles) have been around since the early 80s.

I just recently discovered them through pandora and holy shit what a great band. Ive always been into "weird" music like this, but this is a whole different level, and I love it.

Check it out for yourselves

This is some pretty neat stuff. Wouldn't call them the best "modern" instrumental band, but they are pretty neat. Quite some layers they got.

Animals as Leaders holds the instrumental crown for me.

I also like animal as leaders, I listen to them when I want a more heavy/metal sound.

They're pretty heavy and really geared towards music nerds, but I can't think of a more "modern" instrumental band than Animals as Leaders. They are the very definition of progressive and fresh, from their songwriting to the actual techniques being pioneered on guitar by Tosin Abasi.

That being said, never heard Orzic Tentacles before and i'm really digging the linked track, so thanks.

That's not Explosions In The Sky, Eluvium, Mono, The American Dollar, Tristeza, The Album Leaf, Boards of Canada, The Six Parts Seven, Carbon Based Lifeforms or Saxon Shore.

You need more Toe in your life. Once and a while there are vocals, but most of their songs are instrumental.

Everyone in the band is insanely good, but my God, the drummer.

Ozric Tentacles are fantastic, OP. My favorite album is The Yum Yum Tree. Sounds like electronic music, but it's all live instruments.

Ozric Tentacles are a great space rock jam band. They are rather consistent throughout their discography, meaning most of it, if not all of it, is good.

So much better instrumental music in Post Rock/Metal, with a lot of it posted in this thread (Tortoise, GY!BY, etc.)

You need some Scale the Summit, Russian Circles, Pelican, Blotted Science, Cloudkicker, and more (I'm too lazy to list off the rock).

But damn do I love "Spirals in Hyperspace."

edit: You need to check out "Maybeshewill" and the first "And So I Watch You From Afar..." album.

Mono though.

I have a Mono album (You Are Here is the title I think) and while I like it a lot, it feels like it's the same song over and over. Good music, but a little diversity would be nice. Maybe it was just that particular album.

Well, they're more instrumental rock than prog metal. A lot more.

Prog metal would be more along the lines of Atheist or Opeth.

Yeah I wasn't really sure what to call them, they're certainly more rock than prog though.

Opeth is on a completely different level. They're top 3 all time for me.
