If PS4 Pro Had UHD Blu Ray?

I would pay $399 and not a penny more. Still don't understand how a $299 console has a 4K blu-ray drive and the PS4 Pro doesn't. Optically just doesn't look good.

Does it bother me? Nope, don't have a 4K set yet and I barely buy physical media anymore except for video games.

The question is like to know is, not whether or not you care that it's missing, but are you shocked it wasn't included. I posted a list of my wish list for Neo at the time and I didn't even think to include a UHD drive because I thought it was a foregone conclusion.

I would have probably paid $449 this Holiday for a Pro with UHD and beefed up CPU.

As it is, not having a UHD drive inluded in a PS4 (Pro) makes me push switching my living room setup to 4k for at least a year (not that I am hurting at 1080p though). My PS4s will do fine for now.

It wasn't on my wish list. Like you I thought it was a sure thing.

Well yeah, I own an S and it's the first time ive appreciated the jump to 4K. Why buy a high end TV and not take advantage of it, those display in Best Buy sure as hell aren't running streams when they wow you. Hell people bring up streaming and of the little 4K streaming options an even smaller amount are HDR whereas all UHDs are. Vudu, the best looking streaming client, supports Dolby vision which the PRO does not. Just an insane decision considering how much they talked about 4K. Instead we'll get upscaled games and low bit rate streams.

IM going for an all digital future I literally could care less, I mean most of my movies are digital so I'm straight in that department and most of my games are digital as well except for some of the collectors editions I have

Are you accepting applications:)
What can you do ?

Anyway I love streaming but Netflix isn't the same as owning movies. They often go and ain't available anymore

And I have 800 bluray (including 70 3D ) and ... 5 uhd already. I'm a bluray vore

Xbox One S is just a smaller XB1 internally though, except for the HDR changes, it's probably cheap to produce and maybe it would've been $199 without 4K blu-ray.

Then again, if 4K blu-ray made XB1S go from $199 to $299 then why is PS4 Slim $299 too? Does it even have the HDR changes?
Nothing makes sense here.

The number of Blu Ray discs I owned since 2006 was 4 only. I much prefer Sony's approach by keeping the price low and excluding the less-gaming focused features.

So yes $399 is very cheap considering that slim is only $100 lower and X1S is only $50 lower (1TB).

Sure would. Instead, now I'm buying a One S. I might pickup the Pro as well down the road, but you just handed MS business.

Though they probably knew that. Worth it to make the $399 price point? Idk. They also should have made the Slim $249 w/o any bundled games. The One S is a better deal and better product at $299.

I'd probably buy one, even though I don't need UHD Blu-ray.

I'm already buying a new console, an extra $100 isn't that big of a difference.

If it had Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, then I'd consider a $499 price point.

Else, no thanks. I want the full UHD experience. Not the one offered by Xbox 1S.

Edit:
Haven't watched a movie on any console in a long time.

No.

It plays 4k shit through network/streaming anyway. If I managed to care enough ever.

The same 4k streaming thats built into pretty much every modern 4k HDR TV, effectivly making it useless.

I would have paid £399 if it had come with a 4k drive, now i'll just stick to my PC and original PS4's

Just kidding about the job..

I have a spending habit like you.

65" Sony 4K HDR,
Sony 4K HDR receiver. Last month

iPhone 7 and Ps pro on the way.

About 800 CDs
Not even close to your Blu Rays!!

No. I hardly even buy Blu-Ray discs outside of games. It really does seem more like a check box for the console wars than a feature the majority care about.

Worthless to me. I've bought about 10 blu-rays since 2007, and barely bothered watching those. I don't know anyone who buys them basically due to limited portability and region-coding concerns.

As someone who owns a 4K tv I don't even have any desire to buy any 4K bluray player until there is a cheaper option.

There was a thread about that, the missing audio codecs is apparently on the todo list for the XB1S software update team. No release date yet though.

Gimme the job, I can do anything you want ;)

If I had a 4k TV I'd probably care, but as it is, it just sucks that it is a console that won't have disc support when it has other 4k support.

It feels like a half measure with features that are being withheld for the next console.

Doesn't speak well to the amount of time before a console refresh or a new generation imo.

How viable is 4k streaming even? It seems like Sony doesn't even believe in physical discs and it's their format. I can understand not wanting to force it like the PS3 again, but if they want to push 4k as the selling point anyways and the cost wouldn't be that much more while not costing too much more than the vanilla model or the slim, it seems like they are making the wrong choice this time.

The XB1S actually looks good in comparison now if you want a 4k device, which is the main hook for Sony's marketing so far.

Would you pay $499 or $449 if Sony included UHD Blu Ray?

Yes. I'm not getting a PS4 Pro for this very reason (the omission of a UHD Blu Ray drive). Had they included it, I was ready to put money down...and still would if they had a way to fix this huge gaffe mid-stream.

Nah, I appreciate the lower price. Back in the PS3 days, I could rent blurays to my hearts content. So Bluray was a big deal. Now that I would have to essentially buy every movie I want to watch in 4k....its not worth it.

I have yet to find any online or offline source claiming that this is something MS is even thinking about in the future.

That's my take on this too, I'm guessing that they'll launch the 4K blu-ray Pro next year unless it's magically updated with 4K blu-ray capabilities through software, there is too much talk about this for Sony to just ignore it.

As it's doubtful I'd be going 4K on a TV until at least the end of next year, possibly later depending on how prices come down & if OLEDs become more affordable and less prone to blue wash, it doesn't concern me.

PS5 will be and interesting spec though - if UHDBD doesn't take off for movies but becomes necessary for games...

Me too. This PS4 hardware remaster is cool for the hardcores only. Even Scorpio will be a half joke trying to push "true 4k" with a little 6Tf AMD chip. Feels like that early 3D fight between Sega 32x and SNES FX chip games.

The PS5 in 2.5 years is where my aim is at. Crossing fingers for avatar like fidelity!

I would not pay extra for UHD blu ray support, I already have a UHD blu ray player.

If they were going to have multiple SKUs of the Pro I would wish for one without a hard drive since I'm just going to put the 2TB drive I have in my existing PS4 into the Pro. The 1TB drive in the pro will just end up collecting dust somewhere.

Microsoft already confirmed Dolby Atmos codec/bitstreaming is on the to-do list...

...and the receivers haven't even gotten the DTS:X firmware updates scheduled for this summer to process that codec...so making DTS:X available on the XB1S doesn't help anyone right now.

Definitely, although I don't think a Blu-ray drive change would cost anywhere near $100 extra. (Everything else required would be included to support the 4K media.)

I have a 4K HDR TV, and I still buy Blu-rays. But I'm someone who knows exactly what they want to watch, as apposed to just browsing for something in Netflix' limited selection.

As it is, I'll now have to spend several hundred dollars for a UHD player, rearrange my setup, as all my HDMI ports are occupied.

And I also have slightly less justification for upgrading to a pro now...
