• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

If the PS4 is $599, would you still consider getting it?

I'll bite for around $500. $599 isn't overpriced for the hardware inside, but it'll flop and I'll own a Dreamcast 2.

I don't get gamers that buy $600 phones every 2 years, but won't pay a cent over $299 for a console/media player every 7 or 8 years.

Hell no. Not for a second. $399 is tempting but even that's too much right now. I'll wait until its more within my range. By that time the new xbox will be out and I'll have a clearer picture of what the future for each console holds as well as what types of exclusive games each has and will have.

I shouldn't, but I probably will. Expecting £400+ over here, which isn't far removed from what I paid for the PS3 back at UK launch I don't think.

I really don't understand people who have no problem paying $50 yearly for something like xbox live ("dude, that's like less then $5 bucks a month!"), but scoff at the idea of paying an extra $100 for a new console that will probably last them 5 years.

Nah. My PS3 backlog is ridiculous so it can hold me over until PS4 is at most $300. And that's not including my PS1 and PS2 backlogs that I can play on my PS3.

I have a gaming capable PC to snatch up the stray multiplat PS4 titles that I'd otherwise miss out on, but I'm good on the console side for at least the next couple years. Maybe winter 2015 I'll grab a PS4 and WiiU.

Unless of course Sony decides to start phasing out awesome features in the launch model like they did with PS3 bc, forcing my hand earlier than I wanted to.

I spent $430 on an iPad Mini, and I am not spending a penny more than 400 for a new console.

Why would I spend more on a box that's tethered to my TV? That type of setup is starting to look pretty anachronistic. I don't need Netflix and that kind of stuff, it's already built in to my TV.

I will never pay over $300 for a gaming console ever again. If that means I have to wait years for price drops, then so be it. Waiting for price drops seems to be a good thing anyways since by that time the console will have a better game library.

I did buy the fat PS3 at $600. It the ps4 is the same price. Definitely not this time. I can use that towards building a new rig. Plus, I still have my backlog on my PS3, PS2, PSP, and Steam. Not seeing myself having a lot of time to play.....

Probably not. To be honest, I'm not even sure I'll pick it up at launch even if it's cheaper. This is the first console cycle that I'm really not all that jazzed about. Even yesterday's event didn't seem all that exciting. Hopefully as we get closer to launch that will change.

Price not an issue for me, other than the fact that if its too high the install base will be so low that there is no point in me buying it since no 3rd party games will be developed.

I think it's going to be 499/599 premium honestly. Also, I suspect eithe the PS4 or 720 will have set top box technology built in and be used as a lure by cable company subscriptions, so you can pick them up cheap that way like you do your cell phone.

My money is up for grabs this holiday but i'm not paying £450/$600 for either HD+ twins and that was confirmed by those demos last night which didn't amaze me like they have some other peeps

I'll weigh them up and only jump in this year if one's <£300 and only if it is not cataclysmically weaker than the other, I can wait and play Destiny this Christmas!

I just can't afford to be an early adopter again.
Did it with PSP and with PS3. Within a year of both of those console launches there was already a new SKU in stores.
Wether it be less power usage, less weight or less noise, there's always a redesign.

I'll just wait for holiday 14

Probably the most sensible post on Gaf today!

No.

$399 is the price point where I will not hesitate to buy a new console. I am willing to go as high as $449, but not a penny more.

After reading this thread, I've come to the conclusion 70% of GAF'ers are broke as a joke, 29% are thrifty to excess.

$450 is the max I will spend on either of the next two consoles. And with that said, I will only spend that much on one of them and wait until I can get the other one for under $300.

Buying any new piece of hardware at launch is a fiscally irresponsible thing to do.

In other words: I ain't got that kinda scratch.

I'm in the same boat, except I've got the scratch. Buying at launch means abysmal games selection, tech problems, high price and an uncertain future.

I'm going to be leaving here a bit when the release comes around, because the GAF hype almost made me put money down on a Wii U and Vita.

I don't care what the price point is honestly. I won't be getting a console at launch ever again. 599.99 or not it's best to save money and let the inevitable shit storm settle and pick the best console then. Hopefully at better price.

+1 for PS4 for the used game stuff though.

Because the console is not likely to last you for 5 years, given the track record they had last generation?

To answer the original question, probably not, but it's not an impossibility. I'd like to see more before I commit to anything.

I still have an original xbox and ps3

That's the one and only thing, that makes me hesitate about buying the system at launch. I hated how loud the 60GB PS3 was. It wasn't such a problem with games, but it certainly affected enjoying movies.

If people pay $500 for a fucking iPad, people will pay $500 for a PS4.....it's that simple. I would drop $600 if I had too......I know I will get my moneys worth.

After the whole "five hundred and ninety-nine you-ess-dollars" fiasco, there is literally no way they would price it that. Even if they had to make it $598 or $601, they wont touch that price point again.

Hell nah.

$400 and you have me day one.

I just don't think it'll be 400 though considering the 8 GB of GDDR5. :(

A system

1. with 8GB ram that could last 7-8 years

2. with Diablo 3, FF 15 Agnes, Witness, Watchdogs revealed before launch

3. with most developers beeing super excited by the stunning specs

4. with the clear possibility of Demons Souls 2 and Last Guardian , plus Last of Us 2, GOW etc

5. with full JRPG support, Level 5 is mentioned !!!

6. free online, netflix

7. with a new Capcom epic game that is out of this world

8. new amazing looking IPs like Knack

9. Witcher 3 - http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/02/21/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-confirmed-for-playstation-4

Even 1000$ would seem extremely low for that one to me TBH

I am so glad they chose to go all out in hardware, also this will eventually come down to 300$ in a few years anyway

I would always prefer to pay 600$ for a system that lasts 8 years, then 400$ for a system that will feel old at launch and feel dead in a couple of years

Nah, my "considering" point would be 500$ and for 399$ I'd buy it right away. Or else I can wait 2-3 years for price reductions.
