If the PS4 is $599, would you still consider getting it?

I would always prefer to pay 600$ for a system that lasts 8 years, then 400$ for a system that will feel old at launch and feel dead in a couple of years

I couldn't agree more. I want longevity that's provided by good specs, instead of buying a new system every 4-5 years. In the longer run the total entry expense is pretty much the same, when you need to buy more cheaper systems that last for less years.

I believe it's well worth $600. My near launch PS3 lasted me 5 or 6 years so that was a $600 investment well spent. But I'm in no rush to dive in like I was in the past. I have plenty to keep me busy until games start to flow.

Of course I would like to pay as little as possible, but if it comes out at $600 then I have no problems paying $600 for the device that will allow me to participate in the latest and greatest versions of my favorite hobby.

A system

1. with 8GB ram that could last 7-8 years

2. with Diablo 3, FF 15 Agnes, Witness, Watchdogs revealed before launch

3. with most developers beeing super excited by the stunning specs

4. with the clear possibility of Demons Souls 2 and Last Guardian , plus Last of Us 2, GOW etc

5. with full JRPG support, Level 5 is mentioned !!!

6. free online, netflix

7. with a new Capcom epic game that is out of this world

8. new amazing looking IPs like Knack

9. Witcher 3 - http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/02/21/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-confirmed-for-playstation-4

Even 1000$ would seem extremely low for that one to me TBH

I am so glad they chose to go all out in hardware, also this will eventually come down to 300$ in a few years anyway

buahahahahahahahahaahahah

thanks for the laugh

Hell naw.

I would get it around $429 or so. But def not spending over $500 on a console especially a launch console. I learned my lesson with this gen.

What is so funny ?

A PC with that spec and fast ram would cost much more and have none of the games i want the most, like JRPGs

And a PC would still not have this ram unified and would require extra fetches and cycles for that

I would definitly pay 1000$ for PS4, that will also last 7-8 years and be optimized to the extreme

Nope. As is, I'm waiting until the price comes down below $300.

So no matter what its launch price, I'll probably be waiting a couple of years to get one.

Lol no. Just on principle. I don't ever want a $599 console again, unless it's packing major power, which even with 8GB GDDR5, the PS4 isn't. Though it's still better than I thought it'd be. £300-£380 is my max budget. £350 for a dead set.

So. Much. Money.

I would probably still do it though...

The funny thing is that if you bought the 8GB GDDR5 separately for a PC in today's market, that alone would cost close to $700.

They definitely will be taking a huge loss on the system come this fall...

They can't price it 599 though, it's part of the reason why the PS3 had such a terrible start.

Can you even buy 8GB GDDR5 separately? Or do you mean 8GB GDDR5 in a GPU? Because the latter is very different. I'd personally have much preferred a more advanced GPU over more ram. Ie a 7970 (or 8000 series), or GTX 670 etc. But what do I know lol.

Not at that price. $399 is fair. I get the impression Sony wants to pack a lot into that cardboard box, but the lesson from the PS3s launch should still be resonating.

Yes, I would.

I want to reward companies and products relative to my hobbies that go all out, either in terms of innovation or expense. The Playstation 4 is a gamer's machine and I'll support it day 1.

Anybody expecting this hardware to be 300 or sub can just stop now. You need a serious reality check - it's way to expensive in terms of components and would be entirely unprecedented for Sony.

They didn't even drop the Vita price here for God's sake.

Best we can hope for is 399 USD.

Whatever it is I'm gonna have to wait for a price drop. Spent 650 out the door on a deluxe Wii u with controllers and a few games. I'm predicting a PS4 will be more then 350 just for the console so it's a safe bet you'll likely spent between 700 - 800 bucks day one with all the extra stuff. Unfortunately, I don't have that type of cash now.

I probably would. That's about the cost of a non-plan smart phone, and I'd be hoping it will last me a good number of years.

I know Sony at that price is already losing money per console, but at this point more than $499 for a console is too much, they are losing a very big potential market... also they should lowered game prices to 50 dollars or they will LOSE the battle.

I think they could price with a subscription in mind. Like cell phones, sell hardware cheap and have like a 2 year online subscription for x amount of money per month to subsidize the hardware cost. I think that would be a fairly smart way to sell the machine. Without that idea I can't see it feasible to price below 399 and that's lowballing it.

$599 no....My magic price for PS4 is $399.99, so I'd be willing to wait several years for the price cut, unless it has a must play game, than maybe at $450.

No, not at all; I'll jump in after the first drop if that's the case.

$399.99 is almost impulse-purchase territory, however.

~$400 feels acceptable but I'd first want to understand the other costs like premium online subscription requirements, cables, additional controllers, etc... All that peripheral expense plus a few games and the day one cost starts going up real fast.

I don't think they'll make that mistake again. There's nothing really bleeding edge about the hardware that will drive up the cost like the Cell and Blu-ray drive did for the PS3. That ram won't come cheap though.

Well, we haven't seen what it looks like.

Maybe the disc drive comes with a set of lips you can attach to the front of it.

I'm expecting anywhere from $399.99 to $449.99 for the launch price.

The GDDR5 upgrade makes the console more expensive. But not even close to the cost of Blu Ray on PS3.

Based on the few games that have been shown so far, no. If its E3 showing is really mindblowing and the launch lineup looks to be the best of any console ever, then maybe. This gen taught me to not buy any consoles based on the libraries you expect them to have, only by the games that are actually on shelves. I have no idea how long the PS4 will take to build such a library or how much it will cost at that point.
