IGN: 5 Quick Fixes for Resident Evil 5

Isn't point 1 implemented because of the whole co-op nature of the game? Did they really want or expect this to be Dark Alliance levels of downtime whenever someone needs to fumble with inventory?

Point 2...whatever. Knife combat is a cheap way to save ammo on downed enemies and break barrels.

Point 3 is pretty much the issue that could also be levelled at RE4. That game needed a seriously hardcore difficulty where enemies really rushed you. Professional didn't cut it.

Point 4, people really bitch about this? Considering placement is vital in this game, I don't think Capcom wanted gamers to get into situations where you are feathering the stick to avoid accidentally gunning headfirst into crowds. Gears does it too!

Point 5 is the most retarded thing I;ve read today! COngradulation!

Shut the fuck up, *insert Gaf user here*. You're not a game designer. Stop trying to be. Why do we have any more of a right to say how games should be than they do?

I, I actually agree with them.

For those TL;DR people, they're not complaining about not being able to move while shooting.

Inventory system: All guns/projectiles need to automatically get added to L,U,R when you pick them up. Leave D for healing items, or just assign a button to use one if you have one in your inventory and leave D for another attack item. Things get all shitted up when you pick up a new weapon and have to go into the menu to select it/move it to a quick-select button.

Jesus fuck. I thought we moved past the whole Africa/"color" thing by now. Does it really matter anymore? Besides, Africa has plenty of diverse segments, so is it that hard to imagine the variety in the enemies you fought? Yea, yea...political correctness. I'm not saying it would be far-fetched to say that Capcom switched things up for that reason. They probably did. Seriously though...who gives a fuck? Do you want to kill black zombies that fucking bad? They couldn't have put in something else in the article that actually mattered?

Not this bullshit again. Didn't IGN do something like this for KILLZONE 2. Why don't these guys just start a game company and create the Perfect Game. Jeez.

So there are white people all over African villages now huh? News to me. I agree that the political correctness is way over the top. Considering when the game was first shown a white zombie could not be found, then the N'Gai article happened, and suddenly it's a rainbow coalition of zombies? Bullshit.

Just to get this out of the way; i actually haven't had the chance to play the demo yet. I have no idea how many more white villagers appear more than black villagers. What i'm saying is that this idea that African village = ONLY Black is ridiculous.

I'm not denying that N'Gai's racism article had an affect on the game (most likely), but the fact of the matter is, and as stated before, Northern Africa has a several different ethic groups lively there. Even in the poorest of places. I find the fact that people are getting bothered by how more races are appearing in the game and asking more Black people to appear in it to be a little hard to swallow.

Thats all i'm saying.

Man, IGN really screwed up on this one. You just DO NOT criticize one of the sacred cows of gaming. What they hell were they thinking??

Next thing you know, Capcom will actually LISTEN to them and give us some half-cocked, new-fangled, highfalutin analog movement. And then, and perhaps only then, will the gaming apocalypse truly be upon us.

Don't listen to them, Capcom! YOU HEAR ME!? You hang onto those outdated control schemes for dear life and if anyone tries to tell you otherwise, you can ram it straight down their pieholes. Of course, you'll have to stop moving before you ram it down their pieholes, but you ram it nevertheless.

And just know that there are a lot of fans who will defend you no matter what the cost. In fact, they will fight tooth and nail to make sure no one even TRIES to criticize anything you do. Because that's not how we do things in a free and open society, and - so help me God - I hope it never is.

Yeah, point 5 is rock stupid. But, Jesus, you people act like IGN just insulted your mother

They do need to bring back the women though. Kinda destroys the whole village thing when there are only men.

How about this: Why should Capcom have had to change the game? Do you really want to kill white zombies that fucking bad? It matters because it really doesn't make sense in the demo. The white zombies in RE5 are so fucking pasty that it just doesn't make sense why they're there. It's like they were intentionally made extremely white so no mistake could be made.

i agree with the token white/asian villagers thing, yes, but i think that capcom could easily make sense of it.

something like the contagion is 'given' to any passers by/through the town (who inevitably stay in the village with the other fellow zombies), and we KNOW that there are various white and ethnically diverse parts of africa, so it's plausible. i don't know what angle, if any, the story will take on the ethnic issue, but i really don't see what's so hard about just leaving it at an all-african village. n'gai can cry and whine all he wants. kanye west can join in too. we'll have punch and pie.

the knife thing is srsly annoying tho.

The demo was fun and the game will be a day one purchase for me...

The only point I really agree with is the knife situation, you should be able to walk while holding the knife, it's frustrating when you take 3 seconds to whip out your knife only to swing and not hit the enemy 2 feet in front of you while they lunge over your blade and grab you. Also, I wish you could split items, so I could hand my friend only a handful of bullets or a single grenade from my stash.

Where the hell did you ever see me bitching about the trailer, and the "color" of the zombies that you fought? Nowhere, since day one of the trailer being shown.

And besides. Why the hell would I care about the color of the zombies I've been killing. I've been annihilating multicolored zombies since Resident Evil 2.

I dont think they are whie or asian though. Either way, maybe the super las plagas infected alot more than the locals (not really an isolated case this time). Its not like the spanish village where it was some backwoods place that just had some small cult.

This I agree with more than the color stuff. They made it a point in RE4, right off of the bat, to show that it didn't matter who got infected: even little children got killed, because of the situation. I dunno where they are going with this.

There is no such thing as a "white" african, evidently.

Capcom would have been much better off not releasing this demo. It will cost them sales.

RE games are always frustrating to play at first. But then you adjust to the crappy controls and annoying design choices, and things are OK. In the context of a demo, you never get beyond the frustration stage.

You seem very personally attacked by this. I'm just saying that it is completely fucking ridiculous that in this day and age a game set in small African villages has just as many horribly pasty white people and it does black people. And yeah there are white Africans, it's called South Africa. As far as I know this game doesn't take place in South Africa. The realism of the game was sacrificed so that headlines like "Capcom releases video game with racist undertones" wouldn't be released. Why does it fucking matter if you're killing black zombies if the game take place on a continent that is 95% black?

I had the exact same first reaction to the demo. And I LOVE Too Human. I played the RE5 demo some more and have backed away from the ledge.

Capcom can never win, when the zombies are mostly black people, people complain. When they mix it up, people complain. They make an awesome game and all people do is complain

But...it's...not...a real place?

There are more spots in Africa that have "white Africans" than just South Africa. Saying otherwise is silly.

Trust me, I don't feel personally attacked by any of this. I don't care in the slightest. My thing is, why the fuck does it matter what the color is? Is it going to mystically change the attributes of the characters, or make the game more tense than it already is? Why press an issue that has been beaten to death ten times over? Why is it even an issue for them to change it to save face? Did you want to kill "dark" enemies that bad that you are going to bring it up nonstop, especially when something more pressing could have been brought to light about the gameplay of RE5? They might have had some good points, but that one isn't anywhere near deserving of attention as something like...the AI is (even though there are supposedly harder difficulties given right off of the bat...).

Edit: And one more time for prosperity: I DO NOT give a flying fuck about the color. They could have been purple with green mohawks, and I wouldn't have given a damned. Nor am I trying to defend Capcom.

The 5th point is ludicrous. :lol

Is it so hard to believe that Northern Africa (the area that was scouted by the RE5 team) is ethnically diverse? Considering places like Egypt and Libya are in Northern Africa and other Mediterranean countries within fairly close distance of it; that was a ridiculous point to make.

EDIT: Honestly, i'm a little offended.

Yea, it's as if they expected the game to only have a mixtures of starving ethiopians and General Debaku (24).

The game takes place in Africa....which is a real place. It has nothing to do with them being black but it has everything to do with the game providing a believable setting. Even though RE is completely ridiculous it takes place on a real continent and needs to provide a realistic setting. Seeing the pastiest white guy ever stumble towards me in Africa does not do that. This is all my opinion though. There are a lot of things that bother me about RE5 besides this.

I just assumed they were middle eastern/arabic guys. The non-black zombies looked more middle eastern than white to me.

I'm shocked, but I actually agree with most of these points. I could live with no walking+shooting if everything else worked fine, but it doesn't. Knife combat and the run button really annoyed me when I was playing the demo.

everyone repeat after me:

"its OKAY to criticize a video game,

it does not make me a bad person,

it does not mean i can not perform at my work or home,

it does not mean i can not perform satisfactorily in the bedroom, nor will it be viewed as any other slight pertaining to my virility,

its OKAY to criticize a video game"

so you gonna make a shooter set and...Mexico, you gonna Asians running around? cuz it "does'nt matter". Please spare me this "post racial" BS, the thing just does'nt make since within the mythology and setting you're presenting your audience...

But, the arguments so far for having less "white" africans, make it seem like their audience doesn't know much about Africa to begin with. I could understand if they had little green men or some shit running around, but they don't. Hell, I had a counselor in high school that was damned near the color of one of the enemies in the game, and she was born in effin Nigeria. So, it's not like they don't exist outside of SA. I mean, the game could take place near effin egypt.

And hell, if you want to bring up the fact that they are messing with the "mythology" of the setting they are presenting, then why the hell don't any of the people have actual guns, instead of this crossbow bullshit they have going on. Why are Chris and Sheva the only ones with high powered weapons, when mass amounts of weapons are exactly one of the reasons so many die in Africa. I don't see that shit being brought up nearly as much as the whole racial bs, and it's way more obvious and retarded.

You seem like you really don't want to believe that Africa is 95% black. You're not reading anything else we're typing. It's like you're the white guy trying SO HARD to not say anything that could even be loosely interpreted as racist. The setting does not fucking mesh together when these white Africans are whiter than people from Norway or Sweden.

Also nothing is more obvious that race and race issues.

Wow, IGN is not that bad guys, it serves it's purpose for the mainstream. It's also pretty good at providing extensive game coverage.

It's not a site I visit a lot, but don't assume simply because it doesn't cater to the hardcore that it's shit.

While it may be "diverse"New York Cityin Africa, it is no where near as diverse as...say...San Francisco. Shit should have been 90% black zombies. I didn't see the white community up in arms when there was a majority of white zombies in RE4.

For starters, Africa isn't anywhere near 95% black. The actual percentage is in the high 70's IIRC. Sure, SA has the most, but it's juvenile to even begin to say that they only live in SA. I even gave you an example just now. Whatever though.

And, you act like you can't read where a couple of people have pointed out actual areas in africa where people might be of a lighter color.

:lol @ "It's like you're the white guy trying SO HARD to not say anything that could even be loosely interpreted as racist. "

:lol :lol

And with that, I'm finished. lmao

They won't fix shit, since when do Japanese developers ever listen to criticisms from Western gamers?
It's a shame really because RE5 could have been much better, I really think the demo is going to hurt their sales (similarly to how Lost Planet hurt their sales).

and yes I know Lost Planet sold well, I'm not predicting RE5 to sell badly just that it would have sold better if the controls were more accessible outside the RE4 audience.

to be fair, the quick changing of items and the "Gears" controls were all added later on in development as a result of complaints from the western audience. It isn't fair to call the RE team out of touch, in this case.
