Stark and foreboding, it feels like you’re at the centre of the Cold War even before a nuke has been fired. Controls are intuitive too.
7.8 Graphics
Ripped straight out of WarGames, the neon wire-frame models and understated effects maybe sparse but they’re extremely stylish, perfectly suiting DEFCON’s matter-of-fact approach.
8.8 Sound
Reflects the horror of the holocaust superbly with an apocalyptic soundtrack that twists and changes in time with the action.
8.9 Gameplay
Refreshingly simple yet bursting with depth, DEFCON is enjoyable as both a quick blast as well as subtle strategic epic.
7.8 Lasting Appeal
Takes a moment to learn but months to master, although there are no additional units or modes to unlock.

The experience is further enhanced by the haunting soundtrack, which provides a melancholy, almost oppressive backdrop to the game. Best described as mood music, it changes to reflect the action, growing in intensity as the countdown nears DEFCON 1. Effects are used superbly too, with the howling winds of the holocaust echoing in the background, nursery rhymes floating eerily from one speaker to the other and the faint cough as another innocent victim draws their last breath can all be heard as you prime your next nuke.

Isn't the main Introversion development team just consisting of one guy? How come he's able to single-handedly outclass multi-million dollar productions just every time?

Introversion really are an anachronistic little miracle. I want this game now.

Although the main guy (with 1-2 other programmers, artists, etc. I think) behind this was singular, I don't think it's just one guy. But it's definitely not a large company. I think it was started as 3 guys.


And I'm on this shit. You better believe it. 10$ bucks is a steal.
 
Starting at DEFCON 5, it's the calm before the storm with players unable to initiate strikes on the enemy until the threat alert reaches DEFCON 3.

The real defcon counts up, not down. They made the same mistake in War Games.

Edit: Or maybe not, according to wikipedia. Odd, in the commentary of War Games, they said (after speaking to actual defcon people) that they had made a mistake in the movie. *shrug*
 
Man, I can't wait for this game. It's also great to see an indie game like DEFCON score such big coverage on a site like IGN. Here's hoping Introversion stays indie and pumps out original more stuff like this for years to come.
 
I was on this site all day yesterday just like... omfgwtfwhencaniorderthis... for anyone with a coldwar fetish, this is going to be awesome. 8 hour realtime game... boss key... i sense a lack of productivity at work coming...

Love the games style, and for people with shit computers this will run on just about anything.
 
Man, I hope the Mac version will be out in November as roadmapped. btw, I put up a small frappr map in the online section to see the future victims of mine! :D

No kidding, $10 is a pittance for what looks to be an original and awesome ass game.

In terms of future plans? We'd love to release games on other platforms; something that wouldn't have been remotely feasible five years ago when we started is now becoming much more of a reality. Our next game? Well, cunning observers of Introversion's past would probably be able to infer roughly what we planned for the fourth game if they thought about it hard enough. What we now call "The Fourth Game" was actually the game I was developing immediately after Uplink's launch, and it was being developed side by side with Darwinia at one point. It was put on hold while Darwinia was finished and released, and it has remained on hold while this little wargame 'DEFCON' was finished. It's been floating around our company for five years now, and it's had the most thinking time of all our games so far.

Suffice to say it's going to be awesome.

I bought it for $17.50 at Introversion's site so I could get a physical and digital copy. I think it's worth the extra $7.50.

Is this game worth it on my old desktop; P4 1.6MHZ, 512 Rambus RAM, GeForce2 MX???

Seems like a simple stragedy game with no heavy graphics but I do not want a title that will slow down on my system.
