IGN goes hands on with Fragile [Wii]

http://wii.ign.com/articles/947/947807p1.html

Within the first few minutes of starting play, you learn of main character Seto's goal: to make his way to a red tower far to the east. There, he'll apparently be able to find another person. This is a big deal, because aside from Seto, the world appears to be populated by nothing but ghosts.

Seto heads out from his home (actually an observatory) and almost immediately encounters the white-haired heroine, Ren. He appears to fall for her, so when she heads off on her own, his goal becomes to reunite with her.

I'm currently in pursuit of Ren, and my adventures have taken me to an abandoned subway, an abandoned amusement park, and, most recently, an abandoned hotel. The key word is abandoned.

Seto does manage to make new "acquaintances" in all these locations, though. His first encounter is with P.F. (Personal Frame), a computer that attaches to Seto's back and provides guidance. Later, he counters Kurou, the guy in yellow and purple who looks like he's from a Persona game.

There's a common theme with all these encounters. Rather than sticking around through the end of the game, the sub-characters usually part ways after a bit, usually accompanied by a lengthy farewell that suggests they won't be coming back.

Regardless, you get a good chance to get to know the characters. This can be done directly through dialogue, notably with P.F., who talks with an awful lot of personality for a computer. Other characters reveal their background more gradually through items that you find scattered about. Take these items to a bonfire -- the game's equivalent of a save point, where you can manage your inventory and purchase items -- and you'll get to hear a dialogue sequence involving the item and usually offering insight into the current character.

It might be surprising to learn that Seto keeps on encountering other characters as he explores a ghost world. With all these interesting personalities to interact with, how could be possibly be lonely? You'll have to figure that out for yourself.

The part of IGN's preview that wasn't quoted here suggests the game has numerous issues with combat and camera, though they're made up for largely by the intriguing story.

Sounds shitty from a gameplay perspective, and how the fuck could someone working for IGN actually type "dieing"?

Did that dumbass fucking writer just give a fucking huge spoiler away with that thinly veiled hint in the last sentence?

What the fuck man. >:( >:(

Wait, are they previewing a localized build or the original JP version?

If localized, then woohoo - if original JP version, then localize this fast, Scamco!!

I wish this was like Courage the Cowardly Dog, with Seto running away like a pussy from ghosts with PF being a smart-alec all the time. "Stupid Seto!"

Edit: Did they use an anorexic model for the girl? That is one skinny bitch.

bad controls, bad camera.

:(

how many gens of 3d games is it going to take before this stuff gets figured out?

soo wanted this to be a good game, and it seems they've turned it into a movie.

Too bad it bombed on release day. Maybe it'll be a good thing as they need to localize it to recoup their costs.

Yeah, Aoi Teshima has a lovely voice.

Combat- I don't care, doesn't seem to be the big draw.

Cam- . . . I can deal with it >_>

16000 on the first day with a 45% sell-through in one of the lowest months of the year is not bad. Well, not that bad.

So 13000 for Left 4 Dead, a western FPS on Xbox 360, it's fuck awesome then?...

I supose after Sky Crawlers, people was expecting a failure of the same magnitude, so this comes as good sales? or not so bad sales?

Is that in-game? If it is, it's surely beautiful, the game sure looks a lot better when we saw the first screenshots.

I assure you Left 4 Dead cost a shitload of a lot more money than Fragile. I mean, these are not astounding numbers, and I wouldn't call them decent either, but a bomb this is not (yet).

That's from the opening FMV.

Well, if you're the only guy for miles around, and you see a cute girl dressed like that. Of course you'd fall for her lol.

Aside from that, the game seems more interesting each time I hear something new.

...The key word is abandoned...

Please tell me this means devoid of intelligent life,(has plenty of monsters) and not just empty, bland space.

I'll settle for "abandoned as empty with incredible environments though."

The event sequences for these character encounters have been a bit over the top, with lots of crying and forced emotion. It's total bait for a laughable localization unless handled with extreme care.

shiiiiittt

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but has a US release been confirmed yet? I emailed XSEED, and they said they are currently discussing a US release.

It means devoid of any other living person, basically.

On the 360 in Japan, hell yes

Unless it completely dies after 1st day it should sell out or close to sell out its 1st shipment, which when looking at the track record of the company that put it out its much better than Sky Crawlers

This game is much closer to Fatal Frame in genre imho and that managed to only sell between 60-75k on Wii (and surpassed all previous Fatal Frames on the mighty PS2)...so thats where I think expectations should lie

hmmm ok. I'm hype for the game, so far it looks like some solid effort is behind this one...I'll remain cautiously optimistic :)

It's too bad that this game has not so great controls. I am still interested in it, though. If it ever comes out in English I'll definitely play it at least for the story and atmosphere.

On the flip side...if the controls are utter shite...it's difficult to really justify a purchase, being on Wii and what not...

...bitch bastard controls? The story/dub had better be phenomenal for me to take interest, I'm sold on the artwork already though...I think we're on the same boat :)

Just read that sells link . . .I didn't even know the game was released in Japan now 0_o

Anyway, it sold 45% of it's shipping in it's first day so I don't think its doing poorly (not that I care about Japan's love for it. NMH has showned that regardless of JPNs love of a new low key IP title it can still reach success in the west. So regardless . . . they should bring it over here!)

+1 :(

I seriously want this game. If this gets localized, it just might be the one that makes me go get a Wii (and really, finding one isn't very hard).

The graphics style look pretty inspired by the Kingdom Hearts movement, which has been followed by the likes of Tales of Symphonia 2. I hope this continues.
