IGN made a list of the Top 100 modern games

I really don´t understand Mass Effect 2´s greatness. I own it, have beaten it, and I quite like it. But in no way would I consider it among the best games I have played. I wouldn´t put it in a top 10 RPG list even. It has good characters, good graphics, a well written game universe, and competent gameplay. The missions, the RPG mechanics, the ending. It´s just bad.

It´s an 7-8/10 game. Not a 10/10.

The capriciousness is going to make my brain explode.

The Top 10 just screams trolling for hits.

Seems like they write 'articles' now purely for the N4G exposure.

Bioshock at #2? lol.

It was such an ass of a game :p
Nah...it wasn't that bad and I'm not a fan. It was way to easy though which killed the suspense. It felt like you were going through a ride at Disney. The best part of the game was the big daddys. They were the only somewhat difficult enemies in Bioshock. So I took it upon myself to set up elaborate traps and setups to take them down. Made the game slightly above average just from that.

That's my take as well though I would say "competent" is really generous. I prioritize gameplay first and everything else is an afterthought. I thought ME's gameplay was boring, unintuitive, and sloppy. With that, even the best graphics, sound, narrative, etc... can't turn the tables. Every time I ask an ME fan to justify what's great about the gameplay I get the same run-around. The conclusion is usually "it just is!" kind of silliness.

I love how these threads are always such a circle jerk of hate yet we have people saying stupid fucking things like Bioshock and SMG are terrible.

RRRAAAWWWWRRR STOP HAVING OPINIONS THAT ARE DIFFERENT TO MINE IGN WRITERS!!!

I know IGN makes some pretty bad lists, but this one takes the cake.

I mean, c'mon, no Bayonetta? Really? And they included things like Brain Age?

At least they had the decency to add TWEWY and CoH...

I like how everybody misses that Peacewalker represents the entire MGS franchise.
Are these games supposed to represent the best of the franchise then? OP isn't clear on it and I'm sure not giving IGN any hits for something so appalling.

Most recent entry in the franchise. That's why VC2 is on there.

nah, people with good taste know that SMG is boring and Bioshock is "pretty good" at best.

Explain Bioshock and Gears of War, then.

Bioshock 1 and 2 are made by separate developers so they might have viewed it as such. As for Gears of War, no clue.

Edit:Looking at the list more closely it looks like they picked the best game from each franchise. Valkyria Chroncles it seems was just a huge fuck up. I have no fucking clue how they can argue 2 is better than 1 .

Bioshock had a nice storytelling and a few great scenes, also the first hours are creepier than most Survival Horror games, but then gunplay and level design lacks too much to be put so high.

And Mass Effect 2? I'm a big fan of the series and completed the game several times but that's a joke, the game even isn't a very good shooter. The story sucks and features several flaws (mining minigame, anyone? to be the best modern game....

And well the rest of the list.... game journalism at is finnest.

Also, 70-71 western games against 30-29 japanese games....

I like how everyone is going ape shit over a list of opinions, as if their top 100 game list is somehow more objective.

Anyways, I would put Gears and MGS4 up in the top 10. If I were making this list I would think about the games that had an impact on me and also the gaming community/industry. Bioshock was a surprise to me as well def one of my favorite games I play this gen. I would move U2 to top 5 as well.

is Bioshock more modern than Undying? I really don't comprehend the love for bioshock. It is actually a step backward from Deus Ex, at least the 5-6 hours that I played before giving up on it were. I couldn't die, puzzles were too basic, no exploration, no secret way of doing anything. And from the second I started playing I knew that whom to suspect as the real culprit, a hunch which I later learned to be correct. Big Daddies were awesome though.

I believe it was a gem among CoD parade of shooters that were spawned in this gen, but comparing it to the heritage of fps on PC, it's not that much of a good game.

Who cares about someone's damn list, really. It's not like people would like your list any more.
Okay, close the thread people! Close all the opinionated forums as well, hell close down all of the internet!

What of the Zelda then?

I don't give a damn about IGN lists as well, but it is usually nice hearing people defending/or being against the choices made on the list.

Not even close.

More like "Top 10 games that are really hot right now and then we throw some chum for everyone else"

Or "Top games wherein the publicist winked at me and if we promote their game enough maybe I'll get to see them naked."

I'm a cynic today.

If I woke from a coma and I asked a person what games I should start playing and he says angry birds is better than demon souls, league of legends and crysis. I would probably have to kill him. It would be God's work, right?

You won't have to, because this list is a suggested play order, not a measure of comparable quality.

This is pretty standard for IGN. Though opinion is always up to interpretation. These lists IGN does and the timeliness of them are puzzling.

Than they should just get rid of the numbers and just say hey here is a bunch of games you might want to play. I guess that wouldn't give them the hits though, got to love game journalism.

Edit: Actually playing demon's souls first is a great idea. If you had to play Mass Effect 2 right before it, you wouldn't give demon's souls a fair shot because its way to hard. At least this way you'll think boy games this gen are difficult but also rewarding, and then just be disappointed.

Not to bitch and moan about a list that is inherently subjective, but where are Bayonetta and Vanquish? :(
Didn't you hear, I thought everyone heard, Bayonetta just isn't good enough to make it on a list with Angry Birds and Resistance 2.

What makes no sense are some of the genre picks. I like God of War 3 and they placed it at 46. I am not a big fan of Bayonetta but how the hell does it not even make one of the spots above or below it? I seriously don't even like the game compared to most action titles out there but it would probably still make my top 100. Really doesn't add up.

Bad IGN lists are nothing new but they accidentally switched #100 and #1. Seriously, I'm playing ME2 for the first time right now and while it's..good..I'd rate way more games above it than below it.

One of the problems with lists like these is that they create situations in which apples are compared to oranges. That being said, I think IGN even made some really puzzling decisions when it came to came to comparing apples to apples. To be more specific, I cannot fathom how anyone would rate New Super Mario Bros. at #15 while the vastly superior New Super Mario Bros. Wii was nowhere to be seen. NSMBW was better in every conceivable way.

If we are to assume that the DS game was chosen because IGN considered it to be more historically significant, then I would like to know why games like Portal 2, Galaxy 2, and Wii Sports Resort were chosen instead of their innovative predecessors. It makes absolutely no sense to me why NSMBW wouldn't be on that list.

The problem here is that it seems that, while most here agree IGN's list sucks, people disagree over why it sucks and they have contradictory opinions over what should be on the list.

Instead of continuing to complain about it... why not make a NeoGAF list of the best current-gen games? Maybe make it top 25 or 50 so it's not so daunting. Let's see if there can be consensus beyond "IGN sucks at lists".

People bitch about ME2 being #1 but rarely say what they think should be #1 so their choice can be ridiculed.
