IGN Review - Final Fight: Streetwise (PS2)

Oh dear.

This is SO unfortunate.

Holy shit, is Cammy in the game? I'm sure that's supposed to be Maki...right?
The worst part of this is the game for a while had dropped to twenty, but just got released at 40!

Has there ever been a good 3D brawler? I really can't remember one. Even the highly touted "The Bouncer" was a major letdown. By brawler I mean a true brawler, not just action-heavy games like God of War.

The Warriors?

Ryu Ga Gotoku is apparently the one to do the genre justice, I can't friggin wait for it to come out over here. Urban Reign was decent in the demo, I could see myself paying 10 or so for it. Beatdown, from the demo, no way. I think I payed 15 for Spikeout and felt ripped off.

3.5 Presentation
Cut-scenes are generally boring, though at one point Kyle makes a hilariously ill-timed decision to answer his cell phone. The camera is awful.
2.0 Graphics
A few interesting character models. Other than that this game looks like someone dumped chocolate ice cream on moldy cardboard.
4.5 Sound
An entertaining soundtrack can't compensate for utterly uninspired sound effects. If I'm going to spend all game cracking jaws, it needs to at least sound fearsome.
4.5 Gameplay
A decent fighting system is hurt by the camera, several insufferable mini-games and downright stupid enemy A.I.
2.0 Lasting Appeal
The arcade mode is boring and there's no way you'd ever replay the story mode. The bonus materials provide a slight incentive.
3.6 Bad

If you divide the game's final score by 2 instead of 5 you get an 8.3

How's that for Damage Control?

Personally, I've never played a 3D brawler that I've liked as much as the classics (Double Dragon, Final Fight, and Streets of Rage), but Sega has put outsome fun BEUs like Die Hard Arcade, Dynamite Cop, Zombie Revenge, and the Spikeout games (wasn't feeling the Xbox version though), and as of late, I've enjoyed Urban Reign from Namco. It's a very challenging game, which leads to some people whining because they can't just mash through it, but it's worth a look.

Then of course, as TToB mentioned, there's all the Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors games. I've only barely tried it out, but Bandai's Samurai Champloo game also looks like it has some potential. There was an older BEU released a few years back from the company formerly known as Jaleco on the PS2, but I can't remember the name of it right now (brain fart!). It wasn't too bad.

Best BEU of this gen is still Double Dragon Advance for the GBA, though. Kills everything else. Sengoku 3 on the Neo-Geo (released in 2001) also rocked, but those are both 2D BEUs...

Funny thing is that I still see it being for sale at a few websites...even with a pressing of less then 4000, SOA still made too many copies. :lol

It's readily available at Fry's for $30. I wonder if Sega upped the print run?

Wasn't Streetwise going to be sold at a budget-price? I coulda swore I saw sites listing it at $20 initially. Imagine my surprise to see it on shelves yesterday at $39.99. Talk about the ultimate in buyer's remorse. Or perhaps a tax on the ignorant?

It was a price mistake on ebgames.com
