IGN Sonic Unleashed Blog: Hedgehog Engine

Those ice physics look like a pain in the ass, the player is constantly fighting them, and I wouldn't be so quick to call this one unskilled.

I remember bitching about how terribly the IGN people played the boarding levels in Sonic 2006 videos, thinking they were idiots who couldn't grasp the basic snowboard controls that have been around since Sonic Adventure, until I actually played the levels myself and realized it was Sonic Team who screwed up something that had worked fine for them in 3D as long ago as 1998.

I blame the havok engine. If they had used their internal engine but updated it for the PS3/360 hardware, I think 2006 would have played a lot better.

Exactly. When I saw Sonic 2006 one of the first things that came to mind right after the abomination that was Shadow is that they should just upgrade the engine from SA or SA2 to work with 360.

No, they could have had it playing fine in the Havok engine with a little more time and work.

There was one piece of DLC for Sonic 2006 I bought, Team Attack Amigo. It had you running through reversed stages with new enemy alignments as Tails, Blaze, and Omega. What's depressing is Tails noticeably plays better in the DLC than he does in the normal game. They could have fixed many of the control issues, they just didn't have the time or staff.

I dunno. The part where he jumped right into that electric obstacle could've been avoided by just jumping earlier. Especially since he already had momentum from the ice.

"You dont have to play that bit, its shit though" isnt a compelling argument for a game I consider already 50% shitty via the horrendous looking compulsary Hog of War segments. That dumb chihuahua doesnt factor as a new friend or that all the other idiots were confirmed to show up in some way? This game only managed to avoid the cycle straight out because of the Werehog leak. Had Sega been able to keep it a secret as they so desperately tried afterwards, this game would have been the very DEFINITION of the cycle. "Oh wow, 2d Sonic gameplay, just Sonic oh wow" -> months pass -> "what is... werehog...what...oh god"

Its not so much the cycle not having come to pass but rather the willful ignorance most Sonic fans inject themselves with months before release.

Ok he shouldn't have used the words he used but, jebus, chill :lol

Wow. I think once a mod sees this you might be getting a new tag.

Dude this is a Sonic thread...it's like kryptonite to mods (like 360 threads heheh).

I just realized that it's nearly the 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY of me getting my Japanese DC and Sonic Adventure. You should have seen me and my complaints back then on Dimension-S!

For the record I just want to maintain that I am the only one who can do Sonic justice in 3D, and again I will give you all the opportunity to sign the petition that has been around for 5 years or so:

Petition to make FightyF the lead designer of the next Sonic game:

Fight for Freeform
Economan

You all claim that you want Sonic to be better blah blah but only 1 signature in 5 years...disappoints me. You all talk the talk, but don't walk the walk.

:P

Whoa, back up a minute.

When Sonic gets hit in Holoska, he doesn't lose all his rings - he only loses 20.

Is this the new standard, now? Because, I dunno. That seems pretty dumb to me.

Its a compromise they make for the crazy speeds they have you running at. That and they're being family friendly with the difficulty...

"Rings as a health bar" never really did it for me.

Pretty much, yeah. I mean, when he gets hit it doesn't even look like he has a chance to pick them back up, either. How rings function is one of those core Sonic tenants that should never be messed with.

Hmmm, is there anything that are still untouched?

Eventually I believe sonic will evolve(?) to this:

Besides your admittedly insightful backseat developing, I have absolutely no clue if you'd actually be qualified for such a task. I myself haven't seen anything that would convince me that Sonic's future would actually benenfit from your involvement. Not a single shred of concrete evidence has been presented letting me know the series would be better off in the hands of an outsider such as yourself...

Sign me up.

All this effort on reviving Sonic when the platform franchise Sega SHOULD be be focusing on bringing back is obviously...
PSYCHO FOX!!!

Fun trivia: Decap Attack for the Genesis was originally a
Psycho Fox
sequel of sorts in Japan, which they edited and reworked into the mummy/monster theme for the US and apparently Europe.

Are you sure it won't be more like this?

Hmph, that makes sense. Especially when I look at the "special stages." Neat.

Well sure, but time and work wasn't in Sammy's agenda.

I'm saying if they did want to rush the game out the door they should have just re-used the engine from the GameCube games.

YES WE CAN!

As nerdy as this sounds, I'm having a really hard time getting over this thing with the rings.

It was fine in Secret Rings, 'cause that was a spinoff. But if that's the new standard... might as well not even be a Sonic game anymore, really. That was, to me, one of the last things they hadn't totally changed from the Genesis games and I was happy with that.

Eeeehhh.....
