IGN Sonic Unleashed Blog: Hedgehog Engine

Yeah I think this is a cool game. I like Sonic. I like Hedgehogs. The color blue is nice. The color blue has received some criticism as of late but maybe this will push blue back into the limelight with more popular colors like pink and orange. However, I specifically remember a preview for blue around this time before the launch of the last blue that said it would be good, and we all know how that turned out. Oh well, I miss the days of blue in the 90s.

PS- Just picked up Brown at ColorStop! Its sweet!

I’ve been asked a lot of times if “Sonic is going back to its roots” in interviews. My answer is always “No.”Sonic Unleashed still retains the spirit from his Genesis days, which is his origin. But it’s only one of the many amazing qualities of Sonic Unleashed. We are learning from and taking good bits from his origin but we are not “going back” at all. And actually, I wanted to “go beyond” the origin.

I’m confident that this one is so good that everyone will say “Sonic is back!” This title has the best of SEGA, the passion of the Sonic Team.

What did I backtrack on?

You came into this thread arguing that Sonic Adventure/Unleashed is good because it got a good gamerankings score or because its had favorable previews. Also you went on how essentially those who didn't favor "speed" sonic were being silly. But when countered with comparative previews and opposing opinions who went on to claim that previewers were "entitled" to their opinion and how opinions were just that.

Sonic Unleashed could end up being fantastic, its very possible and would be quite a happy surprise. But positive previews don't prove this nor does it remove the fact that some disconcering information is starting to appear about this game.

You keep on trying to "pwn" me and are just coming off as a sketchy weirdo.

people use the buddy list? :O

People are missing the overall point. Sonic the Hedgehog NeXt Gen was made by a team other than Sonic Team.

Sonic Adv and Unleashed are made by Sonic Team JPN aka the real one.

Don't argue with the most ridiculous of Sonic fools. Being a huge Sonic fan, I've seen what that community can offer. Run the fuck away.

Actually, Sonic 2006's development team = Sonic Unleashed's development team

Sonic Team Japan
-Sonic Adventure
-Sonic 2006
-Sonic Unleashed
-Sonic and the Secret Ring
-Sonic and the Black Knight

Sonic Team US
-Sonic Adventure 2
-Sonic Heroes
-Shadow the Hedgehog

I came onto this thread saying that the prediction that a Sonic game will be bad because it's fast is ridiculous. And it's quite frankly something I haven't seen before. On the contrary I've seen lots of people on other sites saying "Sonic needs to be faster like he was in the good old days" I check here and people are saying that Sonic needs to be slower like he was in the good old days.

Previews don't prove that a game will be good. But when at this stage they're so widely positive across the board, from gamers to professionals there's no reason to not be optimistic. This situation has not existed for a recent Sonic game. IGN gave an initially unfavorable opinion. Unlike with Sonic 2006, they didn't excuse the buggyness of the early builds. However now they're saying that the game has improved, the framerate problems are gone etc.

And mainly the impressions and previews are just confirming what I've thought of the game since I first saw it. How it all comes together is a different matter. And some people seem more comfortable to write that the game will suck whether they believe that or not.

The fact is the Sonic fanbase is outrageously fragmented. Large segments are calling for completely different things as the idea game. The fact that the response among people who've played the game hands on has been so widely positive is the best that can be asked for at this stage. How will it turn out in the end? I don't know, but I'm optimistic.

Also, Sonic Unleashed has a new director and I believe the design team is completely different this time around.

I can't think of anything that's come up just recently that hasn't been known since at least around E3. And they've apparently managed to fix the framerate, which is the first time I can remember a technical issue in the series being addressed between preview builds ever. If you didn't like the concept back in July, then nothing's changed, and if you did then there's actually been a bit of good news. I don't really care one way or the other unless I suddenly buy a console or Sega Europe does another PC port, but it doesn't seem like there's much left to question at this point.

And yeah, Sonic Team USA/Sega Studio USA was put out of our misery according to Senoue.

Rumor has it they've been disbanded since then
Didn't they also help on SRA? I could have sworn that when the mini-site went up, it said that Sega Studios USA was working on it (Though Dimps OBVIOUSLY made the game).

I want old Sonic back. But I'll settle for flawed buy fun ala Sonic Adventure.

Actually, its like the preview Blueblur posted was written just for me :)

I don't think they did. If anything Sonic Team Japan helped.

The Site doens't mention Sonic Team US either (not that they label them differently of course): http://www2.sega.com/gamesite/sonicrushadv/

EDIT: Rush's music is so awesome

The Rivals games, yes, though I think that was mostly limited to Iizuka stopping by once in a while to further ruin their designs. All of the Dimps titles have been supervised by ST Japan.

I suppose its possible that everyone who posted their impressions in forums and boards for the game was a secret sega operative but I doubt it. In other words I've read plenty of impressions from gamers who've played the game and said it was fantastic. Even if they hadn't I would still be saying it looks amazing because it really does.

And yes, complaining that a Sonic game fundamentally shouldn't be fast, should use the Mario engine and whatnot is pretty weird.
Forums and boards? How about a link to said boards? I didn't even know the general public was able to play a build of the game other than at TGS.

Of course a Sonic game shouldn't be super-fast with no platforming. Did you even play the first few Sonic games? Nobody says it should use the Mario engine. 2D Sonic games and 2D Mario games had vastly different level designs.

It was Sega Studios, not SS USA. My mistake.

Nishiyama wanted to make a comparison for those looking for elements of traditional Sonic gameplay. He likened the brawling elements to the difference between the speedy Sonic and the more physical Knuckles. So all Sonic fans have to do is think of the werehog as a bigger, furrier Knuckles who happens to have extendable arms.

Nishiyama said frankly that both Sonic Team and Sega wondered whether the introduction of Sonic the Werehog was the right direction for their mascot franchise to take. But ultimately that Sonic is "all about the challenge and trying something new."

One of the team's oft-repeated mantras is that there's a certain "tempo" to every aspect of Sonic Unleashed, and that includes everything from how often the camera switches perspectives to the decision to go with two different styles of gameplay. Essentially, Nishiyama said, introducing the brawling aspect was an attempt to keep the speed elements from getting old too quickly.

He gets it, but he doesn't.

If we're supposed to imagine the Werehog as Knuckles, why not make it Knuckles? Do sort of a "Sonic & Knuckles 2", where it's just the two of them again and they team up. I'm sure that would have been vastly better received than the Werehog.

Sonic is about "trying something new" alright - usually at the expense of fixing existing problems. There was shit in Sonic 2006 that people had been constantly complaining about, in every 3D Sonic game, since 1999. Problems that had existed for seven years! Eight, if you count the 1998 release in Japan.

Introducing brawling to keep speed from getting old is also pretty bullshit, if you ask me. If people are getting bored running around as Sonic, you don't introduce a completely different gametype - you add more variety to the existing gametype. That's like having Super Mario Galaxy and instead of diversifying how you interact with levels, you leave all the Mario stuff be super generic and then you add in random-ass FPS sections for no reason.

Bleh.

I think the only reason why the werehog is REALLY there is Ristar experimentation. Five bucks says they use the Sonic engine for a new Ristar eventually. Even one of the team members was the head guy on the Ristar team.

Perhaps they were just using the name as a cover word for Dimps

Well they already ruined Sonic and Nights so I guess making a new Ristar would complete the trifecta

What I got out of it was "We decided to make this part of the game really REALLY shitty so that the other part of the game looked fun".

Personally, I'd love a proper Sonic Adventure 3. With Chao raising and all.

Sega should just create a Chao-raising game for the DS to tap into the Nintendogs and Petz market. They would be making bazillions from day one.

I absolutely refuse to believe even SonicTeam would make something bad on purpose.

They're just really, really ignorant.

All very good points. To me, the werehog thing just comes off as a way to force the new gameplay mechanics onto Sonic himself. As if to say, "See, no shitty friends here! You get to play as Sonic for the whole game! Happy?"

On the variety subject, if they noticed that the non-stop racetrack-like speed runs could easily get repetitive, shouldn't that inspire the team to enhance the core gameplay? Just expanding the level design itself would be a step in the right direction. I dunno, it's just that totally fragmenting the gameplay in that manner seems like a weird solution.

I don't understand why it has to be a one-niche-at-a-time kind of deal, instead of a seamless epic experience. S3+K had plenty of depth in that regard.

Firestorm said:

What I got from that is that "We think that the running gameplay is nowhere near good enough to sustain itself over an entire game so we want to change it up for half the game"

Basically, it's the same shit they've been doing since Sonic Adventure.

If it isn't shitty controls, the Werehog will be the downfall of this game. Who the fuck thought that was a good idea.

The funny part is even they hesitated according to the interview. Yet, they put it in anyway.

Out of all the trailers shown so far, I think this looked the most fun. I actually have to consider looking at the review of wii vs. next gen this time. At least they put some effort into this one, giving rings collecting the right sound.

I don't like the animation he has when he's light-dashing (it looks strange), but it's not a bad trailer. The odd thing is that I know the Wii and PS3/360 versions are functionally identical, save for motion controls and some varying stage design elements, and the HUD, but I like something about the Wii's presentation of it all better. Maybe it's the HUD's constant goading for the player to go faster and beat the time for grades, counting the linked actions, et cetera. It also seems more straightforward about what it wants the player to do. I expected to just get the 360 version, but now I'm unsure.

Watching that Halloween special did two things t me. It reminded me of when Sonic was just an awesome character for no real reason and made me realize that Tails should have played the role that Chip does now. I mean seriously, the position was there (scared younger sidekick character) so why not go for the old routine?

i actually hope this is bad so i, not missing anything when i never play it.

the last game was that bad. the last 4 games where that bad. maybe more. i lost count.

The guys that do the FM<V animation for Sega are insanely talented, I'm glad they're letting them go all out with a short film, as their cut scenes tend to be the highlights of most Sega games now. The intros they did for Sega Superstars Tennis and Mario & Sonic sold the games for me before I had even seen them, and the endings they did for Nights: JOD were beautiful. If there was ever to be a animated sonic feature film, these guys should be the ones to do it.
