Its time to move on sadly. The current Sonic Team views the Adventure games as the pinnacle of the series and has no plans to go back :/
What is wrong with this? I do not agree with them, but is it wrong for them to keep looking forward? Sure they have stumbled, but what makes the 2D Speed-Based dimps style games so unbareable? I am not saying that you brought it up, I did, but just because it ISN'T the 16-bit Sonic, why does it mean that it is bad? Them moving forward could be great, no one knows what the future holds. I am through getting mad at past fail games like 06 and even ports of arguably decent games like Sonic Adventure DX, which was a very shitty port. Fuck that, I am looking forward to what they bring.

If that puts me in a Sonic fan minority, so be it. I loved the classics, I love the Speed-based 2D games, and there have been d sonic games I have been a fan of as well. If it is fun and not shit, I will play it, no matter how different it is from the original. Old Sonic is not new Sonic, but that is okay with me (For the most part with non-shit games).

I am sorry, it just pisses me off, and I originally thought Unleashed looked like shit to boot, now I actually want it!

Huelen, I can understand where you come from. Thing is, it's just not ever going to be something recognizable by the fans as Sonic done right unless they remember and honor the past while adding the new elements to it. I think that's all I can explain it as without going down another long winded rant.

Big is the only bad character in SA1 and that's only because the fishing mechanics suck.
I agree.

I'm surprised by some of the opinions in here. I though both SA1 and SA2 were fantastic. The treasure mechanic was a hard pill to swallow in SA1 but it was only a few levels. The treasure hunting levels and the mechanic were much more refined in SA2.

Personally, I'd love a proper Sonic Adventure 3. With Chao raising and all.

Sonic = .8
Tails = .75
Knuckles = .6
Amy = .5
E-102 = .65
Big = 0

(.8 + .75 + .6 + .5 + .65 + 0)/6 = 3.3

3.3 - 1 (for the camera) - .3 (for the hub world) = 2 out of 6 = 35%

2 - 1 (for comparison purposes) = 1/6 = 5/6 crap

--------------------------------------------------------

Sonic & Shadow = .8
Tails & Eggman = .6
Knuckles & Rouge = .6

(.8 + .6 + .6)/3 = 2

2 - .5 (for various technical problems and such) = 1.5 out of 3 = 3 out of 6 = 50%

3 -1 (for comparison purposes) = 2/6 = 1/3 = 2/3 crap

;)

I was never a Sonic fan back in the day but I'm curious about the whole speed vs. platforming debate. Are you guys looking for a return to the old days where running fast was for pros only, and if you ever ran full speed in your first dozen times through, the game would kick you square in the nuts before tossing you into a pit of spikes? I went back and played the original on VC and found it absolutely infuriating. Even SMB1 was much faster and with less frustrating stop-start going on.

Play Sonic 3+Knuckles first, then re-evaluate the bolded parts. Seriously speaking, coming into Sonic fresh now with Sonic 1 might not be the best of ideas for most people. Still, it's not like Sonic 1 is ghastly by any stretch of the imagination.

Also, yes to answer your question, I want that sense of challenging level design, marble physics, and platforming back. If they could strike a balance between those aspects and the speed aspects without dividing the two (a la Werehog & Sonic from hands on reports) then I'm game.

You're in the wrong topic then.

Everyone I've seen who's actually played the game rather than preemptively viewing it through some ideological goggles that say it has to be exactly like such and such and such or it's automatically poor, has said it was fantastic.

The sonic fanbase is so fragmented it really doesn't matter what they do, people will complain. I mean there are actually people in this topic saying that it's bad because Sonic is moving fast rather than slowly jogging.

Right now the game looks great and is getting extremely positive press both from, the press, as well as from gamers who've played it at conventions.

One of the games on display tonight at Microsoft's post-press-briefing event at X06 is Sonic the Hedgehog. The new entry in the series marks Sonic's next-gen debut and promises an original adventure for the veteran mascot. Our previous looks at the game have offered us brief glimpses at what Sonic Team is promising will be a rich new experience that focuses on Sonic and Silver, a new hedgehog with psychic powers. The demo once again trotted out Sonic and Silver, and it also added Shadow to the mix.

29ay4b9.jpg

Characters have their own unique play mechanics to give them distinct handling, which were shown to good effect as you ran all three characters through the same level. Your goal was to simply make it through an enemy-infested set of ruins, which required you to get creative with the three characters. When playing as Sonic, the emphasis is on his speed and the ensuing cool moves it makes possible. The veteran hedgehog has all his key moves and makes short work of the foes in his stylish way. Sonic's homing attack and trademark speed are in full effect. Despite Shadow originally appearing to be Sonic's equal in abilities, the ebon hedgehog now has his own unique abilities that are quite different than his debut. Besides skating at high speeds, the hedgehog has special attacks to deal with mechanoids and a powerful special attack that's powered by chaos energy. Newcomer Silver offers a complete change of pace from the speedy hogs by harnessing the power of his mind and using psychokinesis to knock around enemies and warp the environment around him.

309twxz.jpg

The game's control aims to be accessible and does so fairly well, though we've noticed some challenges in the experience. On the plus side, the game's control is intuitively laid out and generally responsive. Of the rough spots, the game's camera can be a handful while in the heat of battle. You can move it around as you play, but the movement isn't as smooth or speedy as we'd hoped. The other noticeable issue is the hedgehog handling in the game. Given everyone's unique handling, the cast can be unwieldy at times, which can be a problem when navigating the various obstacles that you'll encounter, often while moving at high speeds or jumping.

The visuals in the game were looking sharp and continue to improve every time we see them. The trio of hedgehogs looks good and they all move well, with each featuring distinctive animation that lend personality. Sonic powers through levels, Shadow skates, and Silver has a saunter. The same holds true for their abilities, each of which have unique special effects. The environments were spacious, disjointed, MC Escher-esque collections of playable areas that were in keeping with the style of the previous games, but they have been expanded to take advantage of what the 360 can do.

n4iats.jpg

Based on what we played, Sonic the Hedgehog is shaping up to be a unique entry in the series. We haven't seen the playable roster of characters in a Sonic game so active in a good long while. We appreciate the game's attempt to be different than the previous entries in the series, and we're curious to see how these pieces mesh in the final game. To date, we've only seen these action sequences and haven't been able to check out the town levels yet. If all goes according to plan, Sonic the Hedgehog will live up to its potential of reinvigorating the classic franchise for a new set of consoles. Look for more on Sonic the Hedgehog in the months leading up to its November launch.

Except that what's getting positive press with Sonic Unleashed is the near final build. As that game got closer to release, previews trashed it. As opposed to Sonic Unleashed which has seen expectations growing and growing.

People are basically playing the final game right now, and saying its awesome.

Damn you grandjedi6 for stealing my thunder :(

Also see this, this, and, just for kicks, this is basically a mirror image of these topics.

So forgive me for erring on the side of caution, k?

Don't be so quick to defend Unleashed, buddy. You might regret it.

And that preview was published a little under two months before Sonic 2006's release date. They may have had a near final build and I'm sure Ricardo Torres was being overly positive because it was a preview. He's a pretty nice guy.

Edit: It was an old E3 build. Oops. Doesn't change much though. An early eversion of a crappy game should be an even shittier version.

So, your argument to disregard the fact that multiple levels of Sonic Unleashed are being met with acclaim by reviewers and fans so late in development...is that Sonic 2006, which was trashed in previews at this stage in development, had an ambivalent early reception.

Let's be honest here, you're using strawmen. People are playing multiple levels of basically the finished game(Sonic Unleashed) and saying it's fantastic. Your argument is that the fact they enjoyed it is irrelevant as it doesn't fit your conception of what Sonic should be.

Sonic 2006 is in no way comparable, it was never at any point garnering close to the praise that Sonic Unleashed is.

Edit: In response to Blueblur, if the game is somehow bad, than so it is. I won't regret it, there's no reason to think it will be anything less than what these final previews are saying it will be at this point. People are using Sonic 2006 as an analogy but their receptions at this stage in development were no were/are completely different. People playing the early builds of Sonic 06 thought the bugs and handling would be fixed up by release, they weren't. People are playing Sonic Unleashed right now and saying it handles beautifully and smoothly.

By solidifying myself in one camp, I do not have this problem and the worst thing that can happen is that the game ends up being awesome, I end up eating crow, and I finally get to enjoy a non-portable Sonic game for the first time since the Dreamcast age. That sounds like a good deal to me!

It is tearing me apart for different reasons though. I don't know which will be more to my liking, Wii or HD. I don't have enough for both, but the Wii one looks a LOT more like Rush, which is what I love. Fuck camps, if I am having fun for what I payed for it, then that is really all that matters to me. Remember, I like Sonic on a Game-by-game basis.

Sonic Heroes
We take the near-final version for a test drive and return with detailed impressions, new screens and 13 direct-feed movies

December 5, 2003 - In January publisher Sega will release Sonic Heroes, the latest installment in its popular Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, for GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The 3D platformer marks the mascot's first wholly original new console endeavor since he made his mark on the now-defunct Dreamcast system. (Yeah, we know that ports of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 shipped for GCN, but these were merely updated versions of the aged Dreamcast titles.)

Sonic Heroes is fresh. It not only looks meaner and cleaner, crisper and shinier, but it moves faster, too, and it seems to be set in or around many of the colorful green, looping environments that layered the backgrounds in Sonic's classic Sega Genesis titles. Long-time fans of the series will no doubt feel some sense of nostalgia as they zip around these unpredictable 3D courses.

ideqgp.jpg

And yet, the gameplay dynamic has considerably changed. Yes, speed is still the biggest player, and it's when Sonic is zipping around the locales with a sound barrier-breaking ferocity that the game is most engaging and entertaining, but Sega has also injected a degree of strategy into the formula -- one that wasn't present in the Dreamcast titles. Of course, we're referring to the introduction of teams. In Heroes, players don't control one character, but three, and each contributes individual strengths that help defeat enemies and obstacles throughout the game.

Players can choose from four different groups including Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Chaotix and Team Rose. Team Sonic features everyone's favorite hedgehog, whose main abilities lie in speed, along with Tails, who can fly in short bursts and Knuckles, a mean echidna who isn't afraid to use his fists to crash open crates and destroy stone barriers. Team Dark features Shadow, an alternate (darker) version of Sonic, along with the destructive robot E-123 Omega and Rouge the Bat, whose wings help him soar. Next is Team Chaotix, which includes Espio the Chameleon, who can temporarily blend into environments and avoid enemies, Vector the Crocodile's sharp bite and Charmy Bee's flying prowess. Team Rose encapsulates Amy Rose, who zips along with her Piko Hammer, the powerful Big the Cat and Cream the Rabbit, who uses her ears to fly.

orihd1.jpg

While all of the team's feature different characters with seemingly unique abilities, they all seem to share the same attributes in common: one character is fast, another is powerful and the last can fly.

The stages -- which sometimes almost feel like courses -- are separated into two categories: speed and enemy fights/puzzle solving. It's smart to position faster characters like Sonic in the lead during the roller coaster-like track sequences as these revolve around speed. However, players will eventually come to structures too tall to jump and so they will have to switch to one of their flying characters such as Tails or Cream the Rabbit, who can then pick up and hover the other two team members over the hurdle. Meanwhile, some barriers can only be destroyed by the most powerful mascot, which typically means that gamers will have to rotate the order of their party so that the strongest member -- usually characters E-123 Omega and Knuckles -- can wreak havoc.

x5xbnb.jpg

Players can also execute their character's secondary moves by jumping and then pressing the action button in-air and these also prove very valuable. Sonic can create a mini-tornado that surrounds him and damages enemies. Knuckles can instantly hurl Sonic and Tails in a circular fashion, where they become fireballs and can likewise hurt or eliminate the opposition. And Tails can pick up and throw Sonic or Knuckles at opponents. The hedgehog can also jump and stick to walls, and then leap from side to side to progress over chasms while Knuckles can link his hands with both teammates to form a character pyramid of sorts, which allows all three to hover like parachuters over fan systems. There are more options available to the other characters in the game, all of them just as entertaining.

Heroes moves along at an impressive speed and many of the levels are saturated with twists, corkscrews, spirals and loops, not to mention pinball pads, ramps, jumps and cannons that jettison the characters into the air where they will often bounce into some kind of springy object and fly higher still. In short, it feels more like a classic Sonic title reborn in 3D, and this is for the most part a good thing. The strategic breaks for puzzle solving in levels is less intriguing, in our experience so far, but by no means as poorly integrated as some of the tedious sequences in the Dreamcast-based hedgehog incarnations.

63vzti.jpg

The GameCube version of Heroes -- which incidentally ships on January 5, three weeks before the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions -- runs in progressive scan and Dolby Pro Logic II and we expect that the Sony and Microsoft versions will sport similar technical features. Sonic fans will also be happy to know that this year's game moves at 60 frames per second -- a near-must to retain the frantic sensation of speed that helps make Sonic titles memorable.

We will of course delve further into Sonic Heroes, detailing more about the different teams, as well as the battle mode and mini-games, as we draw ever closer to the game. But in the meantime we've posted 13 revealing new direct-feed videos that show off many never-before-seen areas and scenarios from the anticipated platformer. Personally I didn't find Heroes too bad except for:
- having to do the levels 4 FUCKING TIMES
- the tv screens everywhere going "YOU SHOULD FLY NOW" and all around treating you like a moron
- having to do the levels 4 FUCKING TIMES
- aftertaste

It felt decent playing it, but afterwards I couldn't think of a single memorable moment.

Honestly? Just give me a game filled with City Escape, Radical Highway, those jungle levels, and the space levels in SA2. Those were fun as hell.

Sonic - Fun = Sonic Heroes.

I still say both the adventure games had alot of flaws to them. Yet they both managed to still be fun (alot of fun actually). Heroes? Not fun. The whincing happy go lucky feel, abysmal level design and the entire idea behind the team work mechanic made Heroes just plain boring.

It they'd just shipped the game as its Super Hard Mode with bosses, I imagine it would be somewhat better regarded. Still flawed, but moderately less so.

People are playing the game now and saying its running smooth, that the Sonic sections are great. It will come down to how polished it is and how well received the hub worlds and Werehog are. In no previews of Sonic 06 or Sonic Heroes was it described as anything like "Magic" or "Spectacular." And to my eyes at least, neither of those games, or either of the Sonic Adventures, have looked as appealing as this one

There's no point in arguing about the future. No one really knows how the game will be received in the end.

But this discussion has changed, what confused me originally was people complaining that the game was too fast, or wasn't exactly like this or exactly like that. Nothing to do with previews. As has been said, previews are mostly meaningless, and I would be optimistic about this title without the previews as well.

Heroes was an ugly, glitchy and totally revolting Sonic game. The character models in that game always pissed me off and continue to do so as they look worse than the models in Dreamcast version of SA1. The stage design was terrible and have the Chaotix levels consist of fetch quests was ridiculous.

The only thing I might have slightly enjoyed in that game were the return of special stages. And they weren't even that great.

Edit: And heroes introduced the concept of using the same enemy in every level of the game and enemy life bars. This shit shows up in Sonic Rush and Sonic 2006 (and apparently in the Werehog levels of Unleashed).

I am now upset.

Wow. I pretty much hated that game, but Grand metropolis and Rail Canyon were my favorite stages! Talk about difference of opinion!

And I'm sure they thought so and are entitled to it. I would say the same thing and more based on what I've seen of Sonic Unleashed. I really have no desire to argue with you as quite frankly it's a pointless discussion. To me the game looks great, to you it doesn't. Anyway, less than a month now. Within two weeks or so, I expect media outlets to start covering review code. We won't have to wait long.

So apparently Sonic is the big franchise, and it makes Sega money.

If that is so, is there some other compelling reason why they can't hire decent programmers at least? I mean, every fucking Sonic game is a glitchy nightmare. Sunshine was among Nintendo's worst, and even it had far fewer problems than Sonic's best thus far.

There's a difference between being cautious and actively hoping that the game will be bad, in spite of any evidence to the contrary. Sort of akin to calling the game "Shit"....

Which is what some people are doing, and it's... welll... I want to find a word to use that isn't 'pathetic' as that's too harsh.

It's annoying because they changed the core gameplay of the series for the worse for no good reason. Is Sonic Rush style gameplay fun? Yes. Is Sonic Rush style gameplay as fun as Sonic 3 & Knuckles? No. As I've said before, the key problems lie in level design and physics. They've been progressively moving Sonic towards being a game that is more like a rythm/racing game hybrid than a platformer.

Sonic IS about speed, and always has been about speed. What are you guys blabbering about(no offense intended). Back in the 16 bit days all the marketing was, "oh Sonic's so fast, look how fast he goes."

Look at the Gamerankings.com scores for the original Sonic Adventure games. They had far more side characters than Sonic Unleashed does and they still got great reviews. The fact is, if the game is enjoyable, it will be enjoyed. And right now it's looking good and getting positive previews.

Also, every single Sonic game from Sonic 2 onwards has introduced new characters. So to say "oh! no new characters!" is just finding a reason to complain. If you guys enjoyed most of the gameplay of the extra characters in the other 3d sonics, it likely wouldn't be a worry.

To me, Sonic Unleashed is looking like the best Sonic ever. And I say that as a 21 year old who grew up playing Sonic on Genesis.

And I'll tell you why, aside from the beautiful art design of the levels, this is the first game where Sonic looks like he really lives up to his billing, speed wise. I remember watching the old Sonic tv show, where Sonic would zoom off into the horizon. Then I would play the games and yeah, he was pretty fast, but aside from with the super sneakers he wasn't all that fast. Though the running on water in Sonic 3(which I never owned until now on Ps2 is pretty awesome)

Anyway, hopefully this will be polished and smoothed out by release. They've certainly improved the framerate, and Sega seems to know that this game is very important for the character's legacy.

So what you're saying is that you don't know anyone personally who's played it and are one of the people who still put any weight at all into previews.

We are complaining the game is too fast. Nothing about "exactly like this or that". It's just too damn fast and the hedgewolf levels look clunky. There's little in the way of platforming. The one who changed the topic to "omg great previews this game rocks you guys are wrong" was you.

Yeah I think this is a cool game. I like Sonic. I like Hedgehogs. The color blue is nice. The color blue has received some criticism as of late but maybe this will push blue back into the limelight with more popular colors like pink and orange. However, I specifically remember a preview for blue around this time before the launch of the last blue that said it would be good, and we all know how that turned out. Oh well, I miss the days of blue in the 90s.

PS- Just picked up Brown at ColorStop! Its sweet!

vendetta: an often prolonged series of retaliatory, vengeful, or hostile acts or exchange of such acts

Someone losing an argument so badly that they backtrack to the point where they seem like hypocrites in retrospect: hilarious

Its sweet!

:lol

So what you're saying is that you don't know anyone personally who's played it and are one of the people who still put any weight at all into previews.

We are complaining the game is too fast. Nothing about "exactly like this or that". It's just too damn fast and the hedgewolf levels look clunky. There's little in the way of platforming. The one who changed the topic to "omg great previews this game rocks you guys are wrong" was you.

I suppose its possible that everyone who posted their impressions in forums and boards for the game was a secret sega operative but I doubt it. In other words I've read plenty of impressions from gamers who've played the game and said it was fantastic. Even if they hadn't I would still be saying it looks amazing because it really does.

And yes, complaining that a Sonic game fundamentally shouldn't be fast, should use the Mario engine and whatnot is pretty weird.
