IGN: The Best 6 Assassin's Creed Games

I've only ever played AC2 and Brotherhood. Really enjoyed them so i'm not really sure if I missed out by not playing the others or not.

The title of your IGN Page says: The Best Assassin's Creed Games - IGN

The URL: www.ign.com/articles/2013/10/31/the-best-assassins-creed-games

So what the fuck is it then? Oh, you just like to "bait'n'switch" to get clicks, I see...

IGN has the ability for article titles to be different than the headlines that run through the IGN blogrolls. In this specific instance, the A/B headlines we ran for this story are:

Which Assassin's Creed Game is the Best?
Ranking the Core Assassin's Creed Games

I'm comfortable with the article headline because these ARE the best Assassin's Creed games, and if someone uses Google or other search engines to come in and land on that page, we are indeed delivering them a list of the best.

We had a big conversation about it in the office. Bloodlines on the PSP and Liberation on the Vita were the closest to being included. But it felt weird to have them in there, at the very bottom - it didn't seem fair. And if we start including some spin-offs, it felt strange to leave off others. Did you know there's a sprite-based 2D Assassin's Creed that appeared on old flip phones like the RAZR, for example?

But by all means keep swearing at me.

AC II and Liberation were both pretty good.
AC II had some of the most beautiful environments in the series. Some of the those cathedrals were just amazing to climb around in.

And I fucking loved the crazy surreal "truth" puzzles. Talk about a moody palette cleanser. Those were something else.

But at this point I'm impressed with any game that showcases artistry and doesn't think of their audience as braindead monkeys who can only press (A) when prompted, and only then if the world is exploding or erupting in arterial spray every ten seconds, lest we be bored back into our junk-food induced slumber.

I would put the original in the number 2 slot--it was fresh and incredibly beautiful(never seen anything like it at the time). Also, it made you feel like a real assassin.

I've never been tempted to rate Brohood higher than AC2. True that Bro brought a lot of cool new game play additions to the table, and I do like it a lot if only for that. But for me, the cities are the star of the show, and man did Rome ever suck. It was a dull, gray copy/pasta city with the occasional cool landmark strewn around. Surrounded by generic empty badlands with the occasional ruin. It was a let down after exploring Florence, Tuscany, Forli and fucking Venice in AC2. Ubi made it sound like "We're only giving you one city this time. But it's basically going to be kinda like a bigger and better Venice." Puh-leez.

AC1 ruled. Anyone who hates it can go suck an egg.

2, 1, Brotherhood, and I don't care to list the rest. Revelations had a nice conclusion to the Ezio and Altair stories but that's all it has going for it. Character models suddenly got really ugly too.

Revelations is way better than AC1. Sorry, but that's an insta-fail

No way. AC1 might have been boring as shit when doing missions, but the cities and world were awesome. Constantinople is the worst city in the entire series. It's not fun to explore and most of it is very cut and paste. It has very little 'personailty compared to all the other locations in the series.

Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood are like one game to me.

Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood are like one game to me.

I know what you mean. I came to AC 2 a year after it launched, so I played Brotherhood within a few months of finishing AC2. It had some big improvements and I really liked the multiplayer, but AC2 is still my favorite.

I played all the Ezio games in a 12 month period and didn't get tired of them.

1. ACB
2. AC2
3. AC1
4. AC3
5. ACR

Will play Black Flag when I get my PS4. It is impossible for me to hate AC1 because it got me through something way back. In fact, I would say that since my love for the series started back then, it's impossible for me to not like any AC game. So I guess keep in mind that even though these games are listed in a certain order, I do love them all.

ACI was the concept, ACII was the realisation. Everything since has been a destruction of the pinnacle that was reached with II with each iteration getting progressively worse. Possibly an argument for Brotherhood for most people, but still for me it lacked greatly compared to II

I was really dreading Watch Dogs being subbed with ACIV in my shopto bundle. Thankfully they've just refunded the difference. I've given them three chances since II by committing to an early purchase to reach their heights and they have failed to deliver every time.

ACIV will be a non-purchase or bargain bucket buy for me.

As a tech demo, yes, but would not put it on a list of games :p

I don't think it's a good thing that it had a such small repertoire of sub-missions that you did over and over, I agree that was a big flaw. But everything else about the game made up for that to me. Also, I wasn't hyped for it at all before it came out, I had no real expectations.

LOL. This Ubi's moneyhatting.

The top six games AC games are all of them!

The main series has 6 games. The rest of the games are Mobile/Portable games.

Guess I'd say

1st - AC 2 - For being such a fucking jump up over the first, really nice big cities
Joint 2nd - Brotherhood and Revelations for both being really good remixes on the core AC2 experience, adding new story, trying some new things, some that worked and some that didn't.
3rd - AC3 for...tree running I guess. I liked it more than a lot of others, but it's kind of hard to gush about.
4th - AC1. Loved it at the time, but as soon as AC2 came out, that was it. I would never go back to it, all the other sI would at least replay some of for various reasons.

Hopefully when 4 hits on PC it rises right up there to the top. On a personal level, I always find it interesting how some can lvoe Brotherhood so much and Revelations so little, but everyone is entitled to their opinion of course.

Top 6? lol, so all of them?

List is all sorts of wrong anyway

1. AC II
2. Brohood
3. Revelations
4. Original
.
.
.
5. AC III (distant last)

And of course 4 isn't out yet, so it has no place on this list yet.

Saving Black Flag for PS4/PC. Also, Brotherhood is objectively the best, I think. Assassin's Creed 2 being such a pleasant surprise probably keeps it higher in my favourites though.

I actually still had a good time with even Assassin's Creed 3. But to paraphrase what Sterling once said about Sonic Unleashed. "It's like someone baked a beautiful cake, but accidentally threw some nails in too". When Assassin's Creed 3 was good, I really liked it. But there's just as much to despise about it too.

Glad to hear Black Flag is a step in the right direction again, prioritising fun gameplay and a likeable protagonist. I was getting series fatigue, but now I'm looking forward to giving the new one a shot.

Get that "objective" non sense out of here, These are games, not science formulas. Also AC2 had much better pacing, progression, story, settings, etc. Just because AC Brotherhood improved on the mechanics by a tiny bit, doesn't make it the more enjoyable game.

Assassin's Creed is probably my favorite series out there right now. I love having something to look forward to each fall like my friends do with their Maddens and Call of Duties. That being said:

  1. AC 3
  2. AC: Rev
  3. AC: Bro
  4. AC 1
  5. AC 2

Waiting for the PS4 version of 4 is killing me ;(

Playing Black Flag now and in my opinion it's much better than AC3 (more and better stealth gameplay, better level and world design, better music, better main character) . The game is really good, but I can't rank it now because I haven't finished it yet. One of my dream games was always an open world pirate game, so Black Flag is doing it for me.

Hard to decide witch game is the best betwenn 2 and brotherhood so my list would be :

5)ACR
only there because of the ending
4)AC1
Good game full of ideas
3)ACL
Aveline rocks , also persona system + machette
2)ACB
Brotherhood , nuff said
1)AC2
DAT plot, system , antagonists , DAT FINAL BATTLE

The 6 best? Isn't that like, basically all of them?

It's an ordered list. They didn't choose 6 out of a larger pool.

This has to be a joke.
I think the larger point here is that they are saying Black Flag is second only to 2, which is a noteworthy comment.

The worst is by far AC3. The best is AC2.

Also LOL @ top 6. There are only 6 games to begin with.

Only the OP calls it "Top 6" - our article on IGN makes it clear that this is a ranking of the 6 mainline AC games.

Haven't played BF yet but...

1. AC 2
2. AC:B
3. AC 1
4. AC 3
5. AC: R

Best new IP this gen

Speaking as an unapologetically HUGE Assassin's Creed fanboy that has bought every limited edition and imported the really good editions from Europe just to have them:

1) AC2
2) AC3
3) AC1
4) ACB
5) ACR

Haven't played 4 yet.

I like ACB and ACR, don't get me wrong, but they were basically just iterative of AC2... which in of itself, was iterative of AC1.

AC1 and AC3 were the two most ambitions games in the franchise and they stumbled. They reached for the stars and missed, but I appreciate that a hell of a lot more than 'let's add some minor features to an existing formula and call it a day'.

ACB and ACR are very polished experiences, but very unexciting to me. Compared to AC1 and AC3, which felt fresh, and exciting and unpolished.

Everytime I think about this exact topic I was come back to "brotherhood was so fuckin fun..."

I loved the boats in 3 and the guns so I imagine I will really enjoy 4 (waiting for the ps4 release) but the first time you call in 6 master level assassins and just walk slowly through the death all around you completely unharmed is maybe one of my favorite moments from this whole series.

Bro: Would be followed closely by 1 and then 2 and then the rest... in no particular order.
